TOP TIP Skin preparation is a huge focus for me. It is absolutely essential for creating a beautiful and radiant canvas on which to apply makeup. Over the years, I have really developed a unique way in which I prep the skin for makeup and tailor the products I use to each individual depending on their skin type and age.

Reasons to Visit Canouan Did you know?

St. Vincent and the Grenadines is very popular for being a weddings and honeymoon paradise and has won the Best Honeymoon Island of The Year presented by the Caribbean Travel World Awards in 2007 and again in 2008.

O

ne of the many treasures of St Vincent and the Grenadines, the island of Canouan is a slice of paradise in the heart of the Caribbean Sea. A dreamy honeymoon escape boasting of soft sands, warm waters and a gentle tropical breeze, spend your days in compete bliss lounging beneath the mesmerising sun. Journeying to this tropical gem is an opportunity that cannot be missed. If you still need convincing we’ve laid out 5 reasons why the magical island of Canouan, should be the destination of choice for your wedding and honeymoon.

1. Golden Beaches

No matter where you stay, you’ll find a beach just a short walk away. Famed for their powdery seashores and golden coastlines, Canouan is home to some of the best and most secluded beaches in the Grenadines. If you’re staying in the quaint city of Charlestown, you can take your pick of the fine local beaches, perfect for a picnic with your love. For a more luxurious experience, the many resorts on the island are home to plenty of peaceful intimate beaches also.

2. Delicious Cusine

Charlestown is one of the best places to sample traditional Grenadines cuisine. Composed of myriad of spectacular flavours inspired by dishes from around the world, Vincentian cuisine is a food-lover’s dream. As an island surrounded by a temperate body of water, it’s no surprise that seafood plays an integral part in their meals. Indulge in sumptuous flavours of breadfruit and fried jackfruit; the national dish can be found in several local restaurants. Other Vincentian staples, include fresh lobster, squid, plantains, yams and arrowroot.

3. Blissful Spas

Tropical island getaways are for relaxation and rejuvenation; and what better way to relax than to spend your day lounging at a tranquil spa. Canouan is home to several luxurious resorts each housing their own bespoke spas, so you’ll be spoilt for choice. Indulge your mind body and soul, with a selection of blissful spa treatments, specially created to enthral you to leave behind the concerns of everyday life. Delight in a variety deep tissue and hot stone massages, facials, scrubs and manicures and pedicures, as you overlook the scenic panoramic views of the ocean. (canouan-island. com)

4. Water Sports

Being surrounded by a body of water has its perks. Perfect for adventure seeking couples, Canouan offers a thrilling variety of water sports and activities. Dive beneath the surface on a diving excursion and experience the wonder of marine wildlife, or drift along the ocean’s surface on a hydro bike or a kayak. Discover the picturesque surrounding islands, with a boat tour. Chose from a Catamaran, Powerboat or Schooner and set sail across the glimmering Caribbean Sea.

THE COUPLE Shivani & David Infusing Hindu, Catholic and Jewish traditions, Shivani and David celebrated their love in a cultural spring wedding

S

anta Monica is where we lived together for the first time; therefore it holds a special significance for us. We are both active and love living near the beach, where we would bike, surf, and play paddle tennis. We knew our family and friends would enjoy doing the same. When it came to choosing our venue, we both thought the Fairmont lawn was a beautiful setting for a wedding ceremony, under its large historic bay fig tree. We could then flow easily into the happy hour and reception. The Fairmont is also located on Ocean drive, just steps from the beach, which we knew our family and friends would appreciate! We made an effort to keep costs down because the venue’s beauty spoke for itself, the decorations we added were minimal. We went with non-premium alcohol offerings, and since neither of us have a sweet tooth; we provided a cookie and brownie platter for each table, instead of buying a large cake. Our rehearsal dinner and party was located at a beautiful public Santa Monica beach venue, which kept rental costs to a minimum. When it came to decorating our venue, we were looking for natural and rustic looks. Once again, the venue really spoke for itself. Additional items, such as stationary, lighting, and flowers, were arranged by our planner Callista Osborn. I’ve always loved lilac flowers and wanted to incorporate that color into our wedding designs, so we did! I bought my dress from a boutique designer in India named Chamee & Palak. The design I wanted fused both Indian and classic American style, with some added design from our color palette. And, it was comfortable with no hassle, and that was important to me! For my hair and makeup, I chose a natural and light look. The side-braid hair style was inspired by Katniss Everdeen and spruced up for the occasion!

REAL LIFE WEDDINGS

THE COUPLE Harriet & Rob Harriet and Rob found their dolce vita in the sunshine of Sorrento

R

ob, my now husband, suggested Sorrento, Italy for our destination wedding and as soon as I saw the Cloisters I knew it was the place! We booked to visit two years before we got married and went to see Villa Antiche Mura recommended by our wedding planner, Victoria at Sophisticated Weddings. We fell in love with it straight away – as did our guests later on! My vintage-style dress is an Essence of Australia design from Laura May boutique in Cardiff. My mother picked it out and to be honest I didn’t think much of it on the hanger but agreed to try it on. I loved it! Kate Moss has always been my idol and I thought her wedding dress was beautifully effortless, so it made sense that I would choose a similar design. For my hair, I wanted a bohemian vibe that was not overdone. I hate the wet hairspray look! I’m so lucky that my best friend and Maid of Honour is amazing with hair, so she did the styling. To complete my look I chose makeup artist, Jimena and gave her a picture of when I had previously had my makeup done with gold tones. For the bridesmaids dresses, I gave my five bridesmaids the opportunity to decide what colour they wanted. I was openminded, but they all chose a light grey. I saw a post on Pinterest that I liked with lilac and pink flowers and thought this would complement the grey nicely in our bouquets. My florist Giovanni Castellano was fantastic at making my image a reality. My beautiful bouquet looked like it had been picked from a meadow. Luckily for us Sorrento is a stunning destination that speaks for itself, so the venue didn’t require much in terms of decoration. We had tall vases with lilac and white flowers on each table. We were very lucky to have our fantastic wedding planner Victoria; we couldn’t have done it without her! She handled everything and it all went so smoothly. To other brides, I would say that the most important thing to remember throughout the process is not to stress too much! Be flexible and negotiate on things if you can. Your wedding should be enjoyable. We loved every minute of ours! And if you want to get married in Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast, definitely get in touch with Victoria, she is literally a diamond!

