Editor-in-Chief’s Letter In association with The Omnia Zermatt Dear couples, Summer is just around the corner and so are weddings! I’m looking forward to seeing newlyweds celebrating, surrounded by family and friends - it’s been long overdue. With this in mind, we bring you an issue filled with ideas and advice to make the most of your special day. In our Inspired pages, we celebrate talented and stylish UK bridal designers. To complete your look, we have many options we know you’ll love; jewellery, shoes and dresses galore. We have a beautiful selection of summer wedding ideas too, from flowers, and cakes to tablespaces and accessories, you’ll definitely be spoilt for choice. Have a look through our gorgeous styled shoots too, be inspired by the beautiful elopement amidst the romantic vineyards of Brickhouse, in Devon (pg. 35). Breathe in the new season with refreshing fashions from world-renown brands. Whether you’re planning a beach wedding or a palace soiree, you’ll find styles that suit your taste and budget. To get the exclusive on the latest bridal trends, we sat down with the American bridal designer Alexandra Grecco. Don’t miss the full interview starting on page 60, where she shares her road to success and takes us through some of the collections that have made history. Personally...I’m in love with the Botanica Collection, inspired by flowers and their resilience. This campaign brings joy and hope during these difficult times. Across our Destination pages, you’ll find some of my top romantic escapes, from the Caribbean shores of Antigua to the majestic sceneries of Cumbria. We’ve gone out of our way to share the best locations for outdoor weddings; some have mesmerising surroundings to accompany them and others have top-notch service, which you won’t be able to turn down. We have a detailed interview with one of the most elite venues in Cyprus, The Cupule, and they’re waiting for couples for a ‘one-of-a-kind’ wedding.

ON THE COVER

As for planning - we got you covered! Even if 2021 weddings will look a little different, you’ll still need all the essentials to make your big day stand out. Floral designers, planners and a detailed guide to UK weddings await you. And if you still haven’t found what you’re looking for, visit weddingsandhoneymoonsmagazine.com for more. Ciao!

5 Top Tips for a perfect summertime wedding Our Special Features Editor Linda Blamer shares 5 suggestions on how to have the summer wedding of your dreams this year!

S

ummer 2021 is going to be “hot” both figuratively and literally. With Covid restrictions beginning to lighten up and with a backlog of weddings, this summer looks to be both full of activities and non-stop weddings. That is certainly the case at Blame Her Ranch.

BIO Linda is the owner of Blame Her Ranch which was built under her direction and design in 2007. In 2017, Linda and her husband Steve began marketing the ranch as an independent Airbnb-like location. After her daughter’s wedding, many vendors approached the Blamer’s to host weddings at their ranch based on its beauty, uniqueness, and location. And, that’s how it all started...

It is also fair to say, that guests will expect a memorable event having been stuck in their homes for the past year. So, put on your party shoes and creative bonnet and let’s plan the perfect summertime wedding by using these 5 helpful suggestions:

1 2 3 20

MAY

LOCATION

It all starts with the venue, so make sure the location for your special day has a great summer climate and atmosphere. There is numerous information on the web that will help you zero-in on the country and city that matches your desired climate and scenery. A little extra work beforehand truly pays off. That is why we like Santa Fe so much because of the 300 days of sunshine, low humidity, and temperatures rarely above 90 degrees.

4

WEATHER

Okay, it’s a little boring but it’s something for you to keep in mind and plan for, especially if your event is outdoors. Here at our ranch, we have a built-in Plan B. If there’s bad weather, our couples can easily shift from outdoors to our Cowboy Chic Barn. Sit down with your wedding planner or event coordinator and make plans in case of inclement weather. Get ahead of it so you don’t have to worry on the day of your event.

SUMMER FOOD

Since it is going to be warmer, play into that with signature cocktails, popsicle stands, and other things that will quench the thirst. Maybe even an ice cream wedding cake and sweet cold treats during the reception. In other words, refreshing foods to match the summertime mood.

5

USE THE HEAT TO YOUR ADVANTAGE

No matter where your wedding is, battling the heat will be something you will need to deal with. Here are some fun ideas to tackle the heat. Put together welcome bags with bottled water, sweet and savoury snacks, sunscreen and yes, even bug repellent. Another cute idea is to offer men and women Chic Fedora hats to help with extra sun protection, but with a flair (and what a great keepsake). Finally, at night, with the approval of your event location, fireworks are a great choice for the grand finale.

POOL POSSIBILITIES

If your location, like here at Blame Her Ranch, is lucky enough to have a swimming pool, take full advantage of it because nothing says summer more than a great pool! But, make it special. Instead of having a traditional welcome or rehearsal dinner, why not make it a pool party with food and activities. Decorate with floating flowers to take it to the next level, use colourful LED lights floating in the pool to keep the party going well past sunset, create custom beach towels, have “beach boy-like” music or hire a band. Food-wise, keep it light with dedicated estival foods like vodka watermelon balls, margarita snow cones, etc. The whole idea here is to break the norms and make your event a truly memorable wedding.

COVID-19

Weddings Due to the current lockdown across the UK, weddings, civil partnerships and events are restricted. However, from the latest government announcements, couples will be able to have restriction-free weddings from the 21st of June.

As it currently stands, the government guidelines for weddings are different throughout the UK.

UNITED KINGDOM RULES & RESTRICTIONS

COVID-19

ENGLAND From the 12th of April to the 17th of May only 15 people can attend weddings in approved venues. From the 17th of May, weddings can take place with up to 30 people.

WALES Weddings can take place only in approved venues. The maximum number of attendees is regulated by the venue’s capacity. There must be social distancing between households and social bubbles.

HOW WE DID IT!

KAYLYN & TONY’S STORY HOW LONG HAVE YOU KNOWN EACH OTHER?

NORTHERN IRELAND Up to 25 people

can attend wedding ceremonies in Northern Ireland. Although, with 15 people or more a risk assessment is required. Face masks must be worn at all time.

SCOTLAND Until April the 26th only 5 people are allowed at weddings, including the couple, witnesses and officiant. If an interpreter is needed, then six people may attend the wedding. gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-guidancefor-small-marriages-and-civil-partnerships

WHAT WILL WEDDINGS LOOK LIKE?

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THESE LOCATIONS?

