Newbury Spring Festival announces its programme for 2017 On the 28th February tickets went on sale for the Newbury Spring Festival 2017.

6 - 20th May 2017

Returning for its 39th year the Festival features two weeks of world-class concerts with artists from classical music, folk, jazz and cabaret. The Festival has built the reputation of being one of the most popular and successful in the South of England bringing together some of the world's finest performers, ensembles and unique collaborations to entertain during this two week period. St Nicolas Church in the centre of Newbury is the Festival’s concert hall and hosts the orchestral concerts. The opening night, of which, is a performance of Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius performed by the Bournemouth

Symphony Orchestra with conductor David Parry. There will also be a rich programme of events in other venues within the area including Harry Christophers and The Sixteen at Douai Abbey and superstar trumpeter Alison Balsom at St Lawrence’s Church in Hungerford.

A daily programme of diverse events will be held at Newbury’s Corn Exchange featuring artists from classical through to Bollywood. Long established groups such as Dutch Swing College Band and the Morriston Orpheus Choir are returning to the Festival, all of whom will appear alongside folk groups such as singer Kathryn Tickell and the Ghanaian Kakatsitsi drummers. There are also two morning shows specifically for children and families.

update. . . Part of our work is to check with the community that our plans are still the right thing to do. Our Senior Citizen’s Action Group did that recently by hosting an event with local MP Richard Benyon. Anyone with an interest in issues facing older people could come, and I’m glad to say we had a full house which shows just how seriously Thatcham takes it. Richard talked about issues such as isolation and social services, before being expertly interviewed on camera by Kennet Sixth Former Brandon Hale and then by the audience. I’d like to thank Richard, Brandon and everyone else involved for a very successful event. Looking to the future, we have big plans for Thatcham Vision which I can now start sharing with you. We are in the process of applying for Charity status, which will give us access to many more sources of funding for our work. We also plan to offer services to smaller community groups which need support and resources to keep going (eg webpage, insurance, advice, etc). Thatcham has so many volunteer organisations which make a huge difference to people and we want to see them thriving. Refurbished tennis courts at Victoria Park The Victoria Park tennis courts opened in March, after a refurbishment cost in excess of £100,000 which was funded from the legal settlement secured by the Council last year, together with a £39,893 grant from the Lawn Tennis Association.

Official Launch Sat 8 April There is now a new online booking system called ‘Clubspark’ to allow people to register and book online. The annual cost for membership is just £36 which will allow a whole family to play unlimited times within a year. You can also book online on a ‘pay and play’ basis, costing £6 per game. Once you have booked online, you are given an access code to enter the courts, guaranteeing that your court is booked and ready for you when you arrive. Further details on the booking process are on our website www.newbury.gov.uk/tennis. Cllr Dave Goff, Leader of the Council said, “We have waited a long time for this and we are very excited to at last announce that the tennis courts are ready to play on. We will have an official launch on Saturday 8 April 2017 with our new tennis coach and representatives from the Lawn Tennis Association. The icing on the cake will be the laying down of a full coloured playing surface which (subject to the weather) will be completed before the grand opening”. 5

This year Newbury Carnival organisers asked for help from the local community to choose the hotly awaited Carnival 2017 theme. 32 entries were received, and the winning theme was chosen by the Carnival Committee as ‘Myths and Legends’. This theme was suggested by Falon Whiteley via the Carnival Facebook page.

To facilitate this, the Council has launched a new section on its website (www. newbury.gov.uk) inviting people to ask any questions they may have about the Council or the services it provides. Councillor Dave Goff said, “I would like to invite you to ask me any questions you may have about the Council or the services we provide and I will reply as soon as possible. However, for some queries where I need to investigate further I will acknowledge your contact and give a final response later. Questions will normally be published on the website within 2 working days of receipt and my answer will normally be published within a further five working days. Please indicate your preferred method of response. I am happy to respond by email, letter or phone. Please provide a telephone number, email or postal address as applicable.” This is an online facility and if it is decided that a question is inappropriate the Council will reply by email, normally within two days of receipt, explaining the reasons why. It is for this reason that any question must be accompanied by a valid email address. The name of the person submitting the question will not, however, be published on the website.