Luxurious Shea Balm, Love Henri, £34

STEP 1 Ethereal Complexion

Apply DCL Multi-Action Penta Peel and Pro Collagen Hydra-Gel Eye Masks for a good 20 minutes. Moisturise all over the face and neck for plumped, ultra-hydrate and dewy skin. Add an illuminating primer, Wonderglow by Charlotte Tilburry, mixed with a couple of drops of ICONIC London Illuminator to give an illuminating effect. To crack the code of texture and colour, use Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Foundation for the eyes, nose, cheekbones and brow bones. For concealer Bare Minerals BARESKIN Serum Concealer is great for even coverage, with added luminosity for a youthful glow.

STEP 2 Soft Blush

Apply vegan-friendly Delilah Cosmetics Clementine Blush to lightly contour and give a soft, natural flush to the cheeks. The key to applying blusher is to use minimal product and build the colour up. Avoid a pearlescent, pale tone as a peachy blush is what really does the trick in bringing the skin to life.

STEP 3 Eyes to Mesmerise

Use two-tones of sunset hues, a romantic combination of orange and pink, blended with warm earthy tones of terracotta and rust onto the eyelid using upward motions over the eye socket. Using a small smudging brush trace the colour underneath the lower lashes. Be sure to focus on the outer corners to create a cat eye shape and a shimmer of iridescent rose gold pigment pot in shade Melon By MAC on the centre of the eyelids and the inner corners to really open up the eyes and give added drama. Then use a lengthening mascara from the middle to the tip and a little more to the outer lashes for extra flair using Benefit ‘They’re Real’ mascara.

STEP 4 Unruly Brows

I always work with the natural shape of the brow, I love that brushed up, bushy, lion mane brow look. I used Soap Brows to brush up my models brows and set them in place. I then worked with the hair’s natural direction and filled in her brows lightly using brushstroke motions with Brow Master By Bare Minerals.

STEP 5 Dreamy Lips

Shea Balm by Love Henri is a go-to lip product to blitz and buff dry lips. Next, a highly pigmented, vibrant pink lip paint by Fenty By Rihanna in shade Unlocked for the outer edges, in combination with Pillow Talk by Charlotte Tilbury for the centre. The dreamlike duo gives a two dimensional hot-pink haze somewhere between festival and whimsical.

Let me not to the marriage of true minds Admit impediments. Love is not love Which alters when it alteration finds, Or bends with the remover to remove. O no! it is an ever-fixed mark That looks on tempests and is never shaken; It is the star to every wand’ring bark, Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken. Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks Within his bending sickle’s compass come; Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks, But bears it out even to the edge of doom. If this be error and upon me prov’d, I never writ, nor no man ever lov’d.

With staple foods varying from seafood, coconuts and rice, the cuisine resembles familiar south-east Asian tastes. Seafood is an integral part of the islands cuisine, and most dishes are designed around it. Tuna, Mahi-Mahi, and Wahoo are types of fish that can be found in most Maldivian meals and is used to create curries and soups, as well as a typical breakfast choice called Mas Huni (a blend of tuna fish with grated coconut, onions, chilli and lime juice, served with a griddled pancake called roshi). Throughout the day, locals often snack on what they call hedhikaa, or ‘short eats’. A Scandanavia Dream A Scandinavian capital with charm, culture and stunning natural resources, Oslo lures tourists year round to experience true Norwegian hospitality

T

he moment you step off the plane, you sense that the Norwegians have gotten things right. One of the wealthiest and happiest countries in the world, Norway pays attention to the small details that really make life a treat for anyone and everyone coming to stay. Even the airport in Oslo is a complete gem with warm wood that reminds one of a Viking ship, but in a cosy, hygge way. It’s the perfect welcome to a cold country, made warmer by the smiling faces and efficiency of the Norwegians. Like other Scandinavian cities, Oslo was built up around the 1950s into the cosmopolitan jewel we see today. As a result, many buildings are quite shiny and new, reflecting the spirit of grandeur and advancement of a booming society. Oslo is an art-loving city and you don’t have to look far to see public sculptures adorning bridges, parks and sidewalks. There is a flurry of museums to discover, historical sites like the ancient Askershus fortress and a plethora of fish restaurants to whet your appetite. Oslo in the summer is an absolute dream for honeymooners and bridal couples, who can take advantage of rooftop bars, boat rides and breathtaking views of the fjord.

City Center

Take a stroll through the heart of the city, where you will undoubtedly walk along Karl Johans Gate as it throbs with people on their way to ogle the Royal Palace, Parliament and the grand Oslo Cathedral. All three are worth a visit, though only the latter two allow entrance. The cathedral is a definite highlight with delightful colorful murals splashed across its ceiling, a stunning carved altar and a glimmering baroque organ. Your next stop should be the Nobel Peace Center, which yields fascinating stories of the genius of Nobel Prize laureates. This is quite close to the Askershus Fortress, a medieval castle that tells the tale of Norway of old. Vigna Belvedere A family run business, Vigna Belvedere, shines light on the ancient Italian lifestyle of viniculture. The lush vineyards of this stunning area stem from a long-standing family history of over 200 years of passionate effort

T

ucked away between the exquisite landlocked lagoons of Venice and the grand Carnic Alps, Vigna Belvedere rises on a rich and secluded land that has been producing succulent and superb prosecco for generations. A symbol of this long-established heritage resides in the Stone Pine design, which adorns every sparkling bottle. The Stone Pine is nature’s gift for the construction of boats and palaces and it earns exceptional respect and meticulous care for the sustainability of the lush surroundings. The emphasis on sustainability enhances the quality of this heavenly area. The vineyard is nourished day-by-day and is a natural green oasis where a healthy and untouched cultivation of grapes transforms into the delicate and fresh taste of wine. Without any use of herbicides and by keeping the plant treatments to a minimum, non-organic stress is limited. Through a harmonious pruning, the organic concept fostered by the Vigna celebrates quality grapes over quantity.