We’re both from St. Petersburg, Florida and our families live 5 minutes from each other. We went to high school together and even though we were in different social groups, we were always aware of each other. It was not until after undergrad that our romance started.

We married in the Church and reception venue that my parents were married in. They just celebrated their 30th anniversary and we couldn’t think of a better place to have our wedding. It’s also the Church that Tony grew up going to and I was baptized there.

WHAT WAS THE PAST YEAR LIKE FOR YOU?

HOW WAS GETTING MARRIED IN 2020?

I’m a healthcare worker in New York and I worked tirelessly on the frontlines in Mt Sinai’s COVID Intensive Care Unit. During the pandemic, Tony launched his company, Buzr (getbuzr.com) which has since grown to 15 employees with offices & a lab on Roosevelt Island.

WHERE DID YOU HAVE YOUR WEDDING?

We got married in St. Raphael’s Church and we celebrated at the St. Petersburg Woman’s Club in Snell Isle.

2020 was a difficult year. I experienced the sadness and difficulty of it first hand as a frontline worker. Tony was always there for me. His support and care got me through this pandemic. We knew that we wanted to finally celebrate our love, of course, with all the precautions. We planned a small, intimate wedding with our families and closest friends. It turned out to be a wonderful day and it was just what we needed at the time.

Good news! The country is gradually reopening and the plan is to celebrate restriction-free weddings by the 21st of June. And how will weddings look like? For sure, the majority of couples will opt for outdoor ceremonies and receptions. Try opting for weekdays; venues will have more availability and costs might be lower. Many will prefer small gatherings. You

can always have several events with your different social bubbles if you’re worried about having a big celebration that people might not attend. Soon to be married couples will start to have options again and weddings, as we know them, should start to go ahead once more. Always make sure to check and follow the latest government guidelines

THE COUPLE

Jessie & Qiyuan

got married in the gorgeous city of San Francisco

A

fter college, we both moved to San Francisco for work and this is where we first met. It was the perfect destination for our wedding, because it’s where everything first started. When choosing venues, we immediately decided to go with the Legion of Honor because this place is so special to us. Legion of Honor is one of the first places we went to as a couple, and both of us love the art and architecture of the museum. Our theme was vintage so the venue was very fitting for this. The view of the Golden Bridge from the wedding lawn was absolutely beautiful, and the gorgeous Rodin sculptures in the reception room really brought everything together. Since our wedding was in the fall, we chose an autumn-inspired colour palette and art inspired by the museum’s art exhibitions e.g., Monet Rubens and Fridd. We believe all weddings are ‘once in a lifetime’ so we wanted to make ours as special as possible. A lot of the costs were inevitable i.e., venue, florist and catering. We were able to keep costs down with things like stationery, photos, and guest gifts. However, when our overall costs exceeded our budget, we would discuss it and decide how much to spend. Many of our guests were local, but for our family members who visited from China, we rented a large Airbnb house in the south bay for them. We also helped our out-of-town guests to book hotels in the area. My wedding dress was from a local bridal shop, Bo Lee Bridal Couture. I didn’t have a preference before shopping. Bo (owner of the shop) was very nice and patient. She helped me try different wedding gowns and recommended dresses that would fit my silhouette. My wedding dress had a very special design -- with both romantic lace and a sexy V-neck. Qi’s tux was from BlackTux, he was able to bring his groomsmen altogether to find the perfect look for the wedding. Advice that I would give to couples planning their wedding, would be to plan ahead. Also, be patient with each other, the wedding is for both of you.

THE COUPLE

Caysie and Bobby

exchanged vows in the natural beauty of San Jose del Cabo We were thrilled to have our wedding in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico! Bobby and I have family in both California and Kansas. We wanted to pick a neutral location and thought it would be a great opportunity to visit our favourite city with all of our closest friends and family! It was super easy to find our venue. Lynda, my stepmom has been visiting Flora Farms for years. She took Bobby, my dad and me for dinner there in January 2019 – we immediately fell in love with the vibe, the people, and the food. We knew we wanted to get married there one day. This was also a special trip because it is when Bobby asked my dad for his blessing! Bobby got his tuxedo from an online website called Black Lapel. He was able to fully customize his tux, which is perfect because he is 6ft 9in and it is hard for him to find items in store. I got my dress from a cute bridal boutique in Kansas City named Fabulous Frocks. I used to walk past the store daily with my dog and always envisioned getting my dress there. I picked a super simple Katie May dress off the rack. Once our budget was established, our wedding planner Bonnie kept everything super organized. Our line of communication with her and her team was so fluid and open, we were never worried about extra charges or surprise bills. For decoration, we wanted to keep the space minimal and neutral. This allowed the lush landscape and barn at Flora Farms to shine. We told Bonnie our vision and she truly brought it to life. She added furniture items, table settings and lights that enhanced the space without overpowering it. Flora Farms is also home to a few lucky dogs that randomly roam around the space saying hello. Bobby and I are dog lovers, so this was a very special surprise. My advice to other couples would be to invest in a wedding planner from the very beginning! It is worth every single penny. It would have been nearly impossible for us to find the right vendors without one!

THE COUPLE

May & Andrew

eloped to the bustling city of Hoi An, in Vietnam...

W

e love to travel and explore the world together, and because of my Vietnamese origins, we wanted to elope to Vietnam and celebrate our love there. We picked different locations around Hoi An for our wedding day, each with a unique style. After a private ceremony on a boat, we headed to 200 Years in Hoi An for a break and to escape the heat. Friends recommended it and we thought it was perfect due to its link to Hollywood. We fell in love with the character of the place, steeped in history. For our restaurant, we wanted a riverfront location, away from the hustle and bustle, with tropical vegetation and also a private area for us to relax in with a cigar, so we picked Thirty Seven. We wanted our big day to be very minimalistic and we didn’t think the locations we selected needed any extra decorations-we definitely were looking for a raw aesthetic. Our colour palette was inspired by Hoi An’s famous okra walls, and we opted for a blue suit and a white dress to compliment this. Indeed, we were inspired by our own style, which is understated but elegant, and by the locations we visited. We kept things very “basic” and focused on what was important to us: atmosphere, our passion for one another, an experience to remember, suggestive locations and, most importantly, photography. I was very fortunate to have Baina Uchaeva as my makeup artist for the day, she created a perfect look that reflected wonderfully through the photos. Baina was recommended to us by a friend and after checking out her IG, we fell in love with her work. We didn’t have guests at our wedding. We will be doing a big wedding later on, but we wanted a very intimate micro wedding style of elopement. Of course, in planning this day, the distance was a challenge. Although, it was also a great opportunity to take some time from our busy lives to travel and visit the area, and really get in touch with the Vietnamese culture.

