NMC Extended Education instructor, Adam VanHouten (featured on the cover), believes that anyone who desires to, can paint. Adam says most adults can be hesitant to begin painting because of the fear of making a mistake. “I love getting them to open up and express themselves.” NMC: How did you discover your passion for art? As a kid, I was constantly drawing in sketchbooks. My love for painting developed as an undergrad at WMU. NMC: If you could only share one tip with newbies, what would it be? Taking classes is a great way to begin to learn techniques and methods of painting...don’t believe me, take a class and find out more! “Painting centers my soul. I paint because it makes me feel more alive and keeps the rest of my life in balance.”

Today’s American Government and Politics

The First Amendment: Free Speech and Religion The First Amendment to the Constitution states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech…” But what does that mean, exactly? Where does the free speech of one person or group conflict with the sensibilities or protections of another? What about hate speech? Antiwar protests? When does the free exercise of religious beliefs effectively constitute the establishment of religion? We know that debates and controversy rage on issues that touch our deeply held religious and/or philosophical beliefs, such as abortion, war, sexual preferences, vaccinations, whether to preserve certain war memorials, etc. Together, we will discuss the scope of these First Amendment freedoms and cover some of the key U.S. Supreme court decisions on these issues. There will be some reading materials and be prepared for lively class discussions. 4 Thurs. Oct. 31-Nov. 21 1-3 p.m. University Center Rm. 219 Instructor: Eleanor Lynn, J.D. ($85 with LIFE Discount)

Today’s American government is very different from the one we learned about in a high school or college government class. The differences are deeper than the current partisan polarization and rancor. This class reviews the ideas and structures of the founders, then traces the major changes that have occurred in institutions and practices as America has transformed from a frontier nation to an urban-industrial rising power to a post-industrial mature state. 3 Tues., Nov. 5-19 1-3:30 p.m. University Center Rm. 213 Instructor: Dr. Phil Mikesell ($75 with LIFE Discount)

Education Today: 1850s or 2020s? Do you have kids or grandkids who are overwhelmed and stressed by the amount of testing and pressure placed on our young students today? Are we engaging ALL of our learners in developmentally appropriate ways? Are our schools building our children up and teaching them to be better humans? Perhaps you can imagine a better system, or maybe you think we’ve come a long way. The 1850s model was designed to acculturate the flood of immigrants coming from Europe into the United States – are we still stuck in that model? What is Governor Whitmer’s plan? What are other states and nations doing? What can WE realistically do to change things? This is a discussion class that welcomes your knowledge and opinions. 3 Tues., Nov. 5-19 5-7 p.m. University Center Rm. 209 Facilitator: Fred Curow ($58 with LIFE Discount)

INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT Margaret Bennett

Has been an NMC EES Instructor for 20+ years. See her Yoga and Meditation classes on pages 47 & 52.

“Yoga and Meditation are ways of gradually increasing awareness of life and how joyful it is.” –Margaret Bennett

$125

NMC: How did your Yoga and Meditation journey begin? I have always been drawn to metaphysical and spiritual exploration. I’m a fairly anxious person by nature. A friend invited me to learn meditation back in the 1970s. Yoga and Meditation brought me a deeply rooted sense of peace, focus, and connection to the innate wisdom which we all have and can learn to uncover with the right tools. I began teaching with NMC and Crooked Tree Yoga & Therapy (Acme) in 1997.

NMC: What inspired you to pursue your Master’s Degree? I was looking for a scholarly or academic viewpoint to balance my intuitive understanding of ancient universal truths. I completed my MA in Transformational Psychology in 2019, which gives me a broader perspective to share with my students. NMC: What do you love most about teaching Yoga & Meditation? (Margaret teaches 14 classes a week!) There is no limit to the process of awakening that can begin with a practice of Yoga and Meditation. It is an infinite path that continues to unfold levels of understanding and awareness about life as it really is. A person receives more from the practice than they expected. Students grow stronger, more balanced, more flexible, more comfortable and confident in their own skin – and that’s just the beginning! I love being present to the small discoveries students make in their practices that translate into huge transformations in their lives. It is like watching a lotus as it blossoms! Fall 2019

Those who need to verbally process often choose those who need to get away and think about it. In the end, it is often not the issue at hand that causes stress in a relationship, but the manner in which each partner communicates. Knowing how to communicate with this person who is put together differently than you is essential for a happy relationship. This FUN, small investment will take your relationship to the next level.
