ong, dark nights, falling leaves, the possibility of snow… this issue we’re celebrating all things winter. As a self-confessed sun worshiper, a winter wedding is not something I considered. But, after working on this issue, I'll be urging my friends to marry in the chilly season. And, if I ever renew my vows, winter just might be the time to do so. Is there anything more magical than cosying up with all of the people you love, surrounded by twinkling lights, candles and a roaring fire as the night draws in? In this months issue, we have created an A-Z guide on planning the perfect winter wedding (page 62), glimmering themes to help you style your day (pages 58 and 66) and pages of gowns with show-stopping sleeves (page 23), to ensure your aisle style is in keeping with the season. Real couple, Max and Ella, show us how to make the most of the festive period for your celebration on page 80 and Liberty Pearl Photography and Film give us even more inspiration with a Winter’s Tale styled photoshoot on page 54. After the big day you’re sure to want to get away from it all, weather included, so we have rounded up some beautiful beachside destinations (page 117) for you to beat the winter blues on your honeymoon. Plus, we bring you the chance to win a seven-night honeymoon in the Riviera Maya (page 124). The next issue is on sale on the 11th December, until then you’ll find us watching festive films (The Holiday, with chocolates from under the tree, naturally) and falling in love with the season all over again!

How to style

Andrew Barton talks us through three of his favourite bridal up-dos to help you choose how to wear your hair

your hair

Styling hair for a bride’s big day takes lots of planning and often multiple trials to get it just right and in line with the bride’s vision – everything needs to be perfect! Andrew works with the bride to create a hair style that complements the gown, the bride’s face shape and her features, taking any accessories into consideration and, of course, how the bride wants to feel about herself on the day. From structured and formal to relaxed and casual here are three of his favourite bridal hair-up’s that all have a signature of sophistication and elegance. LOOK 1 This look takes inspiration from a Grecian goddess. Worn slightly tousled to give a natural, relaxed effect, it's still groomed enough to hold together all day. Flattering for smaller figures it adds volume and texture throughout the hair, while not looking over-set or too 'done'. Gently pinned at the back of the head it’s a great hairstyle to complement gowns with fuller skirts and can be perfectly accessorised with flowers to add to an ethereal effect.

LOOK 3 A twist on a classic chignon, this is a perfect style for the bride who doesn't want to touch or worry about her hair at all during the big day. Some brides like to change their hair for the evening, while others prefer a hairstyle that will stay put without any help and this look does just that. With all the hair pinned back away from the face it tends to complement gowns with a classic, body-hugging silhouette, and adds to the overall streamlined look. The hair can be arranged higher or lower on the crown to accentuate the face shape and profile. I love this look when it’s teamed with dramatic eye makeup and glittering hair accessories.

LOOK 2 A perfect combination of half-up, half-down, this is one of the most popular bridal styles and it suits everyone. The majority of the hair is pinned back, away from the face, creating height and volume at the crown, which is super flattering for all face shapes and figures. The gentle wisps of hair around the face soften the overall look and more can be added for those brides that don’t want their face fully exposed. Once the hair is pinned back from the face, the remaining hair is tousled using a tong for an au natural wave. I generally use Racoon Luxe Weft hair extensions through the ponytail at the back to give a longer and fuller effect. 40

Professional makeup artist Christina Cooling shares her expert secrets for flawless bridal beauty

glow-down WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO PREPARE THE SKIN BEFORE THE BIG DAY?

To prepare your skin for your wedding, you need to adopt good skincare habits at least six months in advance and work on achieving your bridal glow from the inside out. You are what you eat and so is your skin, so it is imperative you make positive changes to feel and look the best you can. The most effective steps are to start drinking the recommended daily amount of water, increasing your consumption of super foods, get more sleep, cut out too much alcohol and quit smoking if appropriate. Good skincare doesn’t need to cost thousands of pounds, but I would recommend scheduling a few professional facials to reveal your best complexion. A word of caution: do not get a deep-cleansing facial within a week of your wedding as breakouts are likely. Simple but important things you can do at home are: exfoliate weekly, invest in a good cleanser, use skin specific moisturisers, invest in an eye cream and practice a safe suncare regime. I would recommend buying the award-winning book “Skincare” by Caroline Hirons. It is the go-to book for people of all ages and skin types who want to feel and look fantastic. WHAT COLOUR EYE MAKEUP USUALLY WORKS BEST FOR BRIDES? I believe there should be no rules to eye makeup colours as every bride and wedding is unique, however there are useful guidelines to follow depending on your desired outcome. For example, if you really want your eye colour to ‘pop’, using the colour wheel can help when choosing the complementary colours; if you have green eyes, rose golds, bronzes, burgundy and purple tones can look stunning. The best eyeshadow to choose is one that enhances the natural sparkle of your eye colour and I would recommend a palette that has a selection of at least four shades to add depth and definition: a natural shade, a transitional shade, a contour shade and a highlighting shade.

W and H Promotion HOW DO YOU CREATE THE PERFECT, LONG LASTING LIP? Creating a long-lasting, smudge-proof lip is so important on your wedding as you don’t want to spend all day topping up your lipstick or worrying that half of it has transferred on to your teeth or half-way down your chin. They say failing to prepare is preparing to fail, so follow these five steps to create the perfect, lasting lip. • Before you even think about applying any lipstick, you need to exfoliate and hydrate your lips to get rid of any excess dry, flaky skin. Simply use a lip-scrub or toothbrush and lip primer to give you the smoothest possible pout and ensure you have an even, flawless base to work with. • Next, apply concealer to create the perfect neutral canvas; not only will it cancel your own lips natural hue but also provide beautiful and accurate colour payoff and prevent any product bleeding. • Lip Liner is your new best friend; you can use it to accentuate the shape of your lips and the secret is to apply liner all over your lips, not just the outline as the slightly drier formula gives creamy lipsticks something to cling on to and acts as a barrier to prevent transfer. • A simple, yet effective trick is to gently blot your lips with a clean tissue after applying your first coat. Blotting your lips is key for longevity as it helps to prevent shifting the formula by getting rid of any excess product or oils that may otherwise slide. • Think powder is just for your face? Think again. After your second coat, follow with a light dusting of translucent powder to ensure all excess product is removed. The main reason lipstick transfers or feathers is due to excess moisture and applying a powder formula on top reduces this obstacle and helps your lipstick to stay in place all day.

WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TO BRIDES CREATING THEIR OWN MAKEUP LOOK? Don’t lose your sense of self by getting caught up in beauty trends, marketing hype and feeling pressured to follow the latest craze; do your research and ensure you are choosing the correct products that suit your complexion, colouring and chosen look. Your wedding is one of the most-photographed days of your life and your focus should be on enhancing your natural beauty. To create your own makeup look on your wedding day, you need to feel calm, in control and confident of your application method, so practice, practice, practice and don’t go in unprepared; I would recommend writing a step-by-step plan to ensure you don’t miss any steps out. Try to create a calm station with all of your products and brushes and allow ample time, so if any mistakes are made, they can be corrected. I would invest time in watching online tutorials to boost your confidence or even better, book in for a one-to-one masterclass with a professional Makeup Artist, like myself, to develop your skills and techniques.

MAKEUP BY CHRISTINA COOLING PHOTOGRAPHY BY VERA CHANGE PHOTOGRAPHY

IS THERE ANYTHING TO AVOID, MAKEUPWISE ON A WEDDING DAY? If there is a chance of flash photography, the main thing to avoid on your wedding day is sun cream because the zinc and titanium oxides that are often found in SPF formulas can cause an unflattering ghostly glow on your face. You also want to avoid any products that can’t withstand true emotion, most importantly mascara; always choose and fully embrace waterproof formulas. Also, avoid using too much foundation. It is crucial to find the balance between makeup that looks beautiful in photographs and provides longevity and makeup that feels natural and lightweight in person. I like to use the less is more approach and be able to see the skin glowing underneath. My top tip is to use a light to medium coverage foundation and just spot conceal where you may need any extra coverage.

From flowers to candles and place names to games, reception tables are key to setting your theme and giving your guests a good time. Our Art Director and resident brideto-be, Beth Eccles, talks through some beautiful ways to style your reception tables

You'd think working on a wedding magazine, I'd know exactly what I wanted my wedding to look like. Well, I thought the same until it actually came down to planning the big day. So, while on the hunt for my perfect table centres, I"m sharing with you what I've found and learned to help you create your perfect wedding day look. A lot of factors will play a part in the theme for your big day, but the venue and the season will be front and centre in your styling. Creating your table centres is crucial to give guests a taste of your theme and it's an easy area to style. If you'll be throwing your reception in a barn venue, reflect the setting with log slices and lots of foliage across the tables. For a wedding in a castle, large, elegant floral centrepieces will be more in keeping with the overall look. Of course, budget plays a large part in how simple or how extravagant your decoration will be. So, if like me, table centrepieces are an area you want to save a little, there are lots of DIY hacks that you can use to do this. From fairy lights in 46

DECEMBER

empty bottles or vases from a charity shop to fresh flowers picked from your garden, dried and displayed in jam jars. Alternatively, spread the cost by purchasing faux flowers over the course of your engagement and create vines of floral table runners. If you've budgeted more money for your table centres then there really is nothing prettier than filling your tables with beautiful, fresh blooms. Speak to your florist about your vision and watch them as they bring it to life. They will usually have vases, urns, boxes and many more pretty items for you to display your flowers. You also need to think about place name cards, favours, plate chargers and even table games for your guests to play. These might all seem like minor details but are what will make your tables beautiful and memorable for your guests. So, get inspired by the best table centre ideas, from candles to fairy lights and flowers to faux foliage, and go to page 51 for pretty place name card ideas...

Cake by

numbers

In this instance, size does matter! Use this guide and figuring out how many tiers you’ll need on your wedding day will be a piece of cake…

W

hen it comes to the wedding cake your first thoughts will be about how you want it to look and what flavours you would choose for the tiers. But before your ideas get too elaborate, first consider how much cake you will actually need and map out a recipe for success… With your budget and guest numbers in mind, cook up the perfect amount by ensuring you have enough tiers to feed all of your guests but not so many that you are left with tons of cake after the big day – especially if you plan on jetting off on your honeymoon straight after the wedding and the left-over cake will be wasted.

Cutting up the cake

If you love tall cakes but know that your guests won't get through it all speak to your cake maker about narrower, taller tiers to give the height you want but without the extra cake. Alternatively, you can ask your baker about adding dummy tiers. Made from a polystyrene base, covered in icing and decorated to match the rest of your cake, dummy tiers are often used in larger cakes and your guests will never guess it’s not the real thing. This can help a little towards

48

DECEMBER

staying within budget, but the decorating time will take just as long, meaning the price reduction might not be as much as you'd first think. Dummy tiers will be ruled out for semi-naked or naked cakes for obvious reasons. Single-tier cakes are very en vogue right now. If this is your preference but you have a larger guests list how about a feature cake table with multiple single-tiers displayed? Or, you could choose to display one single-tier but have an extra cake ready to slice kept in the kitchen for later. Factor in whether you want to save any of the cake. In years past, the top tier of a traditional fruit cake would be saved and then served at the Christening of the firstborn child, however, this tradition hasn’t stood the test of time. Fruitcake is less popular, with couples opting for various sponge flavours that don’t keep as long and often can't be frozen. Nevertheless, you might want to save some cake to enjoy together after the wedding, while you open any cards and gifts and reminisce about the events of the big day.

If you are cutting up the wedding cake yourselves, cut across the cake in straight lines, cutting off a slab at a time, and then portion it into servings rather than cutting the cake into wedges. This will make the cake go further and help you to get the portions the same size. Check with your venue if it is your responsibility or if their chef will cut the cake for you.

A Winter's

Tale

One look at this photoshoot and it will be love at frost sight! PHOTOGRAPHY BY LIBERTY PEARL PHOTO & FILM A celebration of the season, this photoshoot showcases how beautiful it can be to get married in the winter, surrounded by icy details. From crystalised sugar along the tiers of cake, echoing icicles, to snow confetti for an ultra-romantic confetti moment, the styling here boasts some of the prettiest, wintery details and ideas. A dress change into a sparkly gown may inspire you to change your look for the evening, while the table arrangements will show you that seasonal foliage and greenery can be just as stunning as fresh flowers. Light-up letters, fairy lights and metallic, hanging decorations illuminate the Orangery at Deer Park, which created the perfect setting for the photoshoot to take place.

Fylla

A Grecian theme with an elegant colour palette PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATE CULLEN Inspired by nature, the team behind this photoshoot created a romantic, timeless look using seasonal, sustainable and ethical details. A nod toward Grecian styling is reflected in the blooms, one-shoulder gown, and headpieces. For the Omorfa Fylla shoot, meaning beautiful leaves in Greek, a colour palette of rich emerald greens paired with warm caramels and corals were the perfect accent to the otherwise all-white look. The venue itself, a restored silk mill, created the perfect black canvas.