Ruth Walker, Project Manager for Newbury Carnival 2017 said, “We had lots of fun deciding on the parade theme from the brilliant ideas given to us. We hope that everyone will feel inspired to enter with all sorts of great ideas around the theme of ‘Myths and Legends’, which in addition to the traditional meaning, may include someone or something that can be described as a legend too.” Newbury Carnival is on Sunday July 16th with the Carnival Fete from 12 until 6pm in Victoria Park. Booking for the Carnival Fete is now open for trade stall holders and we advise early contact to secure a place. Community groups may book a stall free of charge before the end of May. After this date space cannot be guaranteed. The Carnival Parade will start at 2pm from Pound Street and wind through Bartholomew Street, and Northbrook Street to the Clock Tower and Victoria

Park. Recent entries for the Carnival Parade include the Harley Davidson’s Drive Through, Sue Ryder Charles Clore Unit, Razzamataz Theatre School, Interakt Dance School and Community, Kidstrument Musical Instrument Tuition, Thames Valley Kings Wheelchair Basketball Club, Abacus Day Nursery and Eddie Catz. This brings the total parade entries so far to 15 with many enquiries received. Ufton Court - children's charity Ufton Court is a thriving and innovative children’s charity based in a woodland setting near Reading.

Ufton Court has two areas of work, we provide dynamic primary school history education and we have an outdoor education charity called Ufton Adventure. Ufton Adventure has the twin objectives of raising the aspiration and attainment of children, who are underachieving at school. We work in close collaboration with schools, with children coming to us repeatedly

throughout their school career. Children return to school as more successful learners and re-engaged with school. Ufton Adventure is supported by Ufton Weddings which are based at our beautiful Tudor manor house and Tithe barn, all the profits being gift aided to our charity. Could this be the year you buy your first home? Given that buying a home is the single biggest purchase most people will ever make, it’s important to get it right. If you are a first time buyer, here are ten key steps you will need to take in order to buy your first home: 1. 2.

Get in touch with a mortgage provider. Agree a mortgage in principle; this will tell you the price of the property you can afford to buy. Go house-shopping. Look at as many properties as you can to get a good idea of what is out there and don’t forget to explore local facilities. Will the area suit you? Make an offer. When you have found the property for you, you can make an offer, keeping in mind the amount you can borrow. Meet with your mortgage provider. Speak to your mortgage provider and finalise your application for your mortgage. Decide what you need to know about the property. The property will be valued, producing a basic report. If you want to know more about the property, you can organise for a home buyers or full building survey to be undertaken. Instruct a Solicitor. Now you will need to instruct a legal representative to undertake the conveyancing process for you. Receiving an offer. If your mortgage provider is satisfied with all the information in your application, they will make you a mortgage offer. Paying the deposit. You will need to pay the deposit to your solicitors, who will arrange the purchase.

Contract exchange. The contracts will now be exchanged and a completion date agreed. 10. Completion day. Your purchase is now complete and you can collect the keys to your first home. Congratulations! Remember, within your initial purchase, various fees may be payable, including; stamp duty, solicitors fee, valuation fees, application and booking fees. You’ll buy a share of the property at first, paying rent to a housing association or landlord for the rest. You will only need to pay a deposit on the part you are initially buying. You will be paying your mortgage as well as rent to the housing association or landlord. Buying this way could mean a lower initial deposit with an option to buy more shares further down the line. This is where Shakespeare, who was one of eight children, spent much of his early life and where he married Anne Hathaway who bore him three children. He is also thought to have retired to Stratford in 1613. The bells of Holy Trinity Church where Shakespeare attended as a child will be rung and the Mayor will lead a procession which includes bands, other civic leaders, school children and actors. St George’s Day celebrated on 23rd April

Did you know that St George never actually set foot in Britain? It’s believed he was born in Lydda in Palestine, or in Cappadocia (now in central Turkey), and brought up in Palestine. His father was a Roman soldier, and when his parents died, George decided he would travel to Nicomedia (Turkey) to join the Roman army. He served for several years, progressing up the ranks to become an imperial guard of the Emperor. George was a devout Christian, and was tortured and executed for refusing to give up his Christian faith. It is believed that he was killed on 23rd April 300AD, which is why St George’s Day is celebrated on April 23rd each year. So where does the dragon come into it? The legend of George and the dragon dates back hundreds of years, to the 11th century, if not earlier. According to the legend, a dragon was terrorising a small village. The villagers would sacrifice their children to appease the dragon. One day George was riding past the village and met a young princess, whose turn it was to be sacrificed. George rescued the girl and offered to slay the dragon for the villagers, if they would convert to Christianity. They agreed, so he killed the dragon. Today the Feast of St George is celebrated in countries across the world, including Palestine, Syria, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

Over the years the Newbury Spring Festival has built up a young following as a result of its series of concerts specifically for families and children and this year is no different.

