COLLEGE FOR KIDS

On The Cover

Raised and educated in Puerto Rico, Marguerite completed her formal tenure at NMC in 2021 after an impressive 40year career.

It was language that made her first connection with NMC; but curiosity that continuously opened its doors to discover the rich and diverse world of topics that keeps our community actively learning, herself included. In her “retirement,” Marguerite hosts Coffee Chats, where she interviews community guests and NMC partners about the work they do to enrich our community with their own stories. Join Marguerite and a series of incredible gueses this Winter - now in-person over lunch (pg. 30).

LIFE ENRICHMENT Painting I

Knitting: Toe-up Socks

Students will be introduced to the techniques and materials of painting. Includes use of creative effects, additive and subtractive approaches, and mixing of color to create effective paintings in a step-by-step manner. This is an NMC academic class that is cross-listed for community enrollment.

As an alternative to the conventional cuff-down sock technique, learn the toe-up sock technique. Both techniques produce a sock that, when finished, will look identical. The difference is your personal preference for knitting either cuff down or toe-up. All sock classes are taught using the circular, in-the-round knitting technique. If you already know how to knit in the round you will be ready to begin knitting your sock. If you are unfamiliar with circular knitting you will learn this technique during the first class. Begin with a slightly different version of Judy’s Magic Cast-On (method devised by popular knitting icon Judy Beeker) for the toe followed by your choice of two heel patterns, either a shadow wrap heel or the fleegle heel, and finishing with an extra stretchy bind off at the end. Supply list will be emailed to you two weeks before the start of the class.

Ukraine: Its Role in the Soviet Union

Jack Segal #2915 March 1 F 10 am – 12 pm

Ukraine: The Road to War Ukraine: Imperial Russia’s Expansion NEW! Empress Catherine the Great, during the 1760s, significantly expanded her empire to the south, marking a pivotal moment in Russian history. This expansion was marked by the annexation of territories in the Black Sea region, notably Crimea. Moving forward to the mid-19th century, the Crimean War, which occurred from 1853 to 1856, was a complex conflict primarily triggered by disputes over the holy places in Jerusalem, but it also became a broader struggle for influence and control in the Black Sea region. Various European powers, including Russia, the Ottoman Empire, France, and Britain, were involved in this conflict. Lastly, the Crimean Tatars, an indigenous Turkic ethnic group in Crimea, have a long history of being expelled and persecuted. Their repeated expulsions can be attributed to historical events, including their resistance against Russian rule, which led to punitive measures and forced migrations, significantly impacting their population and presence in the region.

The 2013 Maidan Revolution in Ukraine, driven by President Yanukovych’s rejection of a European Union association agreement, triggered mass protests against corruption and authoritarianism. Following the 2014 Russian invasion of the Donbass and the annexation of Crimea, the West imposed sanctions on Russia and supported Ukraine. Between the 2014 occupation and the 2022 invasion, Eastern Ukraine saw an unstable conflict with sporadic fighting and diplomatic efforts. The question remains, what led Putin to invade Ukraine in February 2022. Today, the West faces the challenge of upholding international norms, safeguarding Ukraine’s sovereignty, and maintaining regional stability in the largest land war in Europe since World War II. Ukraine’s historical trajectory within the Soviet Union is marked by key events and policies. Lenin considered Ukraine integral to his socialist vision, advocating for its autonomy. Stalin’s 1930s policies, including forced collectivization, caused the man-made Holodomor famine, targeting Ukrainian resistance. The motivation of Khrushchev’s 1954 transfer of Crimea to Ukraine remains debated. During the Cold War, Ukraine played a vital role in the USSR’s military-industrial complex. In 1994, Ukraine relinquished its nuclear arsenal for security assurances. However, the 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea and ongoing conflict have cast doubt on the Budapest Memorandum’s effectiveness.

The First Amendment: Free Speech & Freedom of Religion Clauses The First Amendment is the hottest area of law right now. Many of the most controversial decisions being handed down by the Supreme Court are being brought under some provision of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech.....” But what do those words mean, exactly? Where does the free speech of one person or group conflict with the sensibilities or protections of another? What about “hate speech” or political speech that might incite violence? When does the “free exercise” of one’s religious beliefs effectively constitute the “establishment” of a religion? Debates and controversy rage on issues that touch our deeply held religious and/or philosophical beliefs, such as abortion, war, sexual orientation, vaccinations, whether to preserve certain memorials, etc. This class will discuss the scope of these First Amendment “freedoms” and some of the key U.S. Supreme Court decisions on these issues. We will not try to solve these controversies but you will leave with a much better understanding of the backdrop and rationale for the cases interpreting this part of the Constitution. Writing Refining Your Words: The Craft of Editing & Revision NEW! Revision is “re-seeing” a piece of writing from a fresh, critical perspective. This part of the writing process is where good writing becomes great. Revision involves making major changes to a document’s content, structure, and organization. It is making sure that everything fits the purpose of the document. It is looking at the organization of paragraphs and their relation to one another. It might also be necessary to move sentences or paragraphs from one part of the text to another. As a last step in the revision process, the writer decides if there are parts of his or her work that can be eliminated, ranging from words, sentences, paragraphs, to entire pages.