Doc Najma

Passion and love are the two key ingredients to the everlasting essence of Vigna Belvedere, as infused in the classy Prosecco Doc Najma Vintage 2017. Ready to seduce palates with its zesty surprising taste, it flourishes though the care for the grapes and patience for the harvest month. A true symbol of love, this Prosecco Brut, has a heart-warming nuance. Najma, is the name of the cherished possession belonging to the family, once owned by an idealistic American sailor. He fell in love with the Venetian canals and the warmth of its people. He bought a gondola to sail across the lagoon and named it after his Algerian lover Najma. Before departing in search of new horizons, he left his polished mahogany rowing boat to his cheerful Venetian friends, who would forever cherish it in his place. The rooted affection for traditional crafts and centuries-old family customs drizzles a magical aura on the sumptuous produce of this Vigna. Every tiny step leading up to the day of the bottling is followed and professionally cared for. From the gentle pressing to the primary fermentation of the precious Glera grapes, an attentive eye leads the process perfectly through the sparkling procedure and the four months resting in contact with the yeast.

“Passion and love are the

two key ingredients to the everlasting essence of Vigna Belvedere, as infused in the classy Prosecco Doc Najma Vintage 2017.

An appetizing refreshment, the Prosecco Najma, marries utterly with a tantalising wedding reception overlooking the picturesque Venetian backdrop. Lured by the scarlet Italian sunset, satiate accompanied by the refined aromas bursting though the freshness of this straw yellow wine. The enveloping flare of earthy Renetta apple and the hint of fresh hazelnut pare perfectly with fresh and tasty seafood or with a creamy risotto al dente. There is nothing more alluring than a chilled glass of Prosecco on a warm summer day floating quietly over the romantic lagoon.

A Luscious Glass of Bubbly

Indulge in the nectar of the gods, characterised by a delicate and fresh taste. Start your aperitif with the refined delicious zest of crispy apple and peach of the Prosecco-Extra Dry Doc, as you unwind surrounded by the soft breeze of the Italian bucolic landscape. Gather around the banqueting table, enriched by a mouth-watering display of delicious Italian delicacies, with a glass of Prosecco-Brut Doc and sip your way through a divine culinary experience. Ideal with pasta and fish dishes, this Brut wine is mesmerising to the olfactory sense with its delicate white spring flower sensation. For a classy and modern meal, pair a Prosecco Millesimato Doc, accompanied by floral notes and perfectly rounded by a creamy and enveloping kick. Indeed, prepare for quintessential toasts with the best quality bubbles of aromatic organic Prosecco. WWW.DWHA.CO.UK

Aosta Valley WEDDING TRADITION Since the Middle Ages, local craftsmen from the Aosta Valley have produced chracterful clogs called ‘soques’. The traditional footwear is made from local tanned leather and alder wood. Italian designer, Chicco Margaroli, has transformed these classical shoes into wearable works of art with unique surficial illustrations. Why not give your wedding accessories a lively twist? L

ocated at the unique interface below Switzerland and France, this undulating sweep of northwestern Italy promises adventure at altitude all year round for locals, neighbouring nationals and tourists alike. The territory’s Roman roots gave rise to its ancient architectural splendour, making it common to come across imperial bridges and Medieval castles strewn across the land today. One such monumental treasure is the imposing Fort Bard, which stands proudly at the gateway to the Aosta Valley.

Heart of the Alps

Within just a two hour drive from Milan and Turin, residing in the Aosta Valley allows easy access to Europe’s three highest mountains. Quite rightly, this makes the region an incomparable spot for exhilerating snowsports. Make fresh tracks through pillowy pistes and return to the comfort of a roaring fire in one of its six first class ski resorts if you visit in winter. Or in summer, the vista blossoms to reveal glittering glacial lakes, 4500km of trekking trails and 500km mountain biking tracks. There’s no doubt why this sensational scene would make a jaw-dropping backdrop for your wedding vows, and the crisp mountain air will leave you inspired to begin your next chapter together. Many couples opt to extend their time Italy with a romantic honeymoon road trip.

Don’t Miss

For couples looking for a culinary adventure with a difference, try to coincide your trip to the Aosta Valley with the annual Mountain Gourmet Ski Experience. Here, internationally acclaimed British chefs fly in to share their alchemy of extraordinary flavours in a series of intimate workshops and gourmet alpine dinners overlooking the piste. Based in the Italian resort of Courmayeur, guests stay at the Grand Hotel Royal & Golf for the duration of this unmissable event, where Michelin Star dining meets Mont Blanc. Book on to the next exclusive event at momentumski.com.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT...

DID YOU KNOW? You can now tie the knot at an impressive altitude of 3,466 metres in the Aosta Valley — venues surely can’t get more extraordinary than this. At the Skyway Monte Bianco, the bride, groom and guests can gather along with an unexpected witness: the majestic Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Europe.

From early settlements until now, the Aosta Valley’s traditional produce has been synonymous with its ‘terroir’, or the mountainous earth and climate that it is grown and sourced from. This environmental connection gives it a distinct identity, and some foods are celebrated with the certified Protected Designation of Origin (DOP). Speaking of which, the hearty Fontina Cheese gained the DOP in 1996, and has since become a symbolic delicacy of the Aosta Valley. It is typically used in fondue recipes, Valpelline soup and cheese board selections. This flavoursome cheese could be incorporated into your wedding day menu as an authentic reminder of this bountiful region.

Piedmont WEDDING TRADITION A fabled Italian wedding tradition involves breaking a vase at the end of the celebration. Fortune has it that the number of shattered pieces equates to the number of happy married years! Many brides and grooms now treat this custom as a distant memory, and so it is not necessarily put into practice today. This wedding scene has been portrayed comically in the hit film, ‘When In Rome’, starring Josh Duhamel and Kristen Bell.