THE COUPLE

Roshni & Liam

tied the knot in a romantic intimate ceremony

W

e both live London but chose my hometown in Leicester to host our wedding. Winstanley House was the first and only venue we visited, and it was perfect for us. It was private, modern, luxurious and surrounded by lush greenery. The venue was easy to reach and included a hotel where our guests were able to stay. They were also able to cater to our Indian & Caribbean fusion cuisine and included this in our package, which was super helpful. Finding somewhere to cater to our exact menu would have been either extremely rare or super expensive! The rarity and richness of a Caribbean & Indian fusion wedding was something very special, and we ensured to keep as many of these elements in as possible. We had Caribbean canapes, followed by a three-course Indian feast, against a classic R&B, soul and lover’s rock playlist. We wanted our décor to be clean, simple and elegant but with elements that displayed romance & royalty. This was amplified through minimalistic invites and stationery which I designed myself. Deep emerald green was our key colour, and was incorporated through foliage, Liam’s jacket, the bridesmaids’ dresses, and my Indian jewellery. Winstanley House’s exposed red brick, the red dahlias and white roses featured in my bouquet and centrepieces, also helped to create the classic look we wanted. Given the current climate, we did face quite a few hiccups during the planning process. When it came to choosing my bridal look, after many disappointing shopping trips, I decided to get a bespoke Indian outfit made. Originally, my mum was meant to bring back the outfit from her trip to India. But when the pandemic hit, India was in lockdown & my outfit was on hold for months. Luckily, my amazing mum communicated the whole process on my behalf from start to finish via WhatsApp and the outfit arrived a week before at her house. We also went from planning a 200-person wedding to 15 the week before due to COVID-19 guidelines. This was initially quite stressful, but it ended up being the most perfect and intimate wedding with our immediate family. It was unfortunate that we couldn’t have everyone we loved with us, but we were so grateful that we were still able to create our dream day.

FASHION

How did you become a bridal designer? What is the history behind Alexandra Grecco?

I studied fashion design at FIT and while I was a student, I interned for a ready-to-wear designer who was running a small label. She offered me an intimate look at what it meant to start a business and I discovered I was inspired to do the same for myself. I began in RTW but found myself drawn to bridal. It felt like a natural fit, as I loved working with more luxurious fabrics and intricate embroideries. Bridal is very special as each garment is made to order; I appreciate the slower process, ensuring that each dress is perfectly made for its bride. I officially transitioned to bridal in late 2014 following my own wedding.

Tell us about your very first collection, what was the experience like for you?

Producing the first collection was so exciting but also a little scary as bridal samples are so much more expensive than womenswear pieces. I was new to bridal and didn’t have any contacts in the industry. I trusted my gut, researched my favorite stores and bridal publications, and began doing outreach myself. Fortunately, the line was well received!

How would you describe the Alexandra Grecco bride?

The Alexandra Grecco bride appreciates understated elegance and high-quality fabrications. She is confident and wants to feel like herself on her wedding day. As I design, I take a modern approach to bridal by offering clean, easy silhouettes for the less-traditional bride.

What was the inspiration behind the Botanica Collection?

As I was designing Botanica, I was incredibly inspired by flowers and their resilience. Months into the pandemic, my husband and I were worn out from taking care of our kids at home while managing our careers, and were really trying our best to be present and joyful with them (as challenging as it was at times!) Flowers are joyful and resilient; two themes I hope to convey with this collection.

What statement details did you seek to showcase in this collection?

The Botanica pieces are really bright, like a breath of fresh air. The shimmering hand-embroidered details are meant to catch the light and illuminate the bride.

How do you think bridalwear has changed over the years, and what are your favourite trends?

I think that bridalwear has become less traditional, with brides seeking pieces that reflect their personal style. I am excited by this trend. Brides can present an authentic version of themselves on their wedding day.

Who would you describe as your fashion heroes? My grandmother has always served as an inspiration. She dresses for herself and has a love for exceptional, quality pieces. Her outfit choices are always thoughtful and completely true to her own personal sense of style.

What advice would you give to a bride-to-be who is about to pick out their wedding dress?

Limit the number of guests who come with you to your bridal appointments or go by yourself. One or two close friends is more than enough; too many opinions from others can be distracting. Ultimately, the process is about what piece you love and are drawn to.

What has been your favourite moment as a bridal designer?

It is such a treat being able to travel for trunk shows and meet brides in person as they are selecting their dress. I love being able to meet their families and share in such an intimate moment. It truly is a privilege to make dresses for our beautiful brides and then to see the happy wedding photos many months later.

What advice would you give to a younger designer starting out in the industry? Stay true to yourself and your vision.

What does the future hold for Alexandra Grecco?

We know that the future is really bright for Alexandra Grecco. We have built such a beautiful community of brides. It is such a pleasure and an honor to be able to dress so many fantastic women on their wedding days. We hope to continue expanding our reach and our product selection. We have a really amazing new collection coming out in April and from there, the possibilities are endless. Stay tuned! W E D D I N G S A N D H O N E Y M O O N S M A G A Z I N E .C O M

Destinations ANTIGUA

Antigua is one of the two islands that make up the eastern Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda. This vibrant island nation was once a British colony, and its profound history has shaped the country that it is today. For example, you’ll notice the official English language, their passion for cricket, the abundance of quaint colonial architecture, and the old battle forts and dockyards where the Royal Navy made their centre of operations in the 18th century. But if being out at sea is your favourite place to be, sailors of all levels are drawn to Antigua for its favourable trade winds, clear waters, safe anchorages and busy calendar of regatta events. Sailing enthusiasts travel all around the world to attend competitions and soak up the social atmosphere all day and night at the annual Sailing Week. Typically, Antigua’s peak season is between mid-December and mid-April, as the warm climate and bright sunshine make it a captivating winter escape for American and European travellers. It’s a soulful Caribbean destination where world-class sugarwhite beaches combine with luxury hospitality. No wonder the jet-set elite like Richard Branson and Oprah Winfrey have made holiday homes here. Read on to discover Antigua’s most coveted hotels, restaurants and unmissable activities.

