What to Wear

Six Summer Switches By Mike Fleming

Y

Hot fashion essentials for hot weather that replace six dated items to stop wearing now ou’re thinking, I got this. The lazy days of summer make it the simplest season to dress for. But these six tweaks to your t-shirt-shorts-repeat routine can keep things easy-breezy, while keeping your style game on point.

You’re past the phase when trends ruled your life, but you still want to be up-to-date. While you weren’t looking, some items in your Straight leg, Slim-fit Chino The only thing straight about you may be these pants. Find the pair that fits best and then buy more in other colors. Too wide looks sloppy and says “Sad Dad” not “Hot Daddy.” Note that no one said “skinny.” It’s trendy, but unflattering on almost everbody. We recommend: Most styles by Bonobos, or J Crew 484 Cut for lean guys, 770 Urban Slim Cut for thicker boys Not: Boot cut or flared. Are the backs walkedon? Don’t even.

We know, you know, and all of gay Atlanta on a Midtown patio knows that we aren’t going to talk some guys out of their tank tops and flip-flops. These alternatives will still fit in while helping you stand out – in the very best way. Short-sleeve Henleys, Non-pique Polos, Colorblock Tees Your “ironic” graphic tee is still fine for working out and running errands, but these are the best ways to look like you tried harder without actually having to, well, try harder. We recommend: Paying closest attention to fit, and too tight is just as unflattering as too baggy. Not: Golf-length sleeves. Half-bicep is a good rule of thumb, tight enough to hug, not strangle, the upper arm.

Throwback Sunglasses Keep your aviators in rotation, but summer fun is your chance to mix it up. Wayfarers and round frames are both back because they work on so many faces. Think Kennedy in 1961 and Cruise in 1983. Now add tortoise texture and look at Orlando Bloom for 2016 inspiration.

Leather Tennis Shoe Some regions call all sneakers “tennis shoes,” but the actual shoe built for tennis, in white, are part of the ‘80s throwback thing that brought back the Wayfarer sunglasses. Agassi approved, and bonus: They literally go with everything, yes even that suit on the right occasion.

We recommend: Styles by Ray Ban, Warby Parker, America Optics

We recommend: Take a tip from the rest of the world: Adidas is the new Nike. Canvas versions for wetter occasions.

Not: Oakleys and other wraparounds. Just because your story starts, “The year was 1998,” doesn’t mean your sunglasses have to too.

Navy Summer Suit You want to wear shorts every day, but a summer suit is essential for fancy occasions or cranking up casual ones. The right one is simple and classic, in a lightweight blend that keeps its shape and doesn’t wrinkle too easily. And despite what Netflix lesbians say, navy is the OG new black. We recommend: Brand is less important than quality, but they often coincide. Find the right one for your body, then wear it with everything, even your inseparable tank top and sandals. Yes, really. Not: Overly wide or super skinny ties. Too far either way says that you’re trying to be cool more than you’re actually cool.

14  MAY 2016 • V2 I4

wardrobe became passé. Replace them with new go-to garments to refresh your summer style while you stay cool and classic.

Not: Flip flops are really only best near water. Leave them in the boathouse or by the shower.

Solid or Fine-print Flat-front Shorts Longer shorts have enjoyed a long comeback for decades, but heads up: The hems are rising again, to the excitement of gay leg men everywhere. We haven’t reached ‘70s-level short-shorts, but it’s time to start shifting your mindset. We recommend: Finding the perfect shorts in a 7” – 9” seam – yours are probably 10” – 12” right now – then buy them in multiple colors. They’re shorter than you’re used to, but not quite European-level awkward yet. Not: Bermudas or Cargo shorts. Phase out the former and eliminate the latter.

Chilling with Ladybird Ladybird Atlanta

By Mike Fleming

I

Daydrinking, dining and downtime dovetail on the perfect patio for Atlanta’s gay urban explorers

t’s hard to say what gets me going more. Warm weather? Weekends? Hanging with my gays? Sipping grown-up refreshments? Watching sexy joggers file by in short shorts? The best part about Ladybird Grove & Mess Hall in Old Fourth Ward is that I don’t have to choose. You don’t either.

