The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) offers an impressive selection of educational and social opportunities for adults age 50 and older. With a purpose to promote lifelong learning and continued intellectual and personal growth for retirement-age individuals, OLLI has become the place for fun, interactive learning in a safe and encouraging environment. Our curriculum draws from the interests, talents and experiences of older adult learners. Academic courses are college level (without the homework, term papers and tests), and cover everything

from personal computers to fitness for life and visual arts. Social activities include various gatherings for dinner, laughter and entertainment. Every student that enrolls in our courses or programs becomes one of our OLLI members and will begin to receive our quarterly Newsletter. Our members become part of our unique OLLI family where learning is a continuous part of our culture. DIRECTOR’S NOTES Dick Harp, Director As I get older, I tend to tell stories to help convey a message about my life experiences. However, I am not certain if I can tell this story well enough to accurately describe how I felt when I learned that one of my dear friends, Tom Alexander, had passed away unexpectedly. Several people at KSU asked me to write this article about Tom as they knew we had been friends for a long time. It is difficult to adequately describe such an outstanding individual in a brief article, but I will try my best to provide insight into one of the finest people I have ever known. I first met Tom many years ago when he asked me to join the Board of Directors for the Cobb County Boy’s Clubs. A few years later, I found myself taking his place as president of the clubs. He was a great motivator and dedicated to helping people better themselves. If there was a fundraising drive for just about any charity or good cause, Tom was always involved to help make it successful. Even though he was a very busy BellSouth executive, he somehow found the time to help whenever asked. I had the pleasure of working with Tom on many projects and always learned a great deal. When Tom asked for help on a project, you could not say no to him. He greeted everyone with a warm smile and made you feel you were the most important member of his committee. Tom was the reason I became involved with KSU. I retired in 1997 and was living a somewhat lazy, unproductive life. We often played golf together. On one of our golf outings, Tom asked me if I still remembered how to tie a necktie. I assured him I could still perform that act. He then asked me to meet him for lunch the following week. I thought to myself that this would be another expensive

luncheon as he would be asking for a donation for one of the causes he was working on. When I met Tom at The Georgian Club, it turned out to be a complete surprise. Instead of asking for a donation, he had invited me to lunch to meet Barbara Calhoun, who was the new dean of KSU’s Continuing Education Department. Tom had learned that Dean Calhoun was seeking individuals who would be willing to serve on an advisory board that could provide assistance and suggestions to help make her department, which is now the College of Continuing and Professional Education, one of the best in the country. We created an advisory board which was jokingly referred to as “the movers and shakers” in Cobb County. We were all proud to be part of KSU and to help Dean Calhoun. I would never have had this pleasure if it weren’t for Tom. I, and many others, will greatly miss Tom. However, he has left his signature on many successful organizations, not only in Cobb County but in his retirement area of Big Canoe, Ga. There, he devoted his efforts to help the Volunteer Fire Department and has made a tremendous contribution to that community. We are all better off because of Tom Alexander.

Travel Literature

In the 20th century, travel

literature gained a revised status due to travel writers adding some literary techniques to their works. Inspired by this resurgence, our new course introduces different types of travel literature and the travelers’ ways of interpreting people and cultures. Through the use of diaries, journals and various other documents, instructor Charles Leahy will have students read texts that help to discuss the nature and meaning of what travel is. Leahy recently retired from the corporate company Alorica after nearly 40 years as vice president of global education and curriculum development. However, his academic background is in English literature. He sought inspiration from his passion of learning and teaching to go for a second career. He is a highly-regarded teacher with over 20 years of educational work. “I was looking for an

encore career and I saw my love of literature and my passion for travel potentially wedded,” he said. His work in countries all over the world led to his interest in adventure travel. Charles has gone gorilla trekking in the East African highlands and white water rafting on the Nile. He went to Papua New Guinea to experience the primitive tribes and found Komodo Dragons in Indonesia. One of the most important lessons Charles learned throughout his travels was the importance of reflection: the ability to reflect on oneself along with understanding and appreciating others. One of his fondest memories took place when he lived in Scotland as a young man. He made a wager with his friend that he could walk up to anyone in any pub in Edinburgh and they would be able to cite a poem or a

Sketching Your World Intermediate

This course is designed for students who have some drawing and watercolor experience or have been in the Beginning Sketching Your World class. The Guerrilla War in Georgia 1861-1865

The Age of Clipper Ships

From the Appalachians to the Wiregrass, it’s the little known conflict that nearly brought Georgia to the brink of anarchy. Take a rare look into the irregular war that began with local opposition to secession in 1861 and the passage of conscription in 1862 which led to open rebellion by 1863. This course will include an overview of the operations of state troopers and home guard militia to counter draft evasion, desertion and “Tory” activity in the state. The various guerrilla bands that existed during this period are covered in detail. The course includes a look into local history and resources.

The age of Clipper ships came, flourished, and vanished in the midnineteenth century, the result of a unique combination of people, events and circumstances. With their sleek lines and billowing sails, these ships raced around the world in their quest to deliver cargoes in record time. This course details the birth, the glory years, and the decline of the Clipper. We examine the design in detail, the contributions of Matthew Fontaine Maury in mapping the oceans, the men and women of the Clipper trade, and some of the Clippers that made notable voyages. The British with the famous tea race between Ariel and Taiping will be included.

This course will study the book, What’s In A Name? A book written by Dale Hartsfield, the instructor. Mr. Hartsfield was the family spokesperson for the Hartsfield family when the City of Atlanta renamed the airport, HartsfieldJackson International Airport. The controversy surrounding the name change prompted the writing of this book. The class will cover the history of the great airport and the five official names since, the airport was built in 1925. The course will also discuss “fighting City Hall.” If you enjoy local history, politics, race relations and more this will be an interesting course for you. The US Constitution is the oldest still in use original document in the world. It works because it is designed to keep its nation and its diverse population alive and vibrant through the natural tension created by forced interplays of levels of government. 2017 is a banner year for learning the nuances of how to influence others to your understanding of the US Constitution. In the book, “The Vital Question, Energy, Evolution, and the Origins of Complex Life.” Nick Lane explores the processes that lead from primordial bacteria to the complex cells that make up all life. This course is designed to help players improve bidding, declarer play and defensive techniques. Concepts include planning the contract, developing extra tricks, basic card combinations, when to pull trump (or not), how to read your opponents cards, when and how to compete in the bidding and more. Each class will consist of students bidding and playing 8-12 pre-dealt hands, followed by bidding and card play analysis with the instructor, with dulpicate-type scoring (matchpoints).