W

hen translated to ‘foot of the mountain’, you can only imagine the stunning scenery and superb ski resorts that frame this northwesterly alpine province. Many nature reserves dot the region including the Gran Paradiso National Park, where you’ll find protected flora and fauna and sparkling glacial features; or the Sacri Monti (Sacred Mountains), where visitors can take a spiritual trek up to a series of resplendant religious buildings atop each summit. Towards the centre, Turin has a remarkle assortment of cultural heritage and one of the largest Egyptian Museums in the world, plus a National Automobile Museum dedicated to the captial’s identification as the car manufacturing engine of Italy.

Royal Residences Aplenty

Fourteen of the historic houses of Savoy in Piedmont were listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1997. These properties have become symbols the stately Savoy family and their resounding influence over the land. For example, the magnificent hunting lodge at Stupinigi and the Reggia Di Venaria Palace demonstrate an architectural prowess that is second to none. From noble fortresses to regal palaces, they are crystallisations of court life over the 18th and 19th centuries.

Don’t Miss

The Piedmontes town of Ivrea hosts a unique celebration called The Carnival of Ivrea. Established in 1808, it features a number of historical figures and reenactments of the civil rebellion, which climax with the notorious ‘Battle of The Oranges’. Here, the streets become alight with raucous sounds, colours and citrus fragrances as an army of fruit throwers pound the piazza and people with oranges. This is followed by a float procession and a traditional meal of polenta and cod; it’s a fun interactive experience to remember!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT...

DID YOU KNOW?

Chocoholics will rejoice in Turin; it’s recognised as the chocolate heart of Europe and it produces 40% of Italy’s chocolate. Beginning in the 17th century, chocolatiers began to experiement with ingredients by mixing cacao, vanilla, water and sugar to create a mouldable paste that could solidify into any desired shape.

Bra, in Piedmont, was the birthplace of ‘Slow Food’, a grassroots organisation set up by Carlo Petrini that celebrates local food cultures and and traditional cooking practices. From humble beginnings in 1989, it has grown into a global network of 160 countries, who campaign for a more sustainable and nourishing food system for all.

The chocolate melted into a creme which was first commercialised by Turinese pastry maker, Pietro Ferrero in 1946. He set the foundations for the iconic brand of Nutella! It doesn’t stop here, as Bicerin was also first founded in the Savoy Capital. This sweet chocolate drink is made of espresso, cacao and milk poured into a rounded glass.

Lombardy WEDDING TRADITION A detail that has become embedded in the folklore of Italian tradition is the symbol of the satin pouch. On her wedding day, the bride carries a bag as she swirls around the ballroom. Guests place envelopes of money inside to bank their chances of dancing with her. Italian weddings are romantic, lively and full of dance and song. Guests hold colourful paper streamers tied the happy couple’s hands as they dance, to represent good wishes and love.

F

rom the highest peaks to the low-lying depressions of the Po Valley, Lombardy is the optimum spot to discover a plethora of dramatic northern Italian landscapes. Adjoining to Switzerland in the north, this region is one of the largest countrywide. Not only is it recognised as a desirable area for winter sports, with top-knotch ski resorts thriving in Tonale, Madesimo, Bormio and Livigno; but urban seekers also enjoy the fashion capital of Milan, the second most populated city in Italy. In the city centre, you will see architectural echoes of its former Roman-era embedded between the flamboyant palaces and gothic cathedrals that were erected during the Renaissance. Leonardo Da Vinci is regarded as the polymath of this epoch and his world famous ‘Last Supper’ fresco can be seen in all its original glory at the Church of Santa Maria Delle Grazie.

Fall in love with the Lakes

The sparkling blue waters of northern Italy have not only stolen the hearts of painters, poets and musicians for centuries, but they are now firmly rooted as a dream location for destination weddings. Lake Garda, Lake Como and Lake Maggiore are the three key adored lagoons. Each are fringed by manicured gardens and noble aristrocratic homes, including Villa La Gaeta, where scenes from Casino Royale were filmed; and the neoclassical Villa Olmo which hosts public art exhibitions. Besides absorbing this awe inspiring scene, there are also action-packed adventures available on the water, such as windsurfing, canoeing, sailing, waterskiing, jetskiing and kitesurfing — take your pick!

Beyond the buzz of your wedding day celebrations, you’ll be in need of some well deserved rest and recuperation. Head to the mountains for muscle relaxation in Bormio’s therapeutic thermal baths and natural hot springs. Today, the water can still reach up to 40 degrees!

Risotto Alla Milanese is a local speciality. The rice is infused with delicate herbal flavours and often served as a side for ossobuco, a tender Milanese cut of veal shank. This can be swapped for freshly grilled lake waterfish if preferred; it’s a refined dinner time delight to add to your wedding day menu. As for desserts, Milan brought the classic christmas panettone to the world. This light and sweet bread loaf has become a true symbol of Italian festivity. Amaretto also comes from Saronno, which is a liqour with a bittersweet almond taste. It’s popular on its own or with desserts.

DID YOU KNOW? Agnone is known as the town of bells, as it still specialises in the manufacture of bells for the world’s most important churches. Nearby, Scapoli is identified as the town of bagpipes, with its museum and festival dedicated to this curious instrument. As a region, Molise is deeply respected for its careful protection of traditional culture and craft.

Extra Virgin olive oil is a regional speciality Its silky texture and refined taste reflects the terroir of the groves. Gourmet tours of the region are a popular activity for visitors wanting to taste and learn about the oil making process. It is favourably served with crusty bread and a selection of cold meats, such as ventricina and saggicciotti salame. Campania WEDDING TRADITION To ward off bad luck, the groom is encouraged to carry a piece of iron in his pocket. This theme is often incorporated to other parts of the wedding for extra luck. For example, iron-themed wedding favours have become popular at modern Italian weddings, such as giving bottle openers, metal luggage tags and cast iron tealight holders. They make a special keepsake for guests, long after the wedding day has come to an end.

S

panning along the Tyrrhenian Sea from the mouth of the Garigliano River to the Gulf of Policastro, the uncontested beauty of this coastline is a honeymooner’s hotspot. The inviting turqoise ocean laps against vibrant cliff towns and carvernous coves. Luxury yachts swoop celebrities and business elite to the enthralling isles of Capri and Ischia. It is clear that the Gulf of Naples’s unmistakeable allure has stood the test of time.