Walking in a

An A-Z guide to planning a wonderful winter wedding…

winter wonderland

The season of sparkle! A winter wedding calls for all the glitz and glam. From the wardrobe to the decor, silvers and golds will become a running theme, paired with luxurious fabrics and twinkling lights. Keep cosy with heavy throws and open fires, and feast on indulgent dishes. A winter wedding is certainly something to look forward to. Here, we get to grips on how you can make your seasonal soirée merry and bright…

A

IS FOR AFFORDABILITY Much like UK holidays, the colder months are usually considered out of season for weddings. But, booking your wedding between October and March often results in more bang for your buck and you can usually get a great deal on your venue, catering

62

DECEMBER

and photographer, giving you a little more budget to spend elsewhere.

B

IS FOR BLANKETS When you think of winter weddings the first thing that springs to mind is the colder weather. Keep guests warm and toasty with a selection of snuggly blankets for them to wrap up in. Pop them in baskets near the doorways for people to help themselves as the night draws in.

C

IS FOR COLOUR PALETTE Go bold with your colour scheme for a winter celebration, think rich plums, deep burgundy and elegant emerald teamed with metallic touches for a sophisticated affair.

Planning

D

IS FOR DRESS TO IMPRESS When you send out your invitations include details for your dress code, perhaps you want everyone to arrive in black tie, or tweeds and tartans are the vibe you're after for your winter celebration. Groomsmen can step out in waistbands and bowties or herringbone woolen suits, while the bridal party can be adorned in statement bling, pretty dresses with elegant sleeves and faux-fur wraps, shawls or capes.

E

IS FOR ENTERTAINMENT It’s highly likely that guests will be spending the majority of the day inside, keeping out of the cold. Think about the space in your venue and how you can best use it to entertain your guests, whether that’s with live music during the drinks reception, a live painter or a magician performing for guests in the evening.

F

IS FOR FIRE PIT Islanders please all gather around the fire pit… If you’re a fan of Love Island you’ll know that a gathering around the fire pit usually involves a lot of drama, but a gathering around the fire pit involves dramatics of a different kind on your wedding day. This is the perfect moment to embrace the elements for sparklers and toasted marshmallows with your guests.

G

IS FOR GLITZ AND GLAMOUR Decorate your venue with shimmering details, from gold foil and edible sequins on the cake to metallic pompoms hanging from the ceiling.

H

IS FOR HEARTY FOOD Serve up hot canapés during your welcome drinks followed by seasonal starters, hearty mains and indulgent desserts for your wedding breakfast. Comfort food is always a winner in the winter. Choose fun and filling evening food, like pizza, a hog roast or fish and chip cones to keep guests going into the night.

I

IS FOR INSIDE SPACE If you are choosing to hold a winter wedding, select your venue carefully. Choose somewhere that has plenty of inside space and areas for photographs indoors as well as out. Most of the day will be spent inside so a small marquee probably isn’t going to cut it.

J

IS FOR JOY Fill your day with joy! Everything you choose should be because you love it,

from the guest list to the decorations, the menu to the music. Follow this very simple rule and you are sure to have the most wonderful day ever.

K

IS FOR KEEPSAKES Present your guests with fun, festive favours. Think mini fur trees, little snow globes or personalised baubles for guests to hang on their tree when they get home.

L

IS FOR LIGHT THE WAY Create an atmospheric space by dotting lots of votives, taper candles and tea lights all around your venue, along windowsills and table tops. Make a feature space with large church candles in a variety of sizes and choose hurricane vases with candles inside for your centrepiece. Large lanterns will light up outdoor entrances and pathways, while twinkling fairy lights can be strung up along beans or from the ceiling.

M

IS FOR MUSIC A choir singing as you walk down the aisle will be something you and your guests will remember forever. Carollers' voices softly filling the venue while you enjoy your welcome drinks will create a jolly, festive feel and a live band in the evening will keep the party going and the guests dancing.

N

IS FOR NATURE When it comes to your wedding flowers chose seasonal blooms and opt for lots of foliage to keep the costs down and avoid needing your flowers to be shipped from further afield. Ask your florist to add berries, pine cones and even feathers for elegant winter arrangements.

O

IS FOR OUT WITH A BANG The longer nights are the perfect excuse to have a sparkler send-off or a show-stopping firework display. Guests will love it and your photographs will be ever-so romantic!

P

IS FOR PHOTOGRAPHS An earlier sunset means you can really make the most of the golden hour on a clear day. When the weather seems more challenging embrace it. Take a white umbrella out with you and your photographer can get some beautiful silhouette shots in the rain. WEDDINGSANDHONEYMOONSMAGAZINE.COM

63

that tie in with your scheme, make sure you have plenty of umbrellas to hand for the wedding party and for your guests. Use them as props in your photographs, too. Check out brollybucket.co.uk to protect you from the rain.

V

IS FOR VELVET Keep the wedding party warm in plush velvet jackets for the men and soft velvet gowns for the girls. Choose velvet ribbons to tie around your bouquets and crushed velvet table runners to add a touch of luxury to your table displays.

W

IS FOR WELCOME DRINKS Serve mulled wine or mulled cider for festive and warming welcome drinks. In the evening treat all of your guests to a rich hot chocolate or a liquor coffee to celebrate both the season and your nuptials.

X

IS FOR XMAS Christmas trees, festive wreaths and evergreen branches all have a place at a winter wedding. Wreaths can be hanging around your venue or placed around candles as centrepieces. And, don’t forget the mistletoe! Hang some in the entrance and above the top table for a romantic nod to a festive theme.

Y

IS FOR YULE LOG Display a huge yule log on a dessert table or instead of a tiered wedding cake. Covered in chocolate and in keeping with the season, it will be enjoyed by all.

Z Q

IS FOR QUIET For something different that your guests will love (and the neighbours will too) hire a silent disco, we can recommend somersetsilentdisco.co.uk for a fun-filled party. Choose three different playlists for guests to pick from. Once they’ve found their favourite, you're guaranteed to have a full dance floor all night.

R

IS FOR REINDEER Incorporate reindeer into your day with illustrated stationery, chocolate reindeer wedding favours or an iced reindeer on your cake. Ceramic stag heads surrounded with flowers make beautiful centrepieces for your tables and, depending where you get married, reindeer could even make an appearance on the day. At Gwel An Mor there are reindeer at the on-site Feadon Wildlife Centre that you can meet on your wedding day and pose for a photo with.

S

IS FOR SNOW CONFETTI Replace petal or paper confetti with snow confetti for a wintery confetti moment. Try dollzconfetti.com.uk for biodegradable confetti that falls just like snow as it is thrown over you for good luck.

T

IS FOR TRANSPORT Choose your transport depending on your venue, and remember it will likely be cold and wet. How about a vintage car for a country house? Or a horse-drawn carriage, complete with blankets to keep you warm on the journey, for a church ceremony. For a city venue in London what about a classic black cab or a London bus if you have lots of bridesmaids to transport too?