How do we celebrate? May Day originates from the Pagan festival of Beltane. The earliest celebrations are thought to have occurred during the Roman era when youths would celebrate the coming of spring with a day of dancing dedicated to the goddess Flora. During medieval times May Day became dedicated to Robin Hood and saw songs and plays performed up and down the country to celebrate the coming of spring. Historians believe the first maypole dance originated as part of Germanic pagan fertility rituals. Originally, the dancers danced around a living tree. It is the time of year when warmer weather begins and flowers and trees start to blossom. It is said to be a time of love and romance. In Scotland, the Early May Bank holiday has been observed on the first Monday in May since 1871, but was only introduced in the rest of the United Kingdom in 1978. In 1995 and only in that year, this bank holiday was moved to the second Monday in May (May 8) to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the allies accepting the surrender of the armed forces of Nazi Germany. This was the formal end of World War II and is known as VE Day. How was May Day celebrated in the past? May Day began early in the morning. People would go out before sunrise in

It is true that the premise of this book may put some people off: eight-year-old Ben is found dead in a park and eleven-year-old Sebastian is arrested and charged with his murder. It does ask us to question how our behaviour as adults can lead to horrific consequences. However, it is a very well-written and gripping novel. The focus of the story is Daniel, a solicitor chosen to represent Sebastian in court. Food is just like fashion and interior design, trends come and go, but what is 'hot' and not in the burn your mouth kind of way this Spring. . .

The taco is a traditional Mexican dish composed of a corn or wheat tortilla folded or rolled around a filling. Fill them with a variety of food, including beef, pork, chicken, seafood, vegetables, and cheese, allowing for great versatility and variety. Recipe 1 pound lean (at least 80%) ground beef 1 Cup of thick and chunky salsa 10 Taco shells 1/2 Lettuce, shredded 1 medium chopped tomato 1 cup grated Cheddar cheese Cook beef in 10-inch skillet over medium heat 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until brown then drain. Stir salsa into beef. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly; reduce heat to medium-low. Cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Pour beef mixture into large serving bowl. Gently heat taco shells and fill with beef mixture, lettuce, tomato and cheese.

Repetitive strain injuries (RSIs) are overuse injuries, due to repetitive actions which lead to fatigue, inflammation and pain in either the muscles or tendons.

The most common symptoms of RSI include tingling, aching, pain or soreness and cramp and usually appear during activity and worsen throughout the day. To reduce the pain, it is important to try and change the aggravating activity or how you perform it and resting as much as you can, which I understand isn’t always easy! It is best to seek treatment sooner rather than later, to prevent the injury from developing further. So this is where osteopathy can help. Our treatments involve joint mobilisations, soft tissue massage and we can give advice regarding ergonomic desk set ups, posture as well as give home exercises. Coeliac Disease While awareness of coeliac disease and the gluten-free diet is growing, there is still low awareness of the symptoms . The Greeks first described this disease in the 2nd Century AD and they called it Koiliakos Disease which means suffering in the bowels. Today the disease is called Coeliac Disease, which is derived from the Greek word Koiliakos.

Coeliac Disease and being allergic to Gluten are similar allergies but not exactly the same. A biopsy of the small intestine is the only way to successfully diagnose Coeliac disease.

Gluten contains a protein that is found in most grains such as wheat, rye, barley, and to a lesser extent oats. When the grains are ground into flower the gluten

Dealing with Hayfever Hayfever is an allergy to grass or hay pollen and can also include trees and weeds. People with asthma are likely to find their symptoms triggered by pollen too. So, what can you do to help relieve your symptoms? Hayfever prevents around 20 per cent of the UK from enjoying spring and summer. A time known for ice creams, sun cream, picnics and sunshine is marred for hayfever sufferers who instead are dealt the nasty effects of an allergic reaction. This reaction is caused by pollen spores which cause tight throats, stuffy noses, running eyes and headaches.

Air Purifiers Pollen and allergen spores trapped indoors can circulate constantly in a closed environment, an air purifier is specially designed to destroy these. Pollen spores are undetectable to the human eye, they get trapped in clothes, on pets, in the carpet, sofa and other fabrics. This can cause a lot of distress and sleepless nights as pollen spores circulate throughout the home. An air purifier can destroy these pollen spores and work silently throughout the night and day, allowing your home to be a safe haven from hayfever.

Nasal Sprays Steroid nasal sprays help to prevent or reduce inflammation in the lining of the nose and some can help to relieve watery eyes. Don't be put off by the fact

that the spray contains a steroid the dose is tiny and only goes where it's needed (it isn't absorbed into the rest of the body).



Take the dose as directed and as often.



Keep using the nasal spray even if your symptoms don't improve straight away. Sometimes it can take a while to make a difference.



See your GP or pharmacist after you've been using it for two to four weeks to confirm that this is the right treatment for you. Also see them if you experience any side effects (such as an unpleasant lingering taste or smell, nose bleeds or intense sneezing).

