ENRICHMENT TOM BRAZIUNAS Tom majored in geophysical sciences at the University of Chicago before earning a Master’s Degree in the realm of paleontology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He holds a doctorate in geology from the University of Washington. Tom conducted research on the carbon cycle and climate at the UW while teaching courses in geology (including dinosaurs), oceanography and geography at South Seattle and North Seattle Colleges. He is currently the Associate Dean of e-Learning at North Seattle College and also teaches hybrid and online college courses on dinosaurs. However, his most important qualification for teaching dinosaurs is not his educational background, but the fact that he still has his toy dinosaur collection from way back some 50 plus years! Tom loves to travel, especially to places with cool rock and fossil features. Amongst the exciting places he has visited are the feathered dinosaur locales in China, Egg Mountain in Montana, Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta and the Allosaurus-rich Cleveland-Lloyd Quarry in Utah. Tom loves to learn from others, which is why he teaches!

Schlock Cinema: Amazingly Inept Rip-Offs!

ENRICHMENT

Rip-offs are endemic to our culture. If someone turns out a new kind flashlight, cellphone, or an innovative movie, there will be 15 rip-offs, knock-offs or off-brand copies flooding the market within minutes. This quarter Schlock Cinema takes a close look at filmdom’s low-priced and seldom celebrated imitators. They won’t hold a candle to the originals, but copycat films are frequently interesting, experimental and make cogent comments on American life and mores that big-budget Hollywood movies are oftentime afraid to utter. This quarter we will be showing: Yonggary (A Korean copy of Godzilla); The Land That Time Forgot (copying Journey To The Center of the Earth); Konga (aping King Kong); and Mother Riley Meets The Vampire AKA Vampire Over London; AKA My Son, The Vampire; AKA Old Mother Riley Meets The Vampire (copying Dracula and The Phantom Creeps, both of which starred Bela Lugosi, who also stars in Mother Riley). 7131 7/9/2015 - 7/30/2015 7:00 - 9:00PM 4 ses Th Hopkins On Campus: LB Bldg Room 1131 $65

JOYCE MAJOR A burning desire for growth, an inward calling for social change, a need to find her purpose and a curiosity about the world led Joyce to create her own dream; a yearlong trip around the world, but with a twist—she decided not to be a tourist but rather a volunteer. Spending a month in each country, on all but one continent, she volunteered for projects with which she had no experience, booking travel plans and enlisting in projects by herself that included riding on the Trans-Siberian Express from Beijing to Moscow to Brussels. Joyce now teaches others how to find volunteer projects around the world while making their travel dreams a reality!

Travel Travel the World Volunteering Ready to help in another country by working with local communities that need your skills or support with existing projects? Want to teach English, work with children, help wildlife, support conservation or share your expertise?