U

IS FOR UMBRELLA Whether you choose all white brollies or an array of colours

64

DECEMBER

IS FOR GETTING YOUR ZZZ’S Choose a venue that has overnight accommodation so that once the party is over you can stagger off to bed without having to face the weather and endure a chilly journey home. WH

Glamour

Drama, romance, opulence… fall in love with this detailed shoot PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNA BETH

With the aim of bringing together haute couture details and the beauty of nature, the team behind this photoshoot created a lavish secret garden theme. Florals play a major part in the styling, with blooms bursting out of lined envelopes, the edible variety garnishing pretty cocktails and a decadant cake featuring hand-painted florals. Black, purples and greens with accents of glimmering gold created an opulent colour palette, while the Chinese gardens within the grounds of Grantley Hall made the perfect backdrop. The model makes a statement in a high-drama, fashion-forward, black, ballgown. The look is softened with a delicate up-do and frilly blooms in her bouquet.

Spoken

from the heart

Unlike a registrar-led ceremony, which is based around a template that only allows for a few changes, a celebrant-led ceremony gives couples absolute creative freedom; it's truly about them and their personal love story.

When a couple book me as their celebrant, they know their wedding ceremony will not only be beautiful, but bespoke and individual, too. Something many people don't realsie is that a celebrant-led ceremony can be performed anywhere you like. I conducted lots of ceremonies in beautiful wedding venues, but I have also conducted them in the couples' own garden, by a lake and a even in a woodland setting at sunset; the wonderful thing is they have a choice. I always take time to get to know my couples and am on hand to help and guide them when it comes to personalising their ceremony. There are many ways to do this, including involving family and friends, with meaningful readings, their favourite music, and, if they 74

wish, a ceremony ritual such as handfasting or sand ceremony (you can find out more about symbolic ceremony rituals on page 76). When it comes to the vows, some couples want the more traditional ones, while others would prefer me to write ones especially for them. Some couples prefer to take the time to write their own vows, and again, whatever they would like goes. This is what makes each ceremony truly individual. I spend some time writing the first draft of their love story and ceremony, and after they have read it through, we arrange a catch up. It's always good to chat through any changes they would like to make properly, to ensure I say the words they would like to hear on the day. Once they are happy, I then spend lots of time reading it through. I like to make sure it's as close to perfect as possible when the time comes for me to conduct the ceremony.

SKYPHOTOGRAPHY.CO.UK

The week before their big day, I check in with the couple and, if required, meet them at the venue the day before to conduct the rehearsal. Then on the day, I am always super excited, having made sure the couple's ceremonial certificate and presentation script are ready, double checking I have everything I need for the day. I always leave plenty of time to drive to the venue; I would rather get there too early than be rushing or, god forbid, be late! However, I usually arrive around 90 minutes before the ceremony, so I have time to chat with the wedding planner and make sure everything is as it should be. I do a soundcheck if needed before setting up and getting ready. I often have a chance to chat with some of the guests before taking my place with the groom and am on hand to calm a few pre-ceremony nerves he may have. Then the music starts playing, and then all the months of planning finally come together!

One by one, the wedding party enters, and as the bride takes her place, it's now my turn to show all the hard work has paid off and for me to deliver a beautifully perfected bespoke ceremony. From the welcome through to the presentation of the happy couple, I love to see the beautiful reactions of my couple and their guest, from tears of joy, laughter, and huge smiles. Before I know it, the ceremony is coming to an end, and the happy couple are heading back down the aisle to a huge round of applause. With more and more couples realising they have a choice and choosing celebrant led wedding ceremonies, it's wonderful to know that the wedding landscape is changing as each ceremony is about the couple and not just about a list of rules and tick boxes. Planning

Symbolic Make your ceremony even more meaningful with the addition of a symbolic ritual… UNITY CANDLE CEREMONY The candle unity ceremony involves the engaged couple each having their own taper candle and using them together to light the flame of a larger pillar candle. One of the most well-known ritual ceremonies, the candle unity ceremony symbolises the strength that the couple has together, as their two smaller candles burn brighter together and are strong enough to light the third candle. HANDFASTING RITUAL The handfasting ceremony – also known as the tying the knot ceremony, and where the phrase tying the knot originates – involves joining the hands of the marital couple and tying them together with ribbon, cord or even vines. You can make the handfasting even more personal by choosing the type of knot you want or by using significant material, such as the ribbon being saved from your mother’s bouquet when she got married. This ritual is usually incorporated at the end of the ceremony as the final vow to be bound together for the rest of your life. SAND CEREMONY A symbolic ritual, the sand ceremony is a lovely addition to the more traditional ceremony. During the sand ceremony, the couple each have a container of different coloured sand. One at

ceremonies

a time they pour the sand into a third container or vase to create layers, symbolising two becoming one. This is a great ritual to perform if you want to include other family members, be that children, parents or siblings, to unify the coming together of two families. Once poured, the sand will be almost impossible to seperate back into the individual colours, just as the couple and their families will become inseparable.

TREE PLANTING CEREMONY Before the ceremony, each of the couple will collect a container full of soil, from their own parents’ garden or a significant place to the individual. During the ceremony, the couple will plant a tree in a large pot, filling it with the soil from both of their significant places. The tree that is chosen could be a cutting from a family members’ garden or selected because of its symbolic meaning. Water it into the soil together and once you are home, re-plant it in the ground if you prefer. The tree symbolises your growing relationship and love, as well as reminding you that you have to keep nurturing it, as you will your relationship, to keep it alive and blossoming. RING-WARMING RITUAL The ring-warming ceremony can include a few family members or your entire guest list. Before the registrar or celebrant performs the ‘giving of the rings’ the rings are passed around the selected members of the congregation to hold for a few seconds while they each bless them and warm them with their love. When you put the rings on, you are doing so with the love and well wishes from your guests. WH

POPPING THE QUESTION Groom Max planned a romantic proposal for Ella on a private beach in Barbados! “A speed boat collected us to take us to our favourite restaurant, The Cliff, for lunch. The whole thing was perfect, we had lunch and Champagne and the rest of the holiday to celebrate” the bride smiles. WINTER WONDERLAND In contrast to their tropical engagement, Ella had always dreamed of a winter wedding when the day came. “Christmassy, candlelit and cosy – that’s what I’d always wanted, and luckily, Max agreed! We chose the 21st December and it was lovely because with Christmas coming, everyone was in the party spirit. The orangery at Deer Park, our venue, is beautiful and the whole house at Christmas is magical.”