To use your nasal spray effectively here are some tips : 

Read the instructions that come in the box and check with your GP or pharmacist that you know how to use it correctly.



Start using it two weeks before the pollen that affects you comes into season.



Clear your nose and place your chin to your chest.



Hold the spray in your right hand for spraying into your left nostril and put the nasal spray into your nostril – make sure it's pointing into the side of your nose towards your ear.



Spray while breathing in slowly through your nose, but DO NOT sniff when you breathe in as this will take the spray into your throat and you'll swallow it, rather than keep it in your nose.

Antihistamines These can help to relieve a runny nose, sneezing, itching and watery eyes. Be aware though that some types of antihistamines make you drowsy and are best taken before bed. Newer antihistamines (known as nonsedating antihistamines) are less likely to make you drowsy and are a common choice for children and people with milder or occasional symptoms of hay fever. Antihistamines are available as tablets, in liquid form or as a nasal spray.

Totally Peaceful Relaxing Canal Holidays

Imagine gliding peacefully through beautiful countryside, avoiding all the rush hour traffic and slowing down the pace of your life to a gentle amble, then a canal cruising holiday will be very much your speed. Canals are not straight roads you rush down. Typically they turn around following the bends of the countryside, although, occasionally, you may find yourself going through a town – even through the centre of a major city. To liven the proceedings you will frequently come across locks which, in almost every case, you will have to work yourself. You soon get used to it. It is a small but pleasant skill that provides an enjoyable break in the day. It is also a good place to meet people from other boats who will be full of information and advice – some of it correct and valuable.

Basics If you are going to be operating the boat yourself – and there is no other way to totally enjoy the experience – then you need to be agile enough to get on and off the boat fairly quickly and you need to have somebody to steer. There are no high levels of skill involved in handling a canal boat. It is not like a yacht. Steering is either from a small hand wheel or a tiller at the back of the boat, and you have a throttle lever to control the speed. You carry your water and will have to re-fill the tanks every second day or so. You will not have that trouble with fuel as typically you will be supplied with enough to more than last for the duration of your holiday.

You can cook on the boats – all utensils are supplied – but you will probably find yourself having dinner at one of the many waterside hostelries. You will have to take with you proper boat shoes so that you do not slip on wet decks. Boats have all of the conveniences of home including showers, kitchens and television.

Places to visit The Kennet & Avon is an impressive feat of engineering, made up of two river navigations and a linking stretch of canal. It runs from the Severn Estuary near Bristol, through Newbury and to the River Thames at Reading, over 100 miles long with more than 100 locks, some magnificent engineering and crossing some very beautiful scenery. It was only reopened in 1990 after decades of dereliction. Norfolk Broads consists of canals and rivers connected to lakes which are called Broads. There are no locks in this area, but there are tides and you need to acquire the skill of using the tides to move you along. The Broads are very quiet and peaceful with a variety of water birds. Starting as a small trickle in the Cotswolds the River Thames travels over 210 miles through the heart of some

of England’s most picturesque towns, right into the centre of London and eventually, out into the North Sea. The locks right up to Oxford are worked by lock keepers, who know the area and are normally great characters in their own right.

I’m only a dog…RIGHT? We’ve all heard the saying ‘you are what you eat’ and, believe it or not, this also applies to our pets.

Do I really know what is in the food?

Their nutritional needs are very complex; the results of a poor diet that is not nutritionally balanced are not always obvious straightway, however you will notice over time. The danger is that we are inadvertently exposing our pets to a whole host of illnesses and diseases which leads to a very expensive vet’s bill in the long run.

If we use chicken as an example, ingredients that could be part of your dog’s food could be feathers, feet and heads or lovely white meat. What is important is the quality of protein and how digestible it is. If it can’t be easily digested and absorbed by the animal, then they are not getting the protein they need and you must feed a lot more, which means you have more to clear up, not to mention the strain on your poor dog’s digestive system and how much you must be paying out.

As dog owners, we want the best for our pets as they are part of our family. But sadly, in many cases, the choice of dog food is sometimes down to cost. However, in many cases it is false economy. A bag of food may seem cheap, but if the feeding rate is high, the cost per day could be comparable or indeed dearer than the more expensive bags. Be aware that not all food uses top quality ingredients and not all food is nutritionally balanced for the breed, age, activity level and environment of the animal. So, what can you do? Fuchsia Perfect I love hardy fuchsias. They are some of the most rewarding plants to grow. They are easy to propagate, flower well and are not the least bit temperamental. They are named after a 16th Century German herbalist and physician called Leonard Fuchs. Lots of gardeners struggle to spell fuchsia but if you think of his name and stick and ‘ia’ on the end you have it!