Unearthing the Secrets of Pompeii

Don’t let the calm and timeless environment of Campania fool you, as it was once subject to turbulance of unthinkable extremity. Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 BC and wiped out the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata in their entirety. The volcano still still casts its shadowy presence over the ruins and stands a sobering reminder of the power of natural distaster. The archaeological sites are located a short distance from the contemporary capital of Naples and make up one of Italy’s 54 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. After rediscovering the site in 1748 when building King Charles III Palace, dedicated archeologists and historians have excavated an unparalleled insight into the everyday life of classical antiquity, from its mesmerising murals and mosaics, to decorative courtyards frozen in time.

Don’t Miss

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most desirable and romantic destinations to visit in the world. A chain of twelve small colourful towns cascade from the mountain and are joined by a winding coastal road. Sorrento, Amalfi, Ravello, Vietri sul Mare and Positano make up a part of this precious string, surrounded by the fragrant scent of citrus trees and olive groves. A wonderful way to see all of the towns in one trip is to hire a car and take the scenic route at your own pace.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT... Campania is well known for its pizzas, with the world’s first pizzeria, Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba, opening its doors in Naples in 1830.

DID YOU KNOW? Before the eruption in 79 BC, Vesuvius had not exploded for 1800 years. It was only after the catastrophic event that they created the name ‘volcano’ from the derivative ‘Vulcan’, meaning the Roman God of the Flame and Metal Forgery. Pompeii is very well preserved because the city was buried so quickly by volcanic ash.

The Margherita pizza was named after Queen Margherita Teresa Giovanni after her visit to the city in 1889. The primary colours used in this delicious dough-based dish appear in the Italian Flag: the basil is green, the cheese represents the white and the tomato sauce symbolises the red. For the toppings, the Meditteranean sun guarantees the juiciest tomatoes, and buffalo mozzarella is also masterfully produced in the areas of Mondragone, Battipaglia, Capua and Eboli.

LET’S GET MARRIED IN ITALY

Basilicata WEDDING TRADITION The concept of the ‘honeymoon’ dates back to 5th century European cultures, when time was measured by moon cycles. After their marriage, couples would drink an alcoholic honey wine called mead for one moon cycle, or what we now know as one month. The tradition has since developed into an intimate secluded escape, where couples can enjoy their new married life in a cherished or undiscovered place together.

I

ntrepid travellers are increasingly making their way to Basilicata to observe the unspoilt beauty and history of this beguiling region. Touching both the Ionian and the Tyrrhenian Sea, the area is blanketed inbetween with rich forests and mountainous landscapes, with some rural villages reaching an altitude of 1000 metres. Pure air and tranquil waters meet at the Monticchio Lake, of the most magical locations in Basilicata. Lake Grande and Lake Piccolo are two other spectacular natural water reserves that fill the two dormant craters of Mount Vulture. The abundance of streams and brooks, there are plenty of opportunities for exhilirating water sports.

The Second Bethlehem

Basilicata’s Paleolithic province of Matera dates back to when peculiar Sassi settlements and Rupestrian churches were established in a network of limestone grottoes. Today, as travellers wander through the compact lattice of narrow streets in the Civita, it is as though they are transported to the scene of Nativity. It’s no surprise why Mel Gibson chose to film The Passion of the Christ in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other artists, writers and film directors have been inspired by the excavated caverns that once sheltered shepherds and their flocks. This gave rise to its affectionate nickname as ‘The Second Bethlehem’.

Don’t Miss

On the Tyrrhenian coastline, the city of Maratea is dominated by fourty four churches, each richly decorated with ornate frescoes, as well as the gargantuan statue of the Redeemer, second in size only to the largest in Rio de Janeiro. It is also well known for its shopping and lively nightlife; vacationers can spend a fun day out browsing the stores the Old Town and dining in the piazza before dancing the night away with friends or that special someone.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT...

DID YOU KNOW? Matera is well and truly in the tourism spotlight, as it has been crowned as one of the two European Capitals of Culture for the year 2019. This reputable status will draw great benenfits into the city, including national and European funds to schedule a series of cultural events and regenerate infrastructure in this mystical City of Stones.

Homemade pasta is a real delicacy in Basilicata, especially the durum wheat variety kneaded with special tools like the maccarunara (a metal rolling pin cutter) and the cavarola board. These instruments were used to create intricate designs and shapes for many types of pasta. Pepperoncino, a hot pepper sauce is traditionally added. It packs a punch and is known locally as diavolicchio, meaning little devil! The sauce is often added to vegetable plates too, including vegetable calzone and ciamotte, a dish that combines fried peppers, eggplants and potatoes.

Apulia WEDDING TRADITION There are plenty of complex numerical traditions to bear in mind when planning an Italian wedding. For instance, the number 13 is considered a lucky number all round, except for table arrangements because 13 were sitting at the table during the religious Last Supper. Tuesday and Friday weddings are also considered bad days to marry, whereas Sunday ceremonies are viewed as the luckiest day, bringing the couple future fertility and prosperity.

A

pulia, the Roman name for ‘Puglia’, is an spellbinding location for weddings, honeymoons and romantic holidays alike. From breathaking sands and crystalline waters at Torre dell’Orso, to towns embossed with historical value, there is a lot to absorb in the southern spur of Italy’s outline. The captivating conical triulli settlements in Alberobello are a must-see UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as the intriguing octagonal Castel del Monte, situated on a hill in Andria. Its layers of Gothic, Romanesque and Norman architecture blend into one dynamic masterpiece.

The Heel of Italy’s Boot

The protusion of Italy’s southern spur boasts marvellous stretches of sand and front row views to rose-tinted sunsets, and so the options are endless for any beachlover. The sub-region of Gargano is of particular interest here, as it forms part of the National Park that protects the distinctive ecosystems of Lake Lesina and Varano, the Foresta Umbra and the aquamarine jewels of Tremiti. Expert guides can lead visitors on magical nocturnal hikes through the Foresta Umbria to spot shy animals by night, and the three Tremiti islets of San Nicola, San Domino and Capraia are a diver’s dream. No wonder marine enthusiasts continually gravitate to this region to spot rare underwater species.