TOP THREE PLACES TO VISIT

The capital city of St John’s pulses with a lively modern Caribbean spirit, yet it also radiates with an old-world charm. Candy coloured houses line up across the waterfront and cruise ships glide into the port to drop visitors near the bustling duty-free shops in Heritage Quay. Beyond the busy marina, there are some cultural must-sees including the impressive baroque-style St John’s Cathedral and

the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda. English Harbour in the south of the island is another stunning natural marina, and its British place name is reminiscent of the site where Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson’s Royal Navy established their base. Colourful clusters of coral are also positioned just offshore, making it the ideal spot for snorkelling and diving. Known for its ritzy yacht scene, pretty Georgian buildings and vibrant parties up on fort vestiges at Shirley’s Heights, it’s an enchanting place to enjoy on honeymoon. On the eastern side of the island, the shallow waters at ‘StingRay City’ are a visitor highlight. Located just five minutes from the coast by speedboat, couples can stand, swim or snorkel alongside hundreds of playful Southern stingrays in their natural habitat. If you’re lucky, you might be able to feed or hold one with the help of an instructor. It’s a memorable experience only found in a handful of places around the world. The bath warm waters, gentle rays and vibrant corals will make you want to stay for hours.

HONEYMOON ACTIVITY GUIDE

Antigua is world-renowned for its unbeatable beaches, thick rainforest canopies and vibrant community spirit. Whilst the island is small, it packs a punch, and you’ll be left feeling reenergised by the soulful energy of the Caribbean lifestyle. Here’s our itinerary go-to’s.

CULTURAL PURSUITS

Housed in the oldest building in Antigua, The Museum of Antigua and Barbuda is a fountain of education for those who are curious about the island’s past. Across its floors, visitors can learn about the geological formation of the islands, traditional cultural practices and the Amerindian people who inhabited the country before European settlement. Scattered over the island, you can also visit the remaining disused sugar plantations like Betty’s Hope. They’re a profound reminder of the colonial powers that once dominated this now flourishing independent nation. Nelson’s Dockyard in English Harbour is another area of maritime significance. Now accoladed with World Heritage status, this large sheltered marina was strategically used by the British Royal Navy in the Georgian era to protect their ships from hurricanes and keep a close eye on French naval activity. Today, visitors can book a private tour with a heritage expert around the Dockyard Museum that’s located in the former Admiral’s House. To get involved in the local culture of today, a popular gathering called ‘Seafood Fridays’ takes place in Nelson’s Dockyard. Every week at 6pm, locals and visitors enjoy delicious fresh fish and music outside the Copper & Lumber Store, it’s a joyful evening that reflects the convivial spirit of Caribbean life. If sunset cocktails and live music is your thing, head to Shirley Heights lookout point every Sunday for the longest standing BBQ party in the Caribbean. The echo of steel-pan drums creates the soundtrack to sundown, as the evening lights in English and Falmouth Harbour begin to twinkle on the horizon.

MAY

NATURAL NIRVANA

Nature is omnipresent on the island of Antigua, and couples love getting immersed in the untouched tropical surroundings. In the east of the island near the village of Willikies, Devil’s Bridge has become a popular attraction. The product of coastal erosion, this rugged limestone bridge has been carved into the rock with numerous blowholes. It’s an incredible sight, as the powerful geysers shoot high up into the air, surrounded by the vast Atlantic Ocean horizon. To the south of the island, in the iconic Fig Tree Drive, guests can experience the enrapturing sights and sounds of the Antiguan rainforest. In the heart of the forest, there are 12 exciting zip wires and a fun-filled high ropes adventure course where you can scale the canopy, take the ‘Leap of Faith’ and sit in the treehouses to take it all in from a bird’s eye view. Of course, no trip to the island would be complete without spending time on Antigua’s stunning array of world-class beaches and coves, caressed by gentle azure waters. Along the Northwest coast, Fort James is a popular sandy beach close to the city centre and the nearby Dickenson Bay offers the full resort experience. On the southwest coast, Darkwood Beach and Turners Beach are other beautiful stretches of coastline with characterful shack bars and swaying palms speckled across the seafront. To the east, Half Moon Bay is one of the most unspoilt on the island that’s popular with windsurfers. With fewer tourists around, it has a remote castaway feel.

UNMISSABLE ADVENTURE

Antigua is most famously known for its calm waters and gentle trade winds — so if there’s one thing to try on the island, it’s sailing! As the sailing capital of the Caribbean, it’s easy to get involved at all levels. You can learn at one of the many hotels or English Harbour’s RYA registered National Sailing Academy. For a more leisurely sailing experience, you can hire a skippered catamaran with Wadadli Cats to cruise and snorkel around quiet sparkling coves and uninhabited islands.

Destinations Antigua’s underwater scene is rich and vibrant, and there are many popular diving schools around the island. Every dive offers new insight into the diverse submarine life offshore. The well-preserved reefs and sunken shipwrecks are an exciting and exotic kaleidoscope of colour, plus the warm waters rarely drop below 26 degrees. The two-mile-long Cade’s Reef is one of the most popular diving sites located roughly 20 minutes by boat from the southwestern coast.

ANTIGUA

On land, a variety of exciting activities await adventurous couples. You can hike, bike, quad bike, go zip wiring and horse ride around the lush tropical island. The Antigua Equestrian Centre is a friendly stable that can lead you on trail rides and beach treks around English Harbour. It’s a romantic and memorable activity, where you can soak up stunning views on horseback and get the unique opportunity to swim with your trusty steed as the sun sets over the horizon.