“My dress didn’t stand out on the hanger, but as soon as it was on I knew it was the one”

PUTTING ON THE GLITZ Ella stunned in a highly embellished Jenny Packham design for her wedding dress. “I found it at Carina Baverstock Couture in Bradford on Avon. She’d asked me lots of questions about my style and plans and it was the last dress she’d pulled for me to try on. Getting married in December, the embellished style was just perfect.” WITHOUT A HITCH “I was surprised how relaxed I was on our wedding morning, I’d been anxious in the run up that I wouldn’t like something, or things might not go to plan. In hindsight I needn’t have worried! Putting my

dress and veil on made me feel like a real bride. I was so excited to get to the church and see Max, that even when the car keys were mislaid to get us there, it didn’t phase me! It’s a funny story now to look back on.” “Our ceremony was really special. The size of the church with 140 guests made it feel really significant, I just loved the atmosphere of having a church ceremony,” Ella smiles. The bride stepped down the aisle to Pachelbel’s Canon in D played by a string quartet. PARTY TIME Music continued to strike all the right notes at this couple’s wedding, with a pianist adding romance to the drinks reception, before singing waiters got everyone into the party spirit over dinner. A live band filled the dance floor, with the couple sharing their first dance to One Republic’s ‘Counting Stars’. WH

SETTING THE SCENE “I knew from the beginning the kind of venue I was looking for,” reveals the bride, “we wanted an old English stone manor, or castle. Being from Norway myself, we don’t have this style of buildings at home, but I’ve always loved them. We looked at a few venues before finding Dartington Hall, walking through the main archway took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes! I knew this was where I wanted to get married.” FINDING THE ONE For most brides, the search to find their dream dress means beginning with your local boutique. But for bride Siri, who calls a town in Norway’s Arctic circle home, it was never going to be quite so simple. “I decided to fly down to Oslo with my mum and sister to give us the best chances and visit a boutique that carried my favourite designers. Across the room, I saw another bride trying on a design, and I loved it! After what felt like an eternity it was my turn to try it on – the minute the zip was closed the emotion hit me. It was the dress of my dreams,” Siri gushes.

“An intimate wedding was perfect for us”

WARM WELCOME With the groom’s family living in the UK and the bride’s in Norway, their wedding day would be the first time many of them met. “We chose a venue in the south west of England to be close to my groom’s side of the family. Any concerns about language barriers melted away when our families and friends were together – everyone was chatting, dancing and having the most amazing time! It was a truly special moment for both of us,” the couple reminisce.

EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY This couple’s venue cooked up a storm, beginning with a three-course banquet with multiple options for each course. “We also added an ice cream cart loaded with toppings, as it was a summer wedding, and in the evening the venue prepared an enormous barbecue. I’d love to say it was out of this world (our guests certainly said so!) but we were so busy with guests, dancing and the photo booth we hardly ate a bite!” WORDS OF WISDOM “Professional toastmasters aren’t common in Norway, but I’m so glad we hired one,” Siri reveals. “He was amazing, greeting guests, getting them into the right place at the right time, placing buttonholes, teaching us to saber Champagne. He made everything run like clockwork!” WH

Ready, set, elope CITY OF LOVE After a chance meeting in a Los Angeles hotel, Ashley and Bilal never looked back. “From our very first date, we never left each other’s side,” Ashley smiles. “When Bilal proposed, it was magical. He surprised me at our friend’s house, I opened the door and the room was filled with roses and balloons, with our favourite song playing and a slideshow of photos. Our family and friends were waiting in the garden to celebrate, with a huge ‘will you marry me sign’ in lights with more roses and candles.” FINDING THE ONE It was at a Pronovias sample sale that bride Ashley found the dress of her dreams. “I didn’t have much time to find my dress, but I knew I wanted something fitted with a long train. I tried on several designs at the sale, but none of them were ‘the one’. I explained a bit more about what I was hoping for, and they pulled one from the back for me. I tried it on and fell in love, it was simple and dramatic at the same time.” Her groom looked dashing in a black tuxedo with peak lapel, cutaway collar and bowtie. Real Weddings “The vicar included Disney quotes in our ceremony!”

THE PROPOSAL Groom Sam pulled out all the stops when it came to proposing to Becky, popping the question in front of the Bellagio Fountain in Las Vegas on her 30th birthday! NO PLACE LIKE HOME “We’d originally planned our dream wedding at the Tivoli Hotel in Portugal, but due to the pandemic restrictions we had to cancel. I have two baby boys and wanted to share their surname, so Sam and I planned a smaller wedding here at home instead.” “We got married in the stunning St John’s the Evangelist church in our local village, then had an intimate reception at Sam’s parents house and garden. It was perfect with the boys being so young.” 40 guests joined the couple for their ceremony, with 20 more coming for the evening celebrations. A barbecue gave everyone plenty of fuel for dancing, with fish and chips keeping the party going late into the evening. AISLE STYLE Having spotted a sneak peek of her dress on Instagram, Becky visited the boutique with one style in mind. “I showed them the dress and they’d already pulled it and placed it on the rail for me to try!” Becky smiles. “I felt like a bride. It was the most amazing feeling and on our wedding day I just didn’t want to take it off again.”

On the day, bride Becky walked down the aisle to Beyonce’s rendition of the Lion King’s ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight’ – a sentimental song and film for their family. “One of our boys kept trying to blow out the artificial candle he was carrying as we walked down the aisle!” BLACK TIE The couple created an elegant and glamorous feel for their reception, with a black tie theme and accents of gold and pink. Bundles of whimsical pink and white peonies filled the space with romance and fragrance, echoed by peonies and roses spilling down their four-tier cake. “We danced the night away and on the final dance, Sam lifted me up as ‘I’ve Had the Time of My Life’ played!” WH

Chloe & Mike PHOTOGRAPHY BY

CHRIS ARMSTRONG

Cornwall Calls the Heart PAWFECT PROPOSAL It was on a romantic getaway to St Ives that Mike popped the question to Chloe, with the help of their four-legged sidekick. “Before we went out for a walk, Mike asked me to check our dog Paddy’s collar. He was wearing a new one and the tag said ‘will you marry me?’. It was the perfect start to our trip and so special to have Paddy involved,” Chloe gushes. IN THE NAME OF LOVE Chloe and Mike’s original wedding plans were brought to a surprising halt by the very first lockdown in March 2020. “We had just five days to go until our Somerset wedding with 120 guests, but realising this wouldn’t happen, we called the church and just 48 hours later were arriving there, just the two of us, to officially become husband and wife.” The couple then rescheduled their planned wedding celebration not once, but twice, with both being cancelled by the lockdown rules. “By this time, we’d fallen out of love with the wedding we’d originally planned, but we still wanted to celebrate with family and friends. That’s when the idea to head back to Cornwall came up, and we had the day of our dreams!”