Don’t Miss

Every August, visitors from all over Europe come to see the famous ‘La Notte della Taranta’ (Night of the Tarantola ) dance festival at Melpignano. Legend has it that women working in the fields would get bitten by tarantulas, and to help the poison leave their bodies, they would confidently dance barefoot to the sound of a tambourine as the sun descended into dusk. There are three distinctive dances: the pizzica tarantata, pizzica-scherma and pizzica-pizzica.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT...

DID YOU KNOW? The fascinating trulli settlements date back as far as the Bronze Age. The drywall constructions were a result of a tax enforcement in the 15th century, which forced peasants to source new ways to construct without using mortar. They turned out to be some of the world’s sturdiest structures to date, that have stood the test of time.

Simple, hearty ingredients are used in Apulia, with primary elements including meat and fish, combined with durum wheat, local vegetables and loca virgin olive oil. In particular, the wheat is used to make popular forms of southern Italian pasta, such as orecchiette and strascinati. Vegetable growth is bountiful in Apulia, and so adding them to pasta dishes makes a healthy and colourful element to the plate. Cabbage, string beans and tomatoes are a few options, to which bacon or other meat and fish varieties are added from the region’s 800km of seashores.

LET’S GET MARRIED IN ITALY

Calabria WEDDING TRADITION Unlike the common desire to wish for bright blue skies and warm weather on your European wedding day, in Italy a rain shower is seen as immensely lucky. This is because rain is associated with abundance — the Italian saying is ‘sposa bagnata, sposa fortunata’, which means ‘a wet bride is a lucky bride’. So, do not fear if you see an ominous grey cloud approaching, as the chance of rain will sprinkle you and your guests with good wishes for the future.

W

ith tourists typically converging at the spur of Italy’s boot, its southwestern counterpart is one of the least known regions in Italy. Natives like to make the most of this unhurried, undiscovered gem and there is plenty of space for everyone to spread out, with almost 500 miles of beach to share. Inland from the coast, only 10% of the region is flat, and the mountainous centre is dominated by the national parks of Sila, Serre, Aspromonte and Pollino, where sporadic eagle-nest hamlets live ‘the dolce vita’ in blissful seclusion.

Coast of the Gods

The stunning Tyrrhenian coastline is broken up by several particularly charming towns, including Tropea. Here, the fairy tale 4th century Santa Maria dell’Isola makes a beautiful photograph opportunity. This medieval monastic church has been given several regenerations after earthquake damage, and the topography of the land has changed so much that its original island has become part of the mainland. Its winding flight of steps are carved directly into the cliffside.

Don’t Miss

A recommended stop off on your journey is the mysterious Riace Bronzes. These sculptural showpieces are a leading attraction at the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria. In 1972, these two majestic statues were discovered by chance, hundreds of miles off the coast of Riace on the floor of the Ionian Sea. They are in tip top condition despite dating back to the 5th Century B.C. It is rumoured that the statues were likely have beem made in Athens and then sent to Rome. On the journey, the ship may have sunk, along with these remarkable classsical Greek sculptures.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT... The spiciest vegetable in Italy is grown here; the Calabrian hot pepper (peperoncino). The intensity is often balanced with the sweet taste of the Tropea red onion, a delightful product protected by the PGI quality mark.

DID YOU KNOW? Along Calabria’s 497 miles of unspoilt coast, Capo Vaticano has been categorised as one of the top 100 most beautiful beaches in Italy. In the province of Vibo Valentia, its long stretch of fine sand is surrounded by archaic foliage and tickled by cerulean Ionian and Tyrrhenian water, thronged by a colourful plethora of marine life.

A trip to Calabria isn’t complete without tasting nduja, a soft sausage that’s packed with chilli. It can be spread on bread, or mixed into different types of homemade pasta dishes, such as strangugghj, fileja, and maccaruni.

Sardinia WEDDING TRADITION Italian brides and grooms often opt for simple white or yellow gold wedding bands as a precious sign of their commitment to one another. Their circular shape represents that their love has no beginning or end. Fittingly, the bands are called ‘fede‘, which means faith. Traditionally, it is also advised that the bride does not wear any other gold jewellery on her wedding day, not only to give the full attention to her ring, but also for a dose of good luck.

T

urqoise waters lap against powder white beaches on this sensational second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Sardinia enjoys 300 days of sunshine and its excellent winds make this destination ideal for sailing trips and luxury yacht charters. Unsurprisingly, high-flying celebrities have been making their way to Sardinia, and so the prices of mooring fees and eating out now cost more than average in peak season, like the Amalfi Coast. Bear this in mind when planning the timing of your trip to this jewel of unquestionable beauty.

The Emerald Coast

On the northeastern tip of Sardinia’s glittering coastline you’ll find the Costa Smeralda. It is home to the island’s finest resorts and exclusive marinas. The quaint port town of La Maddalena is the dominant outpost in La Maddalena Archipelago National Park, along with Caprera, Santo Stefano, Spargi, Budelli, Santa Maria and Razzoli making up ‘the seven sisters’. All islands are of interest for their beautiful shallow lagoons, pristine sandy beaches and scuba-diving potential. To top it off, pop across to the French island of Corsica to visit Bonifacio, an impressive harbour town precariously perched on high cliffs directly overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

Don’t Miss

The island’s capital of Cagliari has a distinctive Spanish feel in its old quarters and its Archaological Museum makes a worthwhile day activity. The road between Cagliari and Muravera is also one of the island’s most scenic drives, that winds across the deep-cut Sarrabus Mountain ravines and onwards to the coast. From here, you can continue north past the dense oak and chestnut forests of the Gennargentu mountains, and on to the incredible prehistoric Nuragic villages of Serra Orrios.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT... The natural ingredients grown in the glorious Sardinian sun speak for themselves in any of the region’s traditional dishes. Wheat is a staple in the Sardinian diet, and is used to make pane carasau, a thin crisp flatbread, as well as malloreddus shell pasta.

DID YOU KNOW? The romantic pink flush of Spiaggia Rosa beach makes it one of the most recognisable and loved beaches in the Meditteranean. Located on Budelli Island, it is an enchanting place to visit on your Sardianian itinerary. The corraline nature of the seabed colours the sand, which can vary in intensity over time.