A dozen local, artisanal drafts are on sale, but so are cans of Schlitz, Shiner and Jack’s. Wines come by the glass with a side jug for overage, and by the bottle. As a teetotaler, I had the seasonal lemonade, which was fantastic, and a refreshingly authentic ginger beer. What? Someone has to drive these queens.

Downtime and daydrinking collided on a recent Saturday that found the hip space twodeep at the bar with my lucky group at a sought-after table on the porch overlooking the bustling BeltLine. The lodge and travel motif – set off by a tree-bark bar, maps, communal tables, deer heads and a grizzly bear mural – is casual enough to handle my lively bunch, but just sophisticated enough to keep us in check if anyone really starts feeling his cocktails.

You may have noticed by now, as had I, that Ladybird has a sharp focus on its status as a hip, Old Fourth Ward bar created with off-the-clock urban explorers in mind. Definitely go there for a pre-dinner nip, but take heart that you can stay for the food and be glad you did.

The libations themselves range from house takes on classic Bloody Marys and Old Fashioneds, to original fare with names like Fool in the Rain (with brandy, pear and thyme) and Tiger by the Tail (with chai gin). But before you think there’s anything haughty going on, someone orders the Redneck Mimosa (Miller High Life and OJ), and someone else notices that the seasonal Patio Punch is served for parties of eight or 16, at $55 and $100 respectively.

16  MAY 2016 • V2 I4

Campfire-inspired offerings include a double-stack burger that’s greasy and cheesy just the way the good lord intended, with house pickle and aioli that tweak it into something special. A fried chicken bucket with three sides puts the colonel to shame, s’mores pie was the bomb, and a grilled spatchock chicken melt with avocado and Swiss was so good that a second was ordered by a neighboring foodie, but too late: They were out of key ingredients. Therein lies the biggest rub about Ladybird. The enjoyment of your surroundings may mean that the service is slow, if friendly. And you may not always be able to get what sounds good on the menu. Owner Michael Lennox and his pedigreed kitchen either haven’t found the right groove, don’t have enough competition to thin

out crowds of hungry BeltLine revelers clamoring for a seat, or maybe daily menu adjustments, surprise substitutions and ingredient-availability issues are just part of the charming flexibility that is life on Atlanta’s new urban landscape. Ladybird takes no reservations, which is fitting of the atmosphere and location. To circumvent menu shortage issues and to secure one of the coveted lanai tables, get there a little early. The gay gaggle shenanigans, and the aforementioned shirtless joggers, make the extra effort well worth it.

Work that Body

Urban Body

By Shannon Jenkins

Gay Atlanta’s own Urban Body guru serves up tips to get would-be fitness buffs started

shape.

“Start with what you’re eating,” says Slough, who owns Urban Body Fitness in Midtown’s Amsterdam Walk. “If it’s green and it was once alive, you can eat it. I don’t care whether it’s Brussels sprouts, spinach, kale, or green beans, or salad. The catch with salads is that’s a salad with dressing, not a dressing with salad. … Also, eat your proteins appropriately.” And sorry, cocktailers: Slough considers booze to be hollow calories. “If you’re not doing anything to burn those extra calories off, that’s just weight going to your waistline,” he says. “If you do continue to drink, it’s going to slow that progress down a lot.” Then it’s time for exercise. Slough lays out seven basics that help put getting started in perspective. Start Slow “Don’t jump into weights,” Slough warns. “Start with cardio. Build that stamina up a little bit for at least a couple of weeks. Work out three or four times a week.” A simple way to start burning calories is to walk as much as possible. “Don’t go to the grocery store in the car,” Slough suggests. “If you’re within a half mile of the gro-

cery store, get you one of those folding carts. If you eat out a lot, walk to the restaurant.” Get Moving Slough also suggests finding an active interest or hobby. Rock climbing, bicycling and hiking North Georgia’s miles of scenic trails are just a few ideas. Home Remedies When you can’t get to a gym on a given day, Slough recommends online video workouts from Men’s Fitness and Men’s Health, which usually offer alternative moves based on your fitness level.

