WELCOME TO THE COLLEGE OF PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION Notice anything different? Those of you with a sharp eye probably picked up on something. We changed our name earlier this spring to the College of Professional Education. The revision is small but meaningful. To be certain, we remain committed to our communitybased initiatives, including our excellent summer camps, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute programs, and life-enrichment activities. Now, we’re doing even more to help professionals succeed in their chosen fields. Here’s how we’re growing. We’ve developed several new certificates based on current research of in-demand jobs. Many of these are stacking credentials that let you build on your knowledge. An example is our new suite of CompTIA courses (page 27). If you want to work in IT but don’t know where to begin, CompTIA IT Fundamentals+ gets you started. From there, you can branch out into A+, Network+, Security+,

and beyond. Like our AutoCAD cover grad, Kason Barron, can tell you, these are courses that teach you skills to use on the job. We’ve also partnered with several colleges on campus (page 38) to help bring their programs to a wider audience. Now, if you want to learn data science, architecture, or business innovation from top professors, you can register right here with CPE. Here’s what hasn’t changed. We’re still about helping you reach the next level in your career. Whether you need an industry certification, a digital badge in leadership, or skills training for your company, the College of Professional Education is your resource to make it happen. So while you might see a new name on your graduation certificate, our commitment to your success is the same. As always, we welcome feedback. Send us a note at our new inbox, KSUprofessional@kennesaw.edu.

Inspired Innovation AutoCAD graduate applies software knowledge on the job with big results. For Kason Barron, seeing complex patterns and designs come to life on a canvas has always been a rewarding process. As a high school student, that canvas was a drawing notebook. Today, it’s AutoCAD, a sophisticated computer-aided drafting software application. As a cost estimator for Thyssenkrupp Materials, Barron works with industries ranging from aerospace and automotive to oil and gas, airlines, and more. When the wholesale metal supplier began to focus more on how they could play a role in producing the end products their customers needed, AutoCAD helped make it happen, and Barron, with his AutoCAD knowledge, was poised to play a key role in that transition. “What AutoCAD does is depict coordinates to create a shape, model, or design,” Barron says. “Once that product goes into production, it tells how to cut that part. We then process the product to a near net shape, or outline, of the final shape of the item.” Barron’s job involves determining the cost of each near net shape. “The right cost estimates, understanding the weight of the materials, and how long it will take to produce them — all of that starts with AutoCAD,” he says. Though Barron was already familiar with AutoCAD, he wanted to understand the latest version thoroughly. When he came across the AutoCAD Advanced Certificate, it fit his needs and he was particularly impressed with the expertise of the instructor, Paul Black. “I wasn’t looking to take a course that would go by the book and test me on the material,” he says. “I was looking for an instructor

who has a career in AutoCAD and is seasoned in using the program. The instructor was very skilled with management features and was able to guide us in using them. The book gives the technical aspects of the software, but Paul’s experience made the difference.” The Advanced level course is one of four certificates offered through the College of Professional Education, from Essentials all the way to AutoCAD 3D, the newest class just launched this spring. Barron calls the 3D functionality “noteworthy” in his line of work. “AutoCAD 3D allows you versatility,” he explains. “When a design is headed into production, three dimensional representations can exploit each and every critical dimension of a part for the programmer to note and review within the final quality inspection of the product.” Since completing AutoCAD Advanced, Barron is seeing results. Those results take the shape of everything from aircraft parts and armored vehicles to door hinges for the Tesla Model X and, one time, a cannon replica for a small business that does Civil War reenactments. “My employer is most definitely pleased with my level of knowledge,” he said. “In a corporate environment, there’s only one thing that matters in training — results applied within the company. Everything I create in AutoCAD goes into production. I get excited every day I go to work. Creating a digital near-net production layout for a customer’s part, only to see it later in use on something as complex as a Boeing SB-1 Defiant is truly spectacular.”

INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT

Dzan Ta REVIT ARCHITECTURE ESSENTIALS

Dzan Ta, instructor of our new Revit Architecture Essentials Certificate, is a man of many talents, but where he really shines is architecture, engineering and construction — the AEC industry. Since earning his bachelor’s degree in Architectural Design from Florida International University, he’s crafted digital models of buildings from the ground up, mastering the ins and outs of Revit software along the way. In that time, he earned so many credentials that we had to make a list. He is: • An Autodesk Expert Elite (1 of only 400 in the world) • An Autodesk Knowledge Network Contribution Award winner • An Autodesk Technician Specialist • An Autodesk Certified Instructor • Certified in Bluebeam, AutoCAD, Revit, AutoCAD Architecture, and more But, as a CPE instructor, we love that he goes above and beyond in everything he does. His students certainly appreciate his engaging teaching methods. “They would say I am fun to learn from, no matter the subject,” Dzan said. “I enjoy the engagement of student to teacher and teacher to student. It gives me a chance to learn as well as teach.” Even during his free time, Dzan is a leader. He’s a second-degree blackbelt Choi Kwang Do instructor and Assistant Scout Master with the Boy Scouts of America. With Dzan’s enthusiasm and his expertise in Revit software, our Revit Architecture Essentials course is sure to be exciting and filled with fundamental knowledge that will enable students to excel. “I enjoy teaching an application that is well thought out, easy to understand, and comfortable to teach,” says Dzan of his passion for Revit. Under his instruction, prospective students will be prepared to create 3D models, use sketching tools, and learn the ins and outs of CAD and Revit files for projects. Meanwhile, Dzan continues to be inspired by those around him and stays motivated in his field daily. “My favorite part is knowing that I am making a difference in other people’s lives,” said Dzan, who trains students to design and model everything from bamboo walls to commercial buildings. “As an instructor, knowing that the students learn valuable content to further their knowledge and career is rewarding.”