Sardinian pecorino is certainly the most renowned in the region. The cheese has a long history, dating back to ancient times when Sardinian shepherds used to make it from the whey of local sheep milk. It has gained international recognition over the ages, and would make a fantastic addition to a wedding day cheese platter.

LET’S GET MARRIED IN ITALY

Sicily WEDDING TRADITION After the first romantic couples’ dance, the guests begin to join the bride and groom with a lively folk performance known as the ‘Tarantella’. Their friends and family hold hands and rotate around the couple in a fast upbeat tempo in both directions, accompanied by tambourines. The dance originates from the symptoms of getting bit by a poisonous spider, and it is popularly practised in the regions of Apulia, Campagna, Calabria and Sicily.

S

icily is the largest of the Italian islands, and it feels like a country of its own, with its unique tapestry of architecture, cultural traditions and jawdropping scenery. Separateed from Italy’s mainland by the Strait of Messina, its fierce backdrop of erupting volcanoes make it an extraordinary place to marry or honeymoon.

The Aeolian Islands

Located 25 miles off the north east of Sicily, the UNESCO World Heritage listed Aeolian Islands are part of a 200km long chain of seven volcanic islands that Lonely Planet has termed as the ‘European Holy Grail for island lovers’. Together they form part of the Messina province and include some eyecatching tectonic activity that can be seen from a distance. For example, they include Stromboli, an active volcanic island that regularly spurts liquid magma into the air; and Vulcano, known for its thermal hotsprings, bubbling mud baths and black sand beaches. The largest of the islands is Lipari. Its bustling main parade of modern shops and restaurants are mixed with fascinating windows into the past, such as the handsome 16th Century castle, Greek acropolis and Norman cathedral.

Don’t Miss

On Sicily’s eastern coast, Mount Etna is the tallest active volcano in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Thrillseeking hikers can ascend up the volcano and see its myriad of environments, from the sweet citrus groves, to the barren lunar landscapes as you reach closer to the crater. Etna’s natural parks are also home to some noteworthy natural features, including the ‘Pertusa di Notaro,’ a grotto noted for the extremely fresh air that passes through it. Another must-see is the dreamlike Acireale Carnival, which is celebrated for its creative papier-mâché and flowered floats that parade through the streets along with colourful animated masks.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT... Sicilian cuisine shows elements of all of the cultures that have existed on the island over the last two millennia, and undoubtedly this forms a varied and exciting diet. It is of course primarily Italian in nature, but Sicilian food also has Greek, Spanish, French and Arab influences.

DID YOU KNOW? The unusual Triscele symbol of Sicily comprises a face with three legs. The central face is said to represent a mythological gorgon monster recalling the Greek influence on the island, and the three legs presents the three geographical corners of Sicily.

Above all, Sicilians are passionate about good food using locally sourced ingredients, to form genuine wholesome flavours in their meals. This intention has been noted worldwide, and much of Sicily’s natural produce is now protected by DOP and IGT quality marks, such as its Pachino tomatoes and Pantelleria capers, prickly pears and the olives of Nocellara del Belice. uscany was our first choice for our destination wedding, we had always thought of having our dream wedding in Tuscany. When it came to choosing a location, we had seen many venues, but finally settled on Villa Daniela Grossi. We both instantly fell in love with it. It had all the space and greenery we were looking for. Plus it had an in-house catering service and it was perfect for our wedding reception. It was a perfect match for us. Organising our guests was very simple. Some stayed at Villa Daniela Grossi and the rest stayed at Villa Volpe. Everything was taken care of by the villa. There weren’t many challenges, and we even remained within our budget. We thought the distance would be a problem, but then realized that it as quite easy to communicate with Daniela and her team via email and Skype. When it comes to planning a wedding, my biggest piece of advice would be to look for a venue with a complete service included. It will help a lot. It was a life saver or us to only have to communicate with one person instead of all the vendors.

possibilities are endless. You can get married on the Dolomites and on the lakeside, on the ski slopes or in the wine cellars.

Why should a couple choose to have their wedding in Italy?

How do you ensure that the process is smooth and enjoyable?

Italy is a beautiful sunny land with great food and excellent wine and the people are very friendly too! We Italians are known to be very creative and are able to make a wedding away from home feel special and look unique.

Because we desire each wedding to be perfect, we keep in constant communication with the couple and ensure that we maintain excellent organization. We essentially become partners with the couples, taking on all their cares and concerns to ensure that we realise their every dream.

Where should brides look for inspiration?

Brides today get their inspiration from the internet. However, for a destination wedding, I would advise them to take inspiration from the local operators who know the area well and have formed relations with other operators in the region. We have several potential backdrops like mountains and vineyards, so many ideas can be brought to life.

What’s your favourite part of being a wedding planner? We would love to hear about a beautiful wedding you have planned recently.

I recently organized a gorgeous wedding in the cellar of a Baron in Palazzo a Prato, an enchanting place where the delicious wine, Pinot Nero is produced. For the reception dinner, the couple moved the celebrations to the snow-capped, Madonna di Campiglio, a famous ski resort. In our region the

PLANNING

Patricia Falzon We were delighted to meet Malta’s top wedding planner and founder of Perfect Weddings Malta

S

tepping into the wedding industry by chance, Patricia Falzon began her career working in conference and banqueting at a successful hotel chain. Taking to the job like a duck to water, Falzon increased sales to the hotel tremendously, mostly selling local weddings. She soon decided to pursue the field that she had garnered great victory in “I started focussing on bringing over destination weddings to Malta and managed to do this very successfully” she said. “I really enjoyed the idea of destination weddings since they were much more fun than the local weddings and way more rewarding than conferences and events. So I decided to branch out on my own and focus mainly on destination weddings, which is where I am now.” Hailing from Malta, Patricia shared nothing but praise for the European gem, “Well what can I say? 300 days of sunshine a year, we are steeped in history and our wedding venues are gorgeous!” Marriage in Malta is also legally binding worldwide, making it the ideal place for a wedding and events company to blossom.