Variety is the Spice “Don’t do the same exercise routine for more than approximately a month,” Slough recommends. “Take classes along with your weight workouts to vary what you’re doing so you aren’t bored.” Urban Body Fitness, 500 Amsterdam Avenue, offers classes including spinning, aerobics and bootcamp. Urban Body Studios does yoga, pilates and TRX, and Urban Body Spa & Salon offers a full range of services. Visit urbanbodystudios.com

Attainable Goals Urban Body’s head fitness guru encourages beginners to set realistic goals, accomplish them in small chunks, and reward yourself each time you meet one. Don’t Overdo It The best advice is sometimes the simplest: Don’t overdo it. “Don’t start out so hard that you’re so sore that you don’t want to lift again,” Slough says. “I had never lifted before, and I did a full-body workout. I had to hold my arm up to brush my teeth. I used a hairdryer at the time, and I had to put my elbow on the wall and move my head back and forth. I was so sore.”

Grand vacations are great, but our gay neighbors across the region are ready and able to help daytrippers and weekenders relax, refresh and recharge

B

igger trips to far-flung destinations may be in your longer-term plans, but the arrival of hot weather here at home means it’s officially time to mark your calendars for regional road trips. Nothing will get you in the summer spirit better than flying your colors with our gay neighbors across the Southeast. Here’s our quick guide to the hottest destinations for gay daytrippers and weekenders that we know you’ll want to visit.

You don’t have to go far to feel like you’re a world away. So schedule a few days off work, and gas up your cars for road trips to some of the season’s best gay happenings in Georgia, Florida and South Carolina. Memorial Day Weekend Pensacola, Florida May 26 – May 30 Normally a sleepy little city at the tip of Florida’s panhandle, Pensacola comes to life when some 200,000 swimsuited gay people – a sizeable contingent of them from Atlanta – flock to its pristine white beaches to completely take over Memorial Day Weekend. Five days of decadent fun in the sun include beach time with guys from around the country, of course, but there’s more. Expect sexy parties all day and delicious men dancing poolside by night.

20  MAY 2016 • V2 I4

Nightlife events include spontaneous hotel and house parties, as well as sponsored affairs by The Portofino Island Resort (portofinoisland. com), and discos set up on the sand with DJs spinning your favorite tracks. Also, don’t forget to check out the local bars such as Emerald City (emeraldcitypensacola.com), The Roundup, and the Cabaret. One Magical Weekend/ Gay Days at Disney Orlando, Florida June 3 – June 5 Just a week after Pensacola, Disney goes officially gay for one of the most exciting weekends of any year. In addition to daily “Therapy” pool parties featuring speedo clad men at the B Resort & Spa, which also hosts the GayBiz expo inside, there’s nightly “Cadabra” Afterparties at Mango’s Orlando. Some come early to sprinkle their fairy dust over awesome rides, but everyone is there when the time comes to hit the street party and get moving with throngs of men dancing to thundering beats. Riptide at Typhoon Lagoon features DJs Alexander and Eddie Martinez on Friday, and Saturday’s main event at Disney’s Hollywood Studios features DJs Dee Martello and Nina Flowers. The “Magical” weekend wraps with DEEP at Epcot World Showplace. Expect DJ duo Rosabel, an award winning fireworks display, light show,

lasers, video walls, amazing costumes and sexy go-go dancers as Epcot turns into the hottest nightclub around. Weekend passes start at $267 and can now be paid in monthly installments. Visit onemagicalweekend.com. Prides of the Southeast Augusta, Charleston, Savannah Augusta Pride takes place June 24-25. For the 7th year on the traditionally recognized Stonewall Weekend, the Beats on Broad dance party kicks things off Friday night. The parade down Broad Street takes place Saturday, followed immediately by the festival, which includes performances by Lazaro Arbos from American Idol Season 12, David Hernandez, and the legendary CeCe Peniston. Offsite parties at gay bars are also on the agenda. Visit prideaugusta.org. Charleston Pride takes place August 6 – 14. The city is working to change its religiously conservative image and embracing diversity at its 6th annual Pride celebration. The parade and Pride Rally are set for Saturday, August 13, and parties all week long include events at local gay bars, a beach party, the Drag Brunch, and more. Visit charlestonpride.org. Savannah Pride is set for October 22. Once held earlier in the year, Savannah takes a cue from Atlanta this year and moves to a season of cooler temps. The city’s breathtaking views along the coast with its old-town feel and Spanish Moss-covered oaks are the backdrop for Pride. In addition to the festival, which offers VIP perks for sale this year, expect the Savannah Pride White Party, as well as multiple tea dances and pool parties. Visit savannahpride.com

TOUR de MEN

H

By Mike Fleming

aving a boyfriend at every stop on a world tour might sound far-fetched, but what else would take a gay trek around the world from fun to fab? Gallant gay guides, of course. That’s why this tour comes via the guys you could meet on each sensational stop.