COVID-19 UPDATES FOR WEDDINGS/ EVENTS For the past year, the tourism sector has been adversely affected by the pandemic with the closure of hotels and restaurants. The government has imposed several restrictions and a curfew is in place to help curb the spread. The weddings/ events industry has also been significantly affected as there are restrictions on large gatherings. Currently, only up to 25 persons are allowed to attend wedding ceremonies and wedding receptions are prohibited. In March 2021, the government started the vaccinations process which saw over 20,000 of an estimated population of 100,000 being vaccinated. Country Romance In Cumbria Words by Emily Williams

C

elebrated for its glistening lakes, cascading waterfalls and rolling green valleys, Cumbria is a rural English county with so much to offer. Carved during the ice age millions of years ago, it’s a dramatic and awe-inspiring setting that will take your breath away. The region has inspired novelists, poets and artists for centuries, so it’s easy to imagine why Cumbria makes a postcard-perfect setting for traditional English weddings. Cumbria includes the areas of Eden Valley, the North Pennines, the Furness Peninsula, a small part of the Yorkshire Dales, and of course, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Lake District. Given that it’s one of the most sparsely populated counties in the UK, nature takes precedence, speckled with occasional little villages, stone churches and stately homes.

You might be familiar with the luminaries who have become intertwined with the cultural history of Cumbria. For example, Beatrix Potter’s world-famous children’s tales of Peter Rabbit were inspired by her lifelong love of the Lake District. The critically acclaimed Romantic poet, William Wordsworth, was also a Cumbrian resident and some of his greatest works were sparked by the natural beauty around Cockermouth, Ullswater and Grasmere. He called it ‘the loveliest spot that man hath ever found’. The timeless radiance of Cumbria’s landscapes makes it an unforgettable UK wedding destination. The photogenic backdrops, period venues and definitive sense of place attracts couples from all over the country. Here are ten romantic Cumbrian venues that will bring your fairy tale to life.

LAURA ASHLEY THE BELSFIELD HOTEL

Treasured for its designer furnishings and classic wallpapers, The Belsfield takes lakeside refinement to a new level. Six acres of landscaped gardens roll out from the Victorian manor to the banks of Lake Windermere. Enjoy champagne alfresco and fine dining in the five stylish reception rooms. The hotel is available for partial or exclusive hire, giving you endless choice for an intimate or grand occasion. With 62 bedrooms including a grand bridal suite for the newlyweds, there’s a place for everyone to relax.

EDEN BARN

Surrounded by 100 acres on the edge of the Lake District National Park, the Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Eden Barn is a 200-yearold barn with a stunning heritage look. Featuring exposed brick, grand chandeliers and a limestone flagged floor, it has a chic rustic feel. Festoon lighting casts a soft glow over the barn and the thatched gazebo outside provides a further area for a daytime drinks reception. The familyrun venue makes an easy-going environment to celebrate your wedding.

HIDDEN RIVER CABINS

Set between the Lake District and Scotland, the Hidden River Cabins are a cluster of historic log buildings that exude character and luxury. Fitted with outdoor hot tubs where you can gaze under the stars, it’s a unique and remote retreat to bring your friends and family for your wedding weekend. Surrounded by meandering riverbanks and ancient woodland, the licensed barn mezzanine is a beautiful ceremony spot. Across the estate, there is also enough room for up to 62 guests and it’s dog-friendly too.

ASKHAM HALL

As the English rose of Cumbria’s manor houses, Askham Hall is a desirable and picturesque place to say ‘I Do'. Featuring 19 bedrooms, a Michelin starred restaurant, a well-stocked wine cellar and a Grade II listed barn, there are lots of opportunities to create a mesmerising wedding weekend.

DID YOU KNOW?

● Bassenthwaite Lake is the only lake in the Lake District. The other ‘lakes’ are considered to be Waters, Meres or Tarns ● Cumbria contains the top five highest peaks in England — Scafell Pike (978m), Sca Fell (964m), Helvellyn (950m,) Ill Crag (935m), and Broad Crag (934m) ● Pencils were invented in the Lake District, using graphite from the mine at Seathwaite

Destinations UNITED KINGDOM

Askham Hall is licensed for ceremonies, or there’s the option to marry in one of the gorgeous churches nearby. The venue promises full flexibility and it only accepts two weddings a week to give you undivided support.

SILVERHOLME

At Silverholme, period Georgian beauty combines with the lush landscape to create a heavenly setting for weddings. The manor house contains several classical event spaces, including a Drawing Room, Dining Room and a Library. Plus, the sleeping quarters can host up to 18 guests. If you’d prefer a festival style wedding, a marquee can be set up for your reception, which increases the guest capacity to 200. It’s a magical scene, surrounded by views that extend to the shores of Lake Windermere.

CASTERTON GRANGE ESTATE

Designed by the iconic 19th Century architect Ewan Christian, Casterton Grange Estate is a historic masterpiece that was designed with entertaining in mind. Its unique staircase and gothic tower make an impact and the five interconnecting function spaces create a great event flow. The main house features 9 en suite double bedrooms that can sleep up to 18, and a further 18 guests can stay in the Lodge House, Stables Cottage and The Barn. Surrounded by calming country landscapes and beautiful lakeside scenery, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to photos.

AUGILL CASTLE

If you’re looking for a unique wedding venue that seems grand but retains a sense of intimacy, Augill Castle in Kirkby Stephen is the perfect balance. The event team offer a highly personalised experience with space for up to 46 seated guests. It’s a timeless place to celebrate in style. With exclusive hire, you’ll get private access to its 20 acres and seventeen double bedrooms for your guests. From the moment they arrive, they’ll be swept away by the sheer beauty and incredible history of the building.

LOW HOUSE

This romantic venue near Penrith and Carlisle is a beautiful setting to arrange all parts of your wedding day. It’s licensed for ceremonies in four different rooms and outside by the gazebos. There are lots of ways to configure your special day and the team would be delighted to assist you. Low House has a homely charm and it will feel as though it’s your own private residence to enjoy for the weekend. The spacious Preparation Room is perfect for getting ready on the wedding morning and the surrounding grounds give a multitude of stunning photo backdrops.

ABBEY HOUSE HOTEL & GARDENS

Create a moment to remember at Abbey House Hotel & Gardens, a place where luxury hospitality, spacious function rooms, 59 suites and peaceful countryside collide. The hotel has a dedicated wedding team to help with every element of your plans, from sourcing and coordinating your chosen suppliers to finalising your table layouts. Set just 20 minutes from Lake Windermere, this Cumbrian hotel is a breathtaking base from which to explore the best of the Lake District. The Furness Abbey ruins on the hotel grounds also make a striking backdrop for wedding blessings, and romantic photographs.