Authentic Celebrations

From here came the birth of Perfect Weddings Malta. Spearheaded by Falzon, the wedding and events company work tirelessly and with sophisticated and detailed personnel to create beautifully authentic celebrations. Falzon and her team seek to make couples feel supported and inspired throughout the planning process, so that they can enjoy every moment. “We guide them throughout the planning process, prompting and advising until they are happy

with the picture we have painted together” said Falzon. “We get involved as much or as little as the couple wish us to. However, I have found that most couples prefer our guidance and expertise since it is their first time planning a wedding.”

The Perfect Host

Aiming to take as much pressure away from the couple as possible, Falzon and her team keep in regular contact which each couple they work with. They take care of all the little logistical details that in other instances can be a nuisance. “If at any time they feel concerned then we talk over the phone or Skype so that we can reassure them. It is quite normal for brides to feel stressed. It is up to us to make sure that whatever is stressing them goes away.” Falzon’s passion for her craft makes it so even the most tedious of tasks fill her with joy. Searching for venues or “venue finding missions” as Falzon likes to call them have fast become her favourite part of the job, although daunting for some it is a much anticipated challenge for Patricia. She takes pride in bringing to life the dreams and visions of each couple. Being told that she has exceeded their expectations and seeing the joy on their faces is a feeling like no other. With several years of experience under her belt, Patricia Falzon, advises those seeking to pursue this profession, that commitment is an essential skill. “You need commitment and passion; you need to be patient and calm. You need to be meticulous and you need to be strong” she says. The key to the success of Patricia and Perfect Weddings is their commitment to each and every couple. WWW.DWHA.CO.UK

Fiander Foto A chat with Melanie Fiander, the face behind the lens of Fiander Foto

How long have you been a photographer and how did you get into the wedding industry?

I’ve been working as a photographer for well over 15 years during which time I have held various positions in the field; from working not only as a wedding photographer but also as a photojournalist and documentary photographer. I first entered the wedding industry while I was a MFA student at Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine in 2005. During this time in my life, a number of friends and family members asked me to photograph their weddings. Directly after graduate school, I began teaching photography at the collegiate level while simultaneously continuing to shoot weddings for my own business, Fiander Foto. After each wedding I photographed, I found myself becoming drawn more and more to the industry. I’m thankful for my eclectic background in photography and academia because I think it’s helped to shape my work today.

How would you describe your style and approach? What do you enjoy most about being a wedding photographer?

A big part of my approach to capturing weddings is based both on documentary and portrait photography. When shooting a wedding, I’m really acting as several different types of photographers to cover all aspects of the couple’s day. For example, a portion of the wedding day is dedicated to capturing detailed shots; images of the dress, shoes, rings, invitations, gifts from the couple, and the ceremony and reception décor, which is where product photography comes into play. It’s also important to “set the scene” as a wedding photographer; to capture images that display the overall landscape of the wedding location. This is particularly true for destination weddings where the couple has chosen the venue because they like how the location looks and it holds a special place in their hearts. Of course,

“There’s also a

big responsibility that comes with being a wedding photographer; this day occurs once and as the photographger, you have one attempt to get the shot; there are no re-dos.

PLANNING

a large portion of a wedding day is dedicated to capturing candid photographs and traditional portraits; for example, during the ceremony, the cocktail hour, group photos, and the reception. This is where my approach shifts towards documentary and traditional portraiture. My overall style however is simplistic. I work under natural light often, although I also use an on or off-camera flash to produce a certain lighting affect when needed. When exposing the images and editing them in post, I would describe my use of colour as “true”; currently falling in between the “light and airy” and the “dark and moody” styles. Being able to “hone in” on several different genres of photography helps to keep things interesting and this is one of the aspects that I love about being a wedding photographer. I also enjoy capturing the intimate moments that unfold during a wedding; not just between the couple but also among their guests. There’s also a big responsibility that comes with being a wedding photographer; this day occurs once and as the photographer, you have one attempt to get the shot; there are no re-dos.

How do you prepare yourself the day before the wedding?

The day before a wedding, I charge my batteries, clean my camera bodies and lenses, and pack all my gear. I set aside what I’m going to wear on the wedding day, which typically consists of a black or very dark outfit (to avoid reflecting any colour back into the lenses while shooting) with a comfortable pair of shoes. Wedding days have a tendency to move very quickly and staying calm and collected is a big part of being a wedding photographer. It’s important to be prepared both physically and mentally. To help prepare for this aspect, I really enjoy doing yoga and going to bed early the night before.

What inspires you?

I draw my inspiration from many sources. Visually speaking, the biggest source comes from studying the work of historic and contemporary photographers. I also pull a lot of my inspiration from films or television series; mainly historic time-period dramas. As a wedding photographer, there’s always something new to learn. For me, I find that the best learning experiences occur from speaking to other wedding photographers: in everyday conversations, in groups on social media, through mentorships, classes, or workshops.

What tips would you give an aspiring photographer looking to break into the wedding industry?

Breaking into the wedding business can certainly seem ominous for an aspiring photographer. To build a portfolio, I would highly recommend attending workshops and to also plan one’s own stylized bridal photo shoots. When working as a wedding photographer, my biggest suggestion would be to develop a timeline for the day’s events. Map out exactly when and for how long you’ll need to capture the getting ready images, how long the ceremony will be, how long group photos will take, etc. The day’s events can move very quickly, although a timeline makes it a little easier to help ensure everything is photographed.

What’s the best moment you’ve had as a wedding photographer?

The first wedding I shot in Northern Italy was certainly a highlight for me as a photographer. The couple were wed at San Nicolò in Padua and the reception was at Ca ‘Marcello - Villa Veneta in Levada. Both of these locations were stunning but what really made this wedding so successful in terms of the photography was the couples’ ability to be themselves in front of my lens. I attribute this to a few things but mainly, from the couple trusting me as their photographer; they were familiar with my work, had discussed my style and approach, and we developed a timeline together so they were aware of what images I’d be aiming to capture. They understood I was there to capture an array of images that would tell their whole story of; to deliver a carefully curated collection of images reflective of the love they share. WWW.DWHA.CO.UK