Dream big with these guys ready to show you a good time wherever you hang your hat.

YOUR BOYFRIEND IN CAPE TOWN The guy you meet in Cape Town, South Africa, is most likely as worldly as the city he calls home. Some of most immaculate beaches on the planet, including exclusively gay beaches at Clifton, as well as shopping and dining on Camps Bay, are five-to-ten minutes from this internationally savvy city. Make sure your guy takes you to the Atlantic side of the cape, affectionately nicknamed the South African Riviera, and set aside an afternoon to drive down the coast for breathtaking views. Back in town, the quaint inner-city village of De Waterkant is Cape Town’s gay central. Gay bars include Bar Code, Beaulah, Crew and Amsterdam Action Bar. You might decide to sleep in the waterfront burgh of Green Point at hotels like DysArt. And the right Cape Town guy won’t let you leave without checking into the Winelands for shopping, wining and dining.

24  MAY 2016 • V2 I4

YOUR BOYFRIEND IN RIO DE JANEIRO After the world turns away from the Summer Games, book your next visit with your Brazilian beau. When the temperatures moderate and the tourism season wanes, this party boy will still have plenty of warm beaches, hot social hours and scorching nightlife to share. Like the syncopated rhythms of the Samba-style dance he’s named after, your “Carioca” – what natives of Rio call themselves – has the inside scoop on gay life in one of South America’s most gay-friendly cities. From the laid-back vibe on gay beaches like Ipanema Farme de Amoedo, Copacabana and Arpoador, to cosmopolitan dining at gay-owned Confiteria Colombo and shopping in gayborhoods like Lebion and Leme, there’s something for every mood that strikes here. When the sun goes down, enjoy two-dozen gay clubs including The Week, Le Boy and Zero Zero. Visit rio.gaycities.com.

YOUR BOYFRIEND IN COLOGNE Other guys in bigger German cities get a lot of love from gay tourists, but your boyfriend in Cologne, like his home town, is considered the most laid back and approachable in West Germany. He loves wiling away the hours in outdoor cafes in Rudolfplatz and pubs in Old Town. Cologne is the Atlanta of Germany. No wonder you get along so well. As Atlanta is mecca of the gay South, Cologne stands apart as the real gay capital of West Germany for its friendly people and easy-going atmosphere. It’s about the same size as metro Atlanta in population, and was also nearly destroyed by war, so its mix of old and new is rich with history like the Cologne Cathedral. Make plans with this guy for Bear Days, May 5-8, or during Cologne Gay Pride July 1-3. Visit patroc.com/cologne

YOUR BOYFRIEND IN MONTREAL Say “oui” to your favorite French Canadian in the City of Saints and the Village of Gays. Yes, really. The gayborhood here is called Le Village Gai. Nestled in the Ville-Marie, it’s home to thousands of LGBT residents including your personal out-and-proud host. The Village is the perfect jumping off point to the rest of the city from the centrally located Beaudry Metro Station. Your issue-oriented guy is proud of his rich history in one of world’s most gay-friendly cities, and with good reason. The oldest recorded gay establishment in North America, Montrealer Moise Tellier’s cake shop, opened here in 1869, a century before Stonewall. Gay bars run the gamut from drag bar Cabaret Mado, to quirky dive bar Notre-Dame des Quilles, to the expansive Appollon nightclub. Ask your guy if you can stay the week of August 8 for Montreal Pride. Visit tourisme-montreal.org.

YOUR BOYFRIEND IN SINGAPORE Asia is known for its accommodating gentlemen and business-minded men. Your gay guide is a little of both, just like the way his exotic city-state island combines Southeast Asia’s old worlds and new. Let him guide you through sprawling urban areas and tiny villages within just a few miles of each other. As this cosmopolitan guy lets you into his world via native culture and urban excursions, make sure he shows you around Chinatown – yes, even this former Chinese province has a Chinatown – where Tantric Bar and May Wong’s Café cater to gay customers. It’s also where you’ll find the Cruise Club sauna, which you can expect to live up to its name, and the Shuang Spa, where the region’s famous happy-ending massages come to life with a gay twist.

