What makes up the musculoskeletal system?

206 bones

connected through

360 joints

Nerves from your joints, muscles and tissues communicate to the brain via sensory and motor information.

650 muscles

which produce movement at your joints. Bones, muscles and joints are linked together via connective tissues. These include your ligaments, tendons, cartilage, lymphatic tissues, joint capsules, fascia, blood and 80% of nerves.

The musculoskeletal system, through the coordination of these components, allows you to move through space and interact with your environment. 3

Defining musculoskeletal health Health of the MSK system can be defined as the absence of dysfunction, disease or injury within all of the parts.

The parts include the bones, joints, muscles and connective tissues which help to maintain the structure and movement of your body.

Intricately connected, the function or dysfunction of the MSK system and neurological system will impact each other.

Furthermore, a healthy musculoskeletal system possesses optimal capacity within its joints and tissues to sustain the loads, forces and stresses placed upon it.

Improving the quality of the MSK system is crucial not only for health of the other systems in the body but also for overall happiness and quality of life. 4

GOOD MSK HEALTH

POOR MSK HEALTH

• Absence of chronic pain, discomfort or stiffness in your muscles or joints

• Chronic pain, discomfort or stiffness in your muscles or joints

• Not feeling physically limited in your movements or daily activities

• Recurrent injuries and delayed healing of injuries

• Recovering well from challenging exercise efforts

• Difficulty reaching fitness goals or declining performance

• Feeling strong and stable when active or during daily activities

• Decreased enjoyment during physical activity (vacations, playing with your kids)

• Improving performance and ability to reach fitness goals

• Decreased quality of life and desire to pursue hobbies

5

Defining Injury • Injury of the musculoskeletal system can occur to its parts (bones, joints, muscles, tissues, etc) or within the function (i.e. how you move, efficiency of movement, etc) • You can sprain, strain, tear, break, fracture or bruise muscles, bones and connective tissue. • You can also experience problems in the function of joints and tissues which can lead to further deterioration, pain and dysfunction within those affected parts.

Physically doing too much - Overtraining - Lack of recovery days

No treatment or rehab plan Thinking that rest-only is the answer

Failure to adequately warm-up prior to exercise

Only implementing temporary fixes - Braces, splints, tape - Medication, injections

Improper or unnecessary usage of medications

Noncompliance with treatment plans

Seeing the wrong provider for your issue

Not having a well-designed and balanced fitness plan