Creative Writing Learn the basic techniques of effective and imaginative writing of fiction and short stories across multiple genres of creative writing. Study and practice the use of concrete language, conflict, characterization, point of view, narrative, lyricism, pace, and setting in your writing. Develop reading and feedback skills through a workshop format. Specific skills explored and honed through classroom activities include close reading, close observation, revision, discipline and practice, giving and receiving feedback, and developing access to imaginative powers. This is an NMC academic class that is cross-listed for community enrollment. Required text is The Practice of Creative Writing, 4th edition, by Heather Sellers, available at the NMC Bookstore (995-1285). Text is supplemented with additional examples of contemporary creative writing, and also includes analysis of model works and critique of manuscripts produced by class members. Alissia Lingaur

Bring your favorite poem, and we’ll also look at a variety of genres: narrative, dramatic, lyric, prose-poetry, haiku, concrete, and contemporary. The unusual, meaningful power of a poem is a co-creation between author and reader. Together let’s enjoy exploring this unusual, condensed literary form. Sheila Bartle

LIFE ENRICHMENT CLASS SERIES:

Coffee Chats at Lunch Greetings! While we prepare for winter to surprise us, I hope you’ll plan to join me, Marguerite Cotto, for a Coffee Chats season d e s i g n e d to d o t h e same. We’re going to experiment with a different format: brown-bag lunch; a different time: 12:00-1:00 pm; and a different setting - all together in real-time at the Timothy J. Nelson Innovation Center on NMC’s main campus. In the spirit of all this, I’ve built our five-part season through the lens of the Italian novelist Italo Calvino, particularly following the prompts of his final work, a collection of essays on the future of literature, “Six Memos for the Next Millennium.” Calvino completed five of the six reflections before his death in 1985. These are passionate and complex writings, which is probably why I keep coming back to them as a blueprint for more than the future of literature, as I think the conversations ahead will suggest!

Coffee Chats: Quickness with Rich Brauer

Coffee Chats: Visibility with Jamie John

From Calvino’s perspective, quickness is the pacing of a story; an ‘enchantment that affects the flow of time, contracting it or expanding it.’ Filmmaker Rich Brauer will join us to talk about movie-making, mastering the flow of time, and how it determines which story a movie director wants to tell.

That which enters our imagination about ourselves and the world is the essence of Calvino’s exploration of visibility. What illuminates how we see ourselves? How do we choose to be seen? For the conversation around these questions, we’ll be joined by Jamie John, a two-spirit trans and queer Anishinaabe and Korean-American multi-disciplinary artist whose work around the design and significance of ‘zines’ has introduced many to both the history and validity of this distinctive medium to convey individual explorations within a community as well as a prompt for communities themselves to connect and grow.

Coffee Chats: Lightness with Glenn Wolf Calvino addresses lightness, which he describes as the removal of weight and shadow from bodies and structures. Glenn Wolff, whose wonderful illustrations are among the most immediately recognizable of any artist in our region, will join us to talk about the work of the visual artist as illuminator of ideas and things, and the nature of collaboration between writer and painter that can create completely new understandings of the world we think we know. Coffee Chats: Exactitude with Leanne Baumeler Of course, Calvino has an interesting idea about exactitude in a story: the framework is well-considered; the images are sharp and memorable; and the language is as precise as possible. Leanne Baumeler, who is an ASL interpreter and NMC’s Coordinator of Disabilities Services, will join us as we explore the in-exactitude of the translator’s world from various perspectives – formal languages (ALS and Spanish) through the experiences of individuals overcoming other limitations that influence language expression. Coffee Chats: Multiplicity with Samantha Gutoski With this final published reflection, Calvino wrestles with the continuum each one of us experiences: the flow from exactitude to chaos, from analytics to humanity, and back towards balance, in other words, the multiplicity of our human existence. Our guest Samantha Gutoski coaches mindfulness through story-telling and listening, tools for examining and enhancing holistic well-being. As we conclude this exploration of Calvino’s memos, we’ll also touch upon the uncompleted final essay – complexity, and engage with you in ideas about the future of story, and storytellers! Learn & Play Contemporary Tabletop Games

Learn & Play Dungeons & Dragons

We are living during a renaissance of tabletop games: thousands are published each year. If you have enjoyed a game of Monopoly, Risk, or Yahtzee (and even if you haven’t!), then you owe it to yourself to try some newer board games that add depth, unique strategies, thematic elements, and interesting interactions. At each session, we’ll briefly talk about an aspect of how tabletop games work and have evolved, then learn and play a recent title. At the first session, we will decide what sort of games we’ll explore and play some introductory games. For future sessions, possible games to learn and play include Flash Point: Fire Rescue, a cooperative game where each player is a firefighter trying to rescue victims from a burning house; Parks, a game of visiting national parks by collecting experiences; Concordia, an economic game set in the ancient Roman Mediterranean; and Wingspan, a card game of building strong bird habitats. Each session will last three hours and is intended for adults or teens.

Have you wanted to learn how to play Dungeons & Dragons? Now is your chance. Don your adventuring gear and polish up your Great Axe. Instructor Nick Roster has been playing D & D since the 70s and 80s, and has an active campaign going with his family and friends. This introduction to the popular role-playing game will prepare you with a lifetime of fun, no matter the weather. Learn how to generate characters and then play a short-ish campaign where we will learn rules as we go. Some materials will be provided for you to take home and begin your own campaign. A sense of adventure is your only prerequisite.