YOUR BOYFRIEND IN VENICE There’s no question which of your international boyfriends is most cultured and charming, so you may lose yourself in his watery blues that match the city’s famous waterways cultivated when the city sank into the Adriatic centuries ago. Ask your gay guide for a romantic ride on one of the signature gondolas. You’ll float lazily between the city’s distinct island burroughs including Murano, the only place in the world where authentic Murano glass is made, and the least expensive place to buy it. Unlike its big-city Italian brethren, the gayest thing about perfectly sleepy Venice – besides you and the man you’re here to see – is the Metro Venezia, a bathhouse. Gay-friendly hotels include Antico Panada in San Marco, Haven Hosel San Toma in San Polo, and the Venice Ai Carmini in Dorsoduro. Luxuriate in the outdoor cafes in tucked-away corners or wide-open squares like Plazza San Marco. Be sure to visit the Guggenheim Museum, named for the American socialite who founded its New York sister venue and lived among her collected modern works here. Visit travelgayeurope.com. CAME OUT SWINGING Atlanta’s gay softball teams are always in a league of their own all year long, but never quite like this. Hotlanta Softball League gathered at Jungle on April 16 to crown this year’s Mr. HSL and hit a home run for fun, fellowship and fair play. Team players competed in uniform, swimsuit and talent before Kevin “Biscuit” Hill of the Oscar’s Atlanta Sting team was named Mr. HSL 2016. Proceeds benefit Lost N Found Youth and the Atlanta teams of the Gay Softball World Series. Visit hotlantasoftball.org.

G O LIATH

WELL HELLO.

IT’S DEVEN GREEN DEVEN GREEN is an award-winning comedy performer. You know her from the “Welcome To My Home” parodies, as the satirical Betty Bowers – America’s Best Christian, OCCmakeup ads, “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” World of Wonder, and performing her live music shows in brothels across America. DevenGreen.com Dear Deven: I will be going to my first formal dinner function. I need tips! “Dining in Douglasville” Sit where you are seated. If something falls on the floor there is no 5-second rule. Don’t ask for a doggy bag or dipping sauce. Send a thank you note the next day. Dear Deven: What is the best way to send my list of food allergies to the hosts of several parties I am attending? “Fussy in Fayette County” Honestly darling, you are being high-maintenance. Bring your own food that way you know it is safe. You are going to their party not their restaurant. Dear Deven: I am hosting a champagne brunch and just saw the price of champagne. How can I do this on the cheap? “Scrimping in Smyrna” Offer both champagne and sparking water. Or, pour half champagne and half juice. Or, serve an inexpensive champagne and put a raspberry in it because that’s fancy. Dear Deven: What is the best way to serve appetizers? “Forked in Fairburn” With a toothpick. Dear Deven: I have a friend who is invited to EVERYTHING even though we know all the same <expletive deleted> people. I’m not always invited. It’s just not fair. “Sour in Sandy Springs” The answer to your non-existent question is that jealousy is a disease. Examine one quality that your friend has and admire him for it as opposed to being bound to him with the sickness of envy. Dear Deven: What is the best way to decline an invitation? “Backing out in Brookhaven” You say, “It’s simply impossible.” You aren’t lying. Dear Deven: What’s the proper way to let dinner guests know they’ve overstayed their welcome and need to head home? ”Impatient in Ivey” Be polite yet direct. Offer to walk them to their car or, give them a doggy bag that must be refrigerated or, better yet, come on to them - either they will leave immediately or you will both get a second dessert. Dear Deven: We want to have an activity after our guests have eaten. Any suggestions? “Wondering in Winder” Have them do the dishes! If you have great friends then activities are just options and not necessities. Dear Deven: At the end of the day we just want to eat at home and unwind in front of the TV. Is it okay that we never want to go out? “Reclining in Roswell” Move your chairs to the porch – now you are out. Instead of laughing at a TV show you two can laugh at the rest of the world together.