BELMOUNT HALL

Formerly owned by Beatrix Potter, Belmount Hall has now been converted into an exclusive weddings and events venue. The Georgian manor is located near the humble village of Hawkshead, where the delightful St. Michael’s of all Angels Church is a popular place for wedding ceremonies. Alternatively, you are welcome to use the licensed West Barn Rooms on the first floor of Belmount Hall for your civil ceremony. It’s a wonderful set of interconnecting rooms with exposed oak beams and plenty of natural light. WEDDINGSANDHONEYMOONSMAGAZINE.COM

Destinations

Q

WHERE ARE YOU BASED?

We are situated in the National Park of Cape Greco. The Cupule is set between the two main tourist resorts of Agia Napa and Protaras, in Cyprus.

Q

WHAT DO YOU OFFER?

Private, fully exclusive and bespoke events. At the Cupule, we start from the couple’s dream, we design and enhance it with our experience, passion, and creativity and watch it unfold into a unique and perfect fairytale.

We are the trendsetters of destination weddings.

Q

HOW HAVE YOU HANDLED BUSINESS DURING COVID-19?

During the Covid-19 pandemic, none of our clients lost money or were exposed to re-booking fees or higher charges. At the Cupule, all weddings were moved to later dates in 2021 or 2022, at no extra cost. As the wedding planning is all done in house, our couples did not face the difficulties that others must have faced with their planners and venues.

Q

WHAT SERVICES DO YOU PROVIDE?

Q

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR COMPANY?

The Cupule is a family run business. Seven years ago, Marios and I joined forces to create a unique and private venue that the market demanded. Together we are the creative engine that propels the Cupule as the leader of the local market. Our oath is to put all of our talents and means into each event. We consciously decided, to avoid the financial temptation of having a lot of weddings per year and agreed to have a maximum of 30. We knew that by keeping those numbers down we would have the time to create special occasions and help couples bring their visions to life.

Q

WHY SHOULD COUPLES PICK YOUR VENUE?

We are the trendsetters of destination weddings. We always deliver impeccable events, exceeding our couples’ expectations. The Cupule is a high-end, exclusive and private venue, perfecct for you and your guests. We do a limited number bespoke weddings per year so that they are all individual and faultless. We materialise our couples’ dreams. We are extremely proud that all of our clients can contact us at any time, through WhatsApp/messenger or phone and get immediate answers and solutions to any issue they are facing.

Our wedding planning is unique and tailormade to move at the speed and rhythm of each client. We begin the detailed planning stage by initially listening to the desires of each of our couples. We select the colour palette, bringing together the textures, senses and feelings that best describe the couple’s union and individuality. We plan the whole day by highlighting their energy, passions and we visually describe their story to their guests. We rehearse……. a lot! As we do only 30 weddings per year, there is tremendous work behind the scenes that allows the actual event to flow smoothly and flawlessly.

Blame Our Brides + Grooms For Summertime Ideas Words by Special Features Editor Linda Blamer

W

hen we set up the ranch and our wedding venue, we decided to add the tagline, “Where She’s Never Wrong”… get it, because brides are never wrong! Most of our great summertime wedding ideas don’t come from us but come directly from the brides and grooms that book our venue. Here are the top summertime wedding ideas we have seen at our ranch but could work anywhere in the world: POPCORN BAR There are hundreds of different popcorn flavours to choose from for your cocktail hour right through dessert. FOOD TRUCK Some of our couples use them for rehearsal dinners or the main event. But think about using them for a specific function, like for appetizers or dessert. TAKE OFF IN A FUN CAR To top off the evening, why not exit on a horse-drawn carriage, vintage car, or even an old pickup truck. GIVE OUT SUNGLASSES Nothing says summer like a good pair of shades. RELEASE SKY LANTERNS As night draws near, have your family and friends release colourful sky lanterns. USE MASON DRINK JARS A cheap and fun container for drinks, flowers, and/or candles. DANCE FLIP FLOPS Put a basket of flip flops out for guests to wear for dancing and relaxation. BEACH OR POOL BAGS Assuming your venue has a pool or beach, put together a kit of fun summertime essentials. AL FRESCO DINING Summer weddings can be hot, so make sure your food selection is light and refreshing. SIGNATURE COCKTAILS Beyond beer and wine, create a summertime signature cocktail for a light and refreshing drink upon guests arrival. Like mini margaritas!

88

MAY

DECORATE WITH FRESH FRUIT It does not have to be all flowers, you can use fresh fruit to highlight the summer festivities on your tables (and of course, in your summertime drinks)! SUMMER SUCCULENTS Here in New Mexico, nothing says summertime more than cacti and succulents, but they can work anywhere in the world. OUTDOOR LIGHTS Probably the most important decorating item to include in your wedding budget. Here at BHR, we provide over 3,000 lights over our great lawn. A spectacular and romantic sight! PHOTO BOOTHS Something new we have just added to our ranch. Be sure the vendor offers fun costumes and accessories that emphasize summertime. PERSONALIZED POLAROID CAMERAS For my daughter’s wedding, each table had a mini Polaroid camera and film. We encouraged people to take pictures and put them on the photo wall. Great way to capture the fun everyone is having at your wedding! blamerherranch.com

Where wedding dreams come true Delve into the inspiring story behind Crofter’s Green, in Vermont

I

n the summer of 2019, Daniel and Kristin Khan got married in one of the most picturesque areas in the United States: Vermont. With a rustic yet elegant vision and a narrow window of flexibility for their wedding date, Kristin and Daniel fell in love with a gorgeous barn on a property called Sheady Acres, which was unfortunately not available on their intended wedding weekend. Though they found another beautiful barn in which to host their event, Sheady Acres remained in their minds and their hearts. Shortly after touring Sheady Acres, the property became available for purchase, and Daniel and Kristin immediately submitted an offer to buy it. Thus was born Crofter’s Green. Throughout the time spent planning their wedding, Kristin and Daniel came to three conclusions. Firstly, they had a lot of creative ideas for planning an event that was personalized and unique. Secondly, most couples looking to plan a wedding have zero wedding-planning experience. Thirdly, and the factor that led to the purchase of Sheady Acres, they had something special to offer the wedding venue landscape in Vermont. Daniel explained, “Across the dozens of venues we looked at, each venue more or less fell into one of two camps: couples can either rent a DIY space where all of the nitty-gritty details fall squarely on their shoulders, or they can secure a full-service venue with a single cookie-cutter experience with very little option to customize the event. In a rare display of entrepreneurial grit and perseverance, Daniel and Kristin left their successful careers in luxury spirits and early childhood education respectively, along with their lives in Denver, Colorado, to embark on this adventure.