W and H Promotion

Put A Little 'Ho Ho Ho' Into Your I Do’s! Festive Ideas For Your December Wedding I am sure a lot of couples aren’t in favour of having their wedding during the month of December. But, we think it is a wonderful idea, especially if the venue complements the season. When family and friends come to Blame Her Ranch (BHR) in New Mexico, everyone says, “It looks like Santa’s workshop in here.” Sure, we are extremely lucky that the main lodge is constructed with rustic logs and individual log cabins which is a good start towards this endeavor. But, both Steve and I have always been excited about the holiday’s and have a tendency to go overboard in dressing up the house with every Christmas decoration you can imagine. It all starts with our 14 foot Christmas tree with over 500 ornaments, over 10,000 outdoor lights, 10 foot wooden soldiers at the front door, 10 stockings hung over the massive fireplace, our stuffed bear dressed as Santa, the barn specifically decorated a-la the movie National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, plus a fully decorated front entrance that gets you in the spirit. It is unfortunate we only have still pictures to show you of the ranch in this article, but check out our Christmas video highlighting the entire ranch on YouTube (youtu.be/h2MErZs7glw). When visiting your venue be sure to ask what they will be doing to enhance the space in the festive period. There is no reason not to ask and remember all of these decorations add to the joy and excitement your guests will feel on your wedding day. And it might even save you money on expensive deocrations you would otherwise have to pay for at a different time of year. Beyond the venue decorations and the magical spirit it provides for your wedding, here are a few christmassy wedding ideas that can go even further:

1. Christmas pyjamas for the wedding party. 2. Festive themed invitations. 3. Tons and tons of evergreen garlands. 4. Festive signature cocktails. 5. Tree-shaped canapés. 6. Personalised tree ornaments for your guests. 7. Personalised Christmas stockings at everyone’s place setting. 8. Take-home egg nog, chilled and ready to drink in old fashion milk bottles. 9. Christmassy iced biscuits, monogramed with the couples initials. 10. Modify the lyrics to your favorite holiday song - make it about YOU! 11. Personalised holiday socks with the couples faces for the groomsmen. 12. Mistletoe kissing stations – don’t forget to use mistletoe during your wedding vows! It is not too late to begin planning, but the holiday’s are always a busy time, so book your venue now. If this does not make your wedding memorable and put you in the spirit of the holidays, then all we can say is, “Bah Humbug.” WH BLAME HER RANCH IS AN EXCLUSIVE WEDDING VENUE NEAR SANTE FE IN NEW MEXICO. Honeymooner's guide to Emily Olsen tells all, from where to eat, the places to stay and where you'll find the most memorable adventures…

N

New Brunswick

ew Brunswick is lovely.

The province is one of Canada’s lesser known, despite the fact it was once a favourite holiday destination for millionaires, railroad tycoons and Victorian aristocrats looking to ‘take the cure’. Smooth winding roads snake their way through wild, emerald forests, and views of meadows and stripy lawns are interrupted with rocky coastlines and beaches the colour of muscovado sugar. From spring to autumn, it’s a top down, hair in the wind kind of road trip, with the occasional need to slow to a halt and turn off the engine to watch in awe as a moose and its calf cross the road. There’s a perfect balance between the glorious simplicity of quaint guesthouses, farmers markets and gentle hiking tracks, which are coupled with an achingly cool music scene, craft breweries and distilleries, and a creative community that means you might be gliding through a Salvador Dali exhibition one day and watching ballet on the beach the next. So, perhaps New Brunswick is a little more than just lovely. In fact, National Parks of epic proportions and formidable seas,

126 DECEMBER

home to the world’s highest tides, make New Brunswick truly bucket-list worthy. And yet, this province has an air of secrecy to it, and those that visit have the inside track about one of Canada’s best kept secrets. There’s an undeniable romance to it. Days exploring small fishing towns, tangled forests and sweet little harbours are bookended with amber-lit evenings where expertly mixed martinis are followed by long dinners delicately whipped up by world class chefs. Faces are blushed and legs are unsteady from a day out at sea, and fresh air yawns intensify with each warming glass of red. Despite the delicious lethargy, excitement still fills the air as new routes are plotted, maps are eagerly marked with circles and red crosses, and once again travellers are on the eve of a new adventure. This is the place for honeymooners looking for something truly special, a little off-radar and perhaps with a pinch of bragging rights. However, you might even be tempted to keep it to yourself, and when met with the inevitable flurry of questions about your honeymoon, you might simply shrug, smile and say ‘New Brunswick? Oh… it was just lovely.”

Where to stay

W and H Promotion THE ALGONQUIN RESORT, ST. ANDREWS

This is undoubtedly New Brunswick’s most famous hotel. A provincial treasure, the mock-Tudor resort is found in St. Andrews – a delightful seaside town that was hugely popular in the early 1900s due to its claim that the waters were healing, and the air so pure even hay fever sufferers could find respite. Long, warmly lit corridors and gothic turrets add a fairytale feel and there’s a very convincing rumour that Stephen King drew his inspiration for The Shining from this historic property. The hotel offers classic romance, the type that’s necessary on every honeymoon: four poster beds, spa treatments, champagne chilling in ice buckets and crackling fireplaces for chilly evenings. Outside, honeymooners can enjoy long walks and even lobster boils on the hotel’s very own private beach.

THE SHADOW LAWN INN, ROTHESAY

Understated guesthouses are a New Brunswick speciality, and The Shadow Lawn Inn might just be one of the province’s most charming. Built in 1870, the Inn looks like a Doll’s House and yet there’s nothing small about the property. Sweeping staircases, lofty ceilings and huge bay windows gives the hotel an airy, contemporary feel. This Inn is a destination in itself for food loving honeymooners. Passionate chefs and kitchen gardens unite to create seasonal menus of New Brunswick Green and Purple Salads, Lavender Honey Chicken and Dark Chocolate Sweet Potato Brownies.

CIELO GLAMPING MARITIME, HAUT- SHIPPAGAN

Sleeping under the stars amid dense magical forests might just be the most romantic way to celebrate your honeymoon. Perched on an oyster bay, these glamping domes offer a super chic way to experience the New Brunswick wilderness. Private patios with glorious outside showers, hammocks on the water’s edge and even a skylight in the dome so you can watch the stars – camping has never been so stylish. For the more intrepid couples there’s even the chance to go on the SUP and Shuck adventure where you can harvest your very own dinner.