ABOUT CROFTER’S GREEN

Located in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, Crofter’s Green features a collection of 5 eclectically themed and exquisitely appointed tiny homes, a gorgeous post-and-beam wedding barn, and 25 acres of enchanting private woods. The property sits minutes away from Jay Peak, one of the largest ski mountains in eastern North America, and Montgomery Center, a quintessentially charming New England town. This backdrop is complimented perfectly by the highest standards of hospitality that Daniel and Kristin bring to rural Vermont. The gamble that Daniel and Kristin took was not without challenges, largely due to the advent of COVID-19 within their first year of business. However, the difficulties provided a unique opportunity for Crofter’s Green to differentiate themselves during the pandemic. Daniel and Kristin worked diligently to ensure each couple with an interrupted 2020 wedding, received regular communication about navigating the prevailing health guidelines. They also had the opportunity to reschedule cost-free, and had unequivocal support in creatively designing a dream-wedding that still prioritized guests’ safety and compliance. croftersgreen.com

MAY

At the end of the day, a couple’s wedding experience doesn’t begin when the guests arrive. Rather, it begins as soon as the planning commences. Our hope at Crofter’s Green is to provide the flexibility, support, and peace of mind that allows our couples to realize their special day.

Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like volcanoes and then subsides. And when it subsides, you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, It is not excitement, It is not the promulgation of eternal passion. That is just being “in love” which any fool can do. Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, And this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Those that truly love, have roots that grow towards each other underground, And when all the pretty blossom have fallen from their branches, They find that they are one tree and not two.

Louis de Bernières (From Captain Corelli’s Mandolin)

Q&A

Roberta Torresan We had a chat with the acclaimed Italian planner Roberta Torresan about her future plans

Q

HOW ARE YOU GETTING READY TO WELCOME INTERNATIONAL COUPLES AGAIN?

We’ve never stopped communicating with our international couples, helping them, answering their questions and planning their destination weddings in Italy. I know for sure Italy will still be the n°1 country for destination weddings for couples from all over the world.

Q

WHAT WILL WEDDINGS LOOK LIKE POST-PANDEMIC?

We haven’t seen any substantial changes in our clients’ specifications and expectations. Actually, I have never worked with elopements or intimate weddings, being an expert in weekend events with a large number of guests. Moreover, I predict that couples will probably have a greater desire to celebrate with all of their loved ones.

Q

WHAT NEW TRENDS ARE ON THE RISE?

I have seen a rise in weekend weddings, with at least 2 or 3 days of celebrations. These include special activities to welcome and entertain guests during their time in Italy. And this is a trend that will stay.

Q

HOW HAVE YOU HANDLED BUSINESS DURING THIS TIME?

With my team, we have been supporting all of our brides and grooms (and their parents) in every phase of the pandemic. We’ve kept them updated concerning the current situation in Italy. Also, we’ve kept them in touch with venues and vendors, assisting them in negotiating prices and contracts, and scheduling new dates accordingly.

Q

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING DIFFERENTLY?

We have been focusing on safety and hygiene protocols, because we know we must be ready to provide a more extensive service. In the meantime we have refined our event management software, according to the ongoing digital revolution, to provide our demanding clients with an advanced planning and tracking process. robertatorresan.com

Q&A

Tomas De Bruyne Selected by Weddings & Honeymoons as the best floralevent designer of the year...

Q

WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR COMPANY?

We create conceptual floral experiences for large scale events. Our clientele is composed of people longing for extraordinary and unique architectural floral decors. We offer prestigious worldwide services and collaborations with the finest vendors of the global event industry. We help elevate events with floral staging. Every client is unique, and we strive to showcase that uniqueness through intricate and elaborate floral designs. After all, a rich and powerful visual experience turns the event into more than a private celebration. It becomes an unforgettable experience. The designs and execution are testimony of great creativity and artistic talent. They are architectural works of art where the magic of flowers is the main protagonist. Artworks like these always push the boundaries of what is possible. And because of their innovative character, they set the example for other designers.

Q

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A FLORAL DESIGNER?

Almost 30 years! When I was 20 years old, I decided to switch my career from the IT world to the world of floristry. I had an epiphany and found my medium of expression: flowers! The joy, passion, challenges and excitement of working with flowers helped me take the jump. They transformed my life completely, from a rational to an emotional world; and I’ve never regretted my decision since.

102

MAY

WHAT IS THE SECRET TO YOUR SUCCESS?

My ability to create a great story and to communicate it into reality whilst respecting the expectations of my clients. Investing time and attention in my clients helps me grasp their wills and wants and these come to life through bespoke experiences. It’s not only about the flowers, colours, shapes and forms but the interaction of all these elements which give the spectator the right experience. I start from the general picture and extract the elements to create it. My method is to start from the finished product and then fill it up with the minor details. My approach, with a good understanding of space, helps to mould the design elements into a concept. For me, this is a perfect cocktail to manage large scale events.

My mind is constantly wondering how I can become better at what I do.

Q

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST EVENT YOU HAVE DONE?

That will be the event for the Mukesh Ambani Family from Mumbai, India. Their eye for detail and perfection is very impressive and I came into the equation to create a backdrop with millions of flowers for their wedding ceremony. The challenge was not only to oversee the project but to work with the massive design surface. Working with skilled professionals who understood the concept and were able to execute a two-dimensional design giving it a threedimensional feeling, was a once in a lifetime experience. These events lift me creatively. Also, getting an appreciation from the family was nice, and this eventually led to me decorating their next private event.

Planning

Q

WHEN DID YOUR PASSION FOR FLORISTRY START?