HERITAGE CABINS, MOUNT CARLETON PROVINCIAL PARK

Home to the highest peak in the Maritimes, this provincial park offers pristine lakes, fragrant forests and, for those looking for something a little more off radar, blissful silence. The cabins are a perfect segue into experiencing the enchanting wilderness of New Brunswick and honeymooners can expect gentle hiking routes, peaceful lakes and the chance to unwind and switch off amongst ten million beautiful trees. For the night owls, the provincial park is also a Dark Sky Preserve (named by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada) so it’s the perfect opportunity for some magical moon and starlight bathing. An added bonus? Spotty cell service means that you can truly get away from it all.

What to do

FUNDY NATIONAL PARK, BAY OF FUNDY

New Brunswick’s most famous national park, Fundy, teeters on the edge of the gigantic Fundy Bay – home to the world’s highest tides and 12 species of whales. This is Canadian adventure at its most exciting. Honeymooners can hike through forests and past waterfalls, kayak around centuries-old rock formations, and even walk on the ocean floor when the tide is out. A new road, that links the Park to the Fundy Trail Parkway, opened in September 2021, and this means the far reaches of the national park are even more accessible for an incredible road trip experience.

WHALE WATCHING, ST ANDREWS

The Bay of Fundy is the habitat of choice for some of the world’s rarest whales, including the endangered North Atlantic Right Whale. Deep waters and high tides bring plankton, krill and fish and the sheltered bay allows for the safest place for whales to feed, give birth and raise their calves. St. Andrews offers the most whale watching operators in one location and is a must-do when visiting this glorious seaside town. Sailboats, catamarans, and even speedy zodiacs can take whale watchers across the bay for an almost guaranteed wildlife spotting experience. As well as whales, expect to see spritely porpoises, lazy seals and soaring seabirds. A trip that will stay in your memory forever.

128 DECEMBER

BALLET BY THE OCEAN, GRAND DIGUE

Even those that don’t love ballet will find it hard not to love this incredibly surreal experience. Over two hours, guests will experience three original dances that are each paired with a local tasting menu prepared by some of the province’s most renowned chefs. Against a backdrop of New Brunswick’s wild seas of the Northumberland Strait, this breath-taking performance is a real showstopper for a honeymoon that combines New Brunswick’s epic wilderness with a truly special creative community.

BEAVERBROOK ART GALLERY, FREDERICTON

New Brunswick isn’t just about the great outdoors. The music and art scenes are some of Canada’s best. Pop galleries and exhibitions across the province means there’s always something to do. Art lovers should include Fredericton in their itinerary. The provincial capital is a mishmash of picture-perfect townhouses and farmers markets with trendy boutiques, cocktail bars and galleries. The Beaverbrook is the most famous and houses over 3,000 pieces by internationally renowned artists, including Dali, Krieghoff, Riopelle, Monkman, Bobak, Freud and Turner. This is also the location in New Brunswick to truly understand appreciate the local Acadian, Maliseet, and Mi’kmaq artists. Be sure to check out the Grandfather Akwiten Canoe - the oldest surviving birchbark canoe in the world.

KELLY’S BAKE SHOP, ALMA

W and H Promotion

This might just be the cutest little road trip pitstop. Renowned across the whole of Canada, Kelly’s is a family business that now has an almost cult following. Make sure to include this on your travels as one or two (or three – we won’t judge) famous sticky buns is the perfect mid-adventure sustenance (she has a record for selling almost 4,400 in one day). While it’s well worth the stop for these gooey cinnamon buns, the bakery also sells cookies, muffins and some delicious savoury snacks too.

SAINT JOHN CITY MARKET, SAINT JOHN

This is the perfect place to stop for both a delicious breakfast and to pick up some souvenirs. As the oldest continuing farmers’ market in Canada and a National Historic Site, it’s a spot which welcomes both locals and tourists alike. The market houses locally roasted coffee shops, farmers and vegetable producers, bakeries, delis and a fishmonger. You can absolutely try before you buy as samples circulate the market, and there’s even a tasting room to stop and taste some of the locally brewed and distilled beers and spirits. For a real taste of New Brunswick, be sure to check out Slocum & Ferris to try their local dulse – a seaweed delicacy freshly picked on the Bay of Fundy Island of Grand Manan.

THE ROSSMOUNT INN, CHAMCOOK

A visit to the St. Andrews area is not complete without dinner at the Rossmount Inn. This wonderful country inn, boasts some of the best food in the province, prepared by owner and Head Chef Chris Aerni. He, and his wife Graziella, chose to come to St. Andrews due to the incredible bounty of fresh seasonal produce, local seafood and small farming businesses, and now the spot is one the favourites for both locals and visiting guests. The restaurant even has an on-site heritage garden and the team forages in the local woodlands to source the freshest and most beautiful ingredients for their seasonal menu.

SAVOUR THE SEA CAVES EXPERIENCE, ST. MARTIN’S

Red Rock Adventures takes guests at high tide to explore the St. Martin’s Sea Caves by kayak. A magical day exploring these incredible geological formations is the perfect pre-dinner activity to work up an appetite as Red Rock Adventures also offers a Savour the Sea experience. Kayakers then come back at low tide to walk across the ocean floor and into the one of the caves that they paddled into earlier that day. Prepared right on the ocean floor, this incredible five course, locally sourced meal is paired with local beverages as well as some spellbinding storytelling.

T

Traditions

he United States, like so many countries, is blessed to have a rich heritage of indigenous people. In fact, Native American groups have inhabited the areas around Blame Her Ranch (BHR) and throughout New Mexico for thousands of years — many centuries before Europeans even reached the Americas. There are over 23 Indian tribes located in New Mexico including Pueblos, Apache and the Navajo Nation. Each tribe is a nation onto itself with rich ways of life, culture and traditions. This is particularly interesting to our guests for those who are looking to inject some Native American Wedding activities and traditions into their weekend at BHR. These meaningful traditions are a great way to pay homage to our heritage even if the ceremony is traditional in nature. Here are just a few ideas we have suggested to couples both with and without a Native American background, but are perfect based on our roots here in New Mexico. SACRED FEATHERS During a traditional Native American Wedding, several tribes have the bride and groom each hold feathers in their left hand while reciting their wedding vows to each other. Feathers are generally considered to represent a connection with the great spirit among many Native American tribes. VASE RITUAL Both the Cherokee and Pueblo people celebrate a vase ritual as part of their ceremonies. The wedding vases are identifiable by two spouts they have that are joined together by a handle. The two spouts represent the individual lives of each to-be-wed and signifies the couple coming together in their new life. On the wedding day the vase is filled with holy water and then presented to the bride to drink from. After both taking a sip, the two are bonded together in marriage. The wedding vase is a cherished possession. In fact, if one spouse passes away before the other, traditionally the vase

Marry in New Mexico and be inspired by ancient traditions…

maybe gifted to another married couple as a way of celebrating the happy marriage the couple had while offering well-wishes to the new couple. BLANKET CEREMONY The blanket ceremony is a common practice during Cherokee weddings. During this ceremony, the mothers of the couple will bring blue blankets and drape them over their children’s shoulders. The blue blankets symbolise the sorrow of their lives prior to their union in marriage. Later in the ceremony, the blue blankets are removed and replaced with a large white blanket over the shoulders of the couple symbolising a covering over their weaknesses and sorrow. The couple can now enter their new life of marriage joined with peace and fulfillment. FOOD AS A SYMBOL OF PROVISION Food is a central part of the ceremonies of many Native American tribes. The inclusion of food takes many different forms from tribe to tribe, the symbolism of provision generally remains consistent across the board. The Navajo people include mashed cornmeal in their ceremonies, while the Cochise Nation eat both corn and venison during their blanket ceremony. TIPI WEDDING NIGHT The couple’s wedding night is very private and unique for each couple. BHR has constructed an authentic Native American tipi that the couple can escape to after the guests are well on their way. Furnished with a Native American queen size bed, the couple will have a memorable evening under the stars to celebrate the beginning of their new life. These traditions are a meaningful way couples at BHR can pay homage to the tribes of the southwest and will leave your guests with a memory that is rarely seen in your classic ceremony setting. WH

2022 FiorellaWedding gives us the scoop on the wedding trends we are sure to see next year… ELOPEMENT AND INTIMATE WEDDINGS After the global pandemic, intimate and elopement weddings are trending for 2022. The weddings of next season will be intimate, with a small guests list, or, in many cases, elopements. Although the guest list is pared back, the styling will be full of creativity and fun. Couples will make the most of the place they are getting married in with their decor and decisions will be based on their guests having the best time, too. A desire for positivity and energy will be reflected in the colour palette, with pale blue, pinks, sage green and lemon yellow creating a fresh, calm and relaxed theme. Alternatively, pops of ochre, mustard, orange and yellow add warmth to the overall look. SUSTAINABLE WEDDINGS We are living in the decade of 'green weddings', with couples seeking sustainable ways to organise their day without sacrificing the details. 2022 will feature retro and recycled elements and sustainable styling, such as potted plants instead of cut flowers. The wedding menu will boast local and organic offerings with minimum wastage. Ceremonies will be celebrated mainly between the afternoon and the evening, with atmospheric candles and lighting designs creating a fairytale feel – even better if the setup is in a venue surrounded by nature with waterfalls and ponds.

Trends

WILDFLOWERS Floral decorations, including bouquets and table arrangements, will have a light and informal look to them. Behind a seemingly wild appearance, however, there is attention to detail, from the choice of blooms to the installation. Among the most requested elements; hanging floral arrangements. Above the table and in feature corners, these natural compositions will make everything more magical. Florals even feature in the presentation of the food, with the edible variety taking centrestage on plates. The 2022 wedding stationery trend will be a focus on floral motifs designed on textured paper, parchment or transparent materials. Not forgetting personalised wax seals that customises each invitation or even used as part of the design on the table placeholder. MODERN DRESSES Next season's wedding dress collections speak of renewal and rebirth in a post-pandemic world, combining love, hope and creativity. The goal is to make every bride happy and fall in love with their perfect gown. The stand-out style is a princess dress, but with a more modern design. You'll see super romantic creations, where ruffles and tulles create volume and movement. A philosophy that seems to be trending throughout the bridal world and bridal fashion designers, in particular, is 'love conquers all', and after a period without weddings, we expect to see a year chocka block full of fabulous celebrations in 2022. From countryside

to coast

WHERE DID YOU HONEYMOON? Our favourite part of a holiday is getting to explore new places, so we didn’t want our honeymoon to be any different. We decided to chase the sun on a southwest 10-day English road trip starting in the Cotswolds then onto Bath, Cornwall, Somerset and ending in Bristol. WHERE DID YOU STAY? We stayed in 5 different hotels during our trip. Each one reflected the area that it was in, from the Tudor style Fleece Inn in Cirencester and the stylish Bathen Boutique to the laid-back grounds of The Plume of Feathers in Mitchell, Cornwall. Comfort was key to us as we knew we would spend more time relaxing than on a normal holiday, so we chose hotel rooms with lots of space and the all-important roll top bath!

WHAT DID YOU GET UP TO? We had many romantic dinners and drinks in atmospheric bars and enjoyed walking old streets while browsing boutique shops. The Cotswolds, Bath and Cornwall have an abundance of independent stores with unique homewares and gifts. We visited the Roman Baths, drove around the south coast of Cornwall stopping at as many towns as we could before a stop at the Japanese Garden and a zip wire experience across the Eden Project. We also took a safari drive around Longleat. One of our favourite experiences was coasteering in Newquay, where, with the help of an instructor, we jumped off cliffs and into the water, which was a lot scarier than I thought it would be! It was great to do something out of our comfort zone, it made the trip even more memorable. WHAT DID YOU EAT? My husband wanted it to be a trip dedicated

Amelia and Tom travelled across the southwest of England to uncover some of its best-kept secrets...

to trying new things, so we chose food that he wouldn’t usually have. We had a champagne afternoon tea at the Pump House in Bath while listening to a string quartetand, enjoyed lots of seafood at places such as Portofino Oyster Bar and Mackerel Sky Seafood Bar, where we experienced real Cornish dishes. A lot of our meals were tapas-style sharing dishes to make it even more romantic and so that we could try different dishes. Some of our favourites were a candle-lit French-Italian combo at Comptoir+Cusine and a bustling atmosphere with Indian street food at Dhamaka in Bristol. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS LOCATION FOR YOUR HONEYMOON? When our plans to Bali fell through due to Covid-19, we decided to stay in the UK to be safe. We are from Yorkshire, so we chose the south of England for a change of scenery and a hope for good weather. We were sad that we weren’t going abroad for what was supposed to be the best holiday of our lives. However, our trip didn’t disappoint, and we are so glad we got to experience our beautiful country this way. The Cotswold green countryside and Cornwall’s turquoise blue waters and sandy beaches were exactly what we needed. A FEW SPECIAL MOMENTS OF THE TRIP? The Thermae Bath Spa in Bath is a special memory for us. We really needed to relax after the stress of the wedding and a busy few days at the beginning of our honeymoon. We arrived at around 6:30pm so that we could enjoy the spa’s rooftop pool and watch the sunset – it was so romantic! We ran through the rain in Frome, finding a quiet cocktail bar where we kept dry, sharing food and laughter and proving that the great British weather doesn’t have to get you down. WH