That’s a great question as I believe in the magic of passion. Finding each time again and again the joy, the determination and commitment to proceed and grow in what you do is the magic of passion. That is the reason one of my passions is also sharing my expertise with the next generation through education, presentations and lectures. At an age of 17, I met my girlfriend whose parents had a flower shop. To be with her, I was kind of obligated to help in the shop and thus, I got in touch with flowers. From sweeping, cleaning the flowers, to making my first simple hand-tied, I found my way up to express my creativity. Going to eveningschool (as I had a day job) where theory and practice were given, I wanted to sharpen my practical skills, that’s why I started to freelance by learning from the best who gave me a better insight into a conscious creative process.

Q

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE A WORLD-RENOWNED FLORAL EVENT DESIGNER?

First of all, perseverance. Believe in what you do to accomplish your dreams. Be willing to take risks and step out of your comfort zone. Challenging yourself can be an enjoyable experience if there is passion for what you do. Stick to your values and say no to certain projects or clients when they don’t match your values. Believe that learning is valuable. My mind is constantly wondering how I can become better at what I do. I observe and ‘absorb’ the expertise of people who inspire me. And nowadays, we have so many opportunities to do that, from reading books, taking online classes, following lectures, browsing the web, etc. I study my medium to understand its full potential. I deliver what I am good at. I known I don’t cater to everyone. My audience is small but it’s in harmony with my idea of beauty and of event design. When I work with my clients, I don’t have to worry about holding back. I can let my creativity flow knowing that my audience will understand. Of course, each client plays a huge role in my pieces. My work has to represent the client whilst staying true to my beliefs. This, I believe, is the recipe for success.

Q

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR DESIGN APPROACH?

CONNECT: Communication is always key when establishing a good relationship with clients. This first step of the process works as an icebreaker. It allows both parties to balance expectations, assess availability and whether we are the perfect choice for the event in question. COMPILE: As we move on to the next step of our process, the dialogue goes more in-depth and in detail. We invite our clients to be part of a face-to-face inquisitive experience, whether virtual or real. We guide you through the process to compile an accurate and extended brief of your dream event. We are here to convey the message you want to deliver! At this stage, all pieces of information regarding your personality, your aesthetic preferences and your wildest dreams become the foundation we later build upon. CONCEPTUALIZE: This is such an exciting part of the process, both, for us and the clients. Mood-boards, comprehensive inspirational visuals, narratives, scaled plans and colour palettes are part of the tools we use to help our clients truly envision the outcome of the event. Your event is always focused on the message you want to convey. Our job at this stage is to make sure that the message doesn’t get tangled in detail, but that every detail upholds it. CREATE: The journey started with just a few notes and, step by step, we got to the point where you can sit back and trust us with the final result. A professional team executes the design and we carefully supervise that every detail tells your story. Step by step, flower by flower, we compose a symphony of ideas that become your unique event experience! And we always aim for more than you could ever imagine!

HEALTH & LIFESTYLE SPECIAL FEATURE

Me and My Honeymoon

Me & My

Honeymoon An interview with Jacqui Kingswell Founder of The Pilates Class Emily Williams chats to international Pilates instructor, Jacqui Kingswell, about her week of wedding celebrations in Koh Samui and why The Pilates Class makes the perfect pre-holiday workout with your partner.

J

acqui Kingswell’s trending online workouts have kick-started a new wave of Pilates lovers around the world. Her transformative method, known by the name of The Pilates Class, went viral throughout the pandemic. Over 100,000 followers have discovered newfound strength and stillness through her platform during this turbulent time. For most of her life, Jacqui has performed as a professional dancer for artists including Beyoncé, Kylie Minogue and One Direction. Her intensive training and deep-rooted passion for dance and Pilates started in childhood and she’s never looked back since. High profile clients now follow her membership religiously and share her holistic approach to health and wellbeing. Jacqui uploads new Pilates, cardio, barre and meditation video classes each week for subscribed members, with pre and post-natal options too. She focuses on strong techniques and posture to create lasting change both mentally and physically. She’s also a huge advocate for couples training together and the positive connection that it brings. Here, we speak with Jacqui about her honeymoon memories with loved ones on the week of her destination wedding, and how Pilates gave her confidence inside and out as she walked down the aisle.

SO JACQUI, WHERE DID YOU GET MARRIED AND WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE MEMORY OF THE DAY?

My husband and I got married on Koh Samui Island in a villa amongst the mountains overlooking the ocean. We had a lot of guests coming from Europe and Australia so this was the perfect halfway point for both parties. It was such a beautiful part of the world to celebrate with our family and friends. My favourite memory of the day was walking down the aisle and seeing my husband. I’ll never forget the look in his eyes when we first saw each other that day. It was a very special moment between the two of us.

The Pilates Class is something you can do all year round. It’s a program that prepares you for the rest of your life, a connection and insight into the mind and body.

WHAT DESTINATION DID YOU PICK FOR YOUR HONEYMOON AND WHY?

We decided to stay on the island for a week after the wedding with our family and friends to celebrate. Our guests travelled so far to be with us on this day so we wanted to spend as much time with them as we could. It was a honeymoon holiday for us but also for our family and friends. We then came back to Sydney and went straight into a big renovation on our home - that was definitely one way to see how strong the marriage was after the wedding!

WHAT ACTIVITIES DID YOU TRY WHILST YOU WERE IN THAILAND?

We took a boat with our family and friends to visit other islands, went kayaking and snorkelling, explored the island and spent a lot of time swimming in the ocean.

WHAT ARE YOUR TRAVEL TIPS FOR COUPLES LOOKING TO BOOK A HONEYMOON?

My husband and I love to travel and discover the world together, so it was a very exciting time. My advice would be to envision what sort of trip you and your partner would thrive in most, whether that be relaxing by the pool in a resort, or hiking and adventuring. Once there, I recommend going somewhere you’ve never been before; live like the local people and try as much local food as you can. Life is so much better when it’s shared and to try a new experience with someone you love makes it unforgettable.

WHAT MAKES THE PILATES CLASS THE IDEAL PRE-HONEYMOON WORKOUT REGIME?

Me and My Honeymoon

The Pilates Class is something you can do all year round. It’s a program that prepares you for the rest of your life, a connection and insight into the mind and body. The classes are for everybody so you can do it with your partner too. My husband and I do the classes together in the morning, and even if we go on a holiday with friends and family, they join in too. It’s a great way to start the day, it gets your body moving and the endorphins flowing, and it’s great for mental clarity.
